The Perpetual Harvest, Joseph Cifelli Apr 2023

The Perpetual Harvest, Joseph Cifelli

Senior Theses and Projects

My intention for this project was to create a fantasy setting that, in presenting pieces of itself, from oblique angles, opens up the world to stories and myths beyond those I’ve provided. The foundation is the introductory guide, which details the primary social, economic, and supernatural mechanisms of the setting. The following stories are meant to play off the guide, exploring tones, voices, and plots implied or ignored by its limited perspective. I was heavily inspired by Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher short story collections, which blend the magic and mundane aspects of fantasy beautifully.

A Cycle Of Farewells, Kailey E. Carpenter

Senior Theses and Projects

A two-act play that explores the influence of society on the individual. In a town where suicide is not frowned upon, by highly encouraged and honored, characters must find their place amongst the crowd, grappling with the ideas of agency, choice, and individualization.

Inspired by works such as Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery,” and Peter Weir’s 1998 satirical dramedy The Truman Show, the play idealizes a society that not only encourages their citizens to monitor one another, but also internalizes the idea that someone is always watching. There is a particular sense of loneliness that comes from being in amongst a …

Following The Androscoggin, Molly I. Parent

Following the Androscoggin is a historical fiction novella that takes place during one summer in the 1950s. It follows a fifteen-year-old named Tommy and his parents after they’ve moved from Massachusetts to the mill town of Lewiston, Maine. It is told in retrospect by a much-older Tommy, who reflects on the oppressive elements that were at play in the structure of his family, particularly during the summer when they all tried to find their way in a new town. Through Tommy’s recounting of his story, we also learn about the ethnic tensions of ‘50s Lewiston concerning the Franco-American population, and …

Edna St. Vincent Millay: Artisan Of Violent Feminine Agency, Carolina Galdiz Apr 2014

Edna St. Vincent Millay: Artisan Of Violent Feminine Agency, Carolina Galdiz

Senior Theses and Projects

For decades, scholars have understood Edna St Vincent Millay in two fairly distinctive patterns as either a classical romanticist or ephemeral rebel. This dual reputation has been crafted from the obvious presence of natural imagery, sexual dynamism, feminine voice, and romantic yearning in her work. What critics have failed to see in her poetry are the potent sinister undertones that claim violence as a means to power. I will argue that Millay narrates the gendered struggle that takes place in this violence, in order to ultimately assert feminine agency in the process of forming a cultural identity. Thus, rather than …
