The Extracurriculum Of Creative Writing, Nancy Reddy
The Extracurriculum Of Creative Writing, Nancy Reddy
Journal of Creative Writing Studies
So far, the scholarship in the emerging field of Creative Writing Studies has focused primarily on creative writing workshops in colleges and universities. This article argues that Creative Writing Studies should broaden its focus to also include what scholars call the extracurriculum –the writing that people do when it’s not required by school or work, which takes place across a range of community, nonprofit, private, and digital spaces. Qualitative and archival research in the extracurriculum can help us develop a longer and more complex history and a more inclusive pedagogy.
Utilizing Digital Literacy In The Creative Writing Classroom, Sam Meekings
Utilizing Digital Literacy In The Creative Writing Classroom, Sam Meekings
Journal of Creative Writing Studies
This paper will examine contemporary approaches to utilizing the pre-existing skills and knowledge of students in order to reconceptualize the process and reception of writing. Using social media platforms in the Creative Writing classroom presents a range of possibilities for experimenting with character, voice, structure, tone and world-building. This paper will share examples and exercises from a range of resources, and discuss ways of using the technical, formal, and cross-platform innovations of online applications to extend lessons beyond the classroom. Consideration will also be given to the problems inherent in using social media platforms for storytelling.

BYCATCH is a collection of poems that explore the speaker’s relationship with the natural world. The poems utilize a variety of forms, from traditional sestinas and sonnets driven by image, to puzzle-pieced stereoscopes that can be read grammatically in three different ways—left to right, or down one of either columns. Though the collection is rooted in nature, the emotional drive is rooted in the construction and deconstruction of the family and the body. Each section of the book will function as …

Anxiety: Environmental And Otherwise, Aprille Noelle Mohn
English: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
“Anxiety: Environmental and Otherwise” is a collection of works from different genres and of different lengths. The pieces vary in tone from professional to confessional. Nonfiction sits next to fiction and experimental forms. The common thread that binds the pieces together is one of personal values. The heart of the collection is the importance of discovering one’s self and then making the choice to nurture that identity. With all of life’s strangeness and the impossible abundance of experiences, it can be difficult to truly see one’s self. It’s even more difficult to see why any of us are the way …

Hot Fruit, Erinrose Mager
Hot Fruit, Erinrose Mager
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The creative component of this dissertation is a collection of short prose that investigates the longing for the self, the longing for another, and the longing for connection between the self and another during periods of mourning and transition. Hot Fruit, though vocally, stylistically, and perspectivally fragmented, finds its unification through attention to the minute, the quotidian, and the domestic. It likewise attends to small actions performed as acts of care, empathy, and discovery, foregrounding the minor exchange or the minor memory as a means of understanding. Transracial adoptee and Asian American identities; food, ritual, and home; potentiality and …

A Father At 1.5 Metres: Poems Of Pandemic And Fatherhood, Edward J. Leeming
Theses : Honours
'A Father at 1.5 Metres: Poems of Pandemic and Fatherhood' is a 36 poem collection with a connecting theme of uncertainty informed by John Keats‟ concept of negative capability. Negative capability, a term introduced by Keats in 1817, suggests that a writer is benefitted by a refusal of the formation of concrete ideas, that being in uncertainty without needlessly chasing after truth allows for a better understanding of the world, and of more perspectives in their writing. The negatively capable writer is more open to possibilities and of exploring new ideas; this allows them to pursue what Keats calls “beauty”, …

Rainbow Writes: Peer-Led Creative Writing Groups’ Potential For Promoting 2slgbtq+ Youth Wellbeing, Ceilidh Harrison
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Though mainstream acceptance for the 2SLGBTQ+ community is on the rise, elevated risks of mental health challenges still pervade this community, particularly for youth growing up in this changing environment. Based on previous literature citing the benefits of creative interventions and youth autonomy, the current study sought to explore the implementation of an online, peer-led creative writing program as a possible means to increase emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing in 2SLGBTQ+ youth. Twenty self-identifying 2SLGBTQ+ youth from across Canada were recruited to form two 10-week, online peer-led creative writing groups titled “Rainbow Writes”. Based on Lerner et al.’s (2003) “Five …
