Image, Epigram, And Nature In Middle Byzantine Personal Devotion, Brad Hostetler Apr 2017

Image, Epigram, And Nature In Middle Byzantine Personal Devotion, Brad Hostetler

Brad Hostetler

In Nectar and Illusion, Henry Maguire examines Byzantium's ambiguous relationship with nature in both art and literature. He demonstrates that after Iconoclasm, visual representations of the terrestrial world displayed in public settings were in "a constant tension between acceptance and denial," but "tended to flourish most abundantly in relatively inconspicuous locations," such as on small private objects. I build upon Maguire's work by examining the ways in which nature was invoked, represented, and utilized through epigrams, images, and materials in personal devotional contexts in the Middle Byzantine period.

Time And Again: Early Medieval Chronography And The Recurring Holy First-Created Day Of George Synkellos, Jesse W. Torgerson

Jesse W Torgerson

A literary and philosophical analysis of George Synkellos' (d. 810) historical vision in his 'Chronography'. The article argues that, despite the apparent disciplinary paradox, George Synkellos' vision of history coherently drew together an Aristotelian conception of time with his own exegesis of the scriptures, and a contemporary theology of the encounter with the divine in liturgical worship.

"From The Many, One? The Shared Manuscripts Of The Chronicle Of Theophanes And The Chronography Of Synkellos," Studies In Theophanes (Travaux Et Mémoires 19) Paris, 2015: Pp. 93-117, Jesse Torgerson

Jesse W Torgerson

A survey of the surviving medieval manuscripts of two monumental (in their own time) and extremely important (for scholars today) historical works produced in Constantinople and its environs between 808-815: the Chronography of George Synkellos and the Chronicle of Theophanes the Confessor.
The article argues that, based on the surviving evidence, the two works were not read separately but as a single Account of the World ("Universal History" or "Chronography"). That is, in every surviving manuscript there is evidence that the works originally circulated in the same manuscript codices (books) where they were joined back-to-back. What this means for how …

Myth Materialized: Thirteenth Century Additions To The West Façade Of San Marco And Their Value In Venetian History Making, Michelle Reynolds Nov 2012

Myth Materialized: Thirteenth Century Additions To The West Façade Of San Marco And Their Value In Venetian History Making, Michelle Reynolds

Michelle Reynolds

The focus of this paper is on the basilica of San Marco in Venice and its relationship to the political and social culture in which it was erected. Looking directly at the set of four horses placed high above the five main entrances and the mosaics of the transfer of Saint Mark’s relics to Venice which originally decorated these portals in the thirteenth century, this paper looks to discover connections between these rather unique designs and stylistic choices and the unique sense of identity the Venetians had long perpetuated. The two different groups of works illuminate deliberate stylistic connections to …

But a crack team of archaeologists and forensic scientists have uncovered hard evidence for the existence of the legend – a legend that continues to haunt communities in the present day…"

Participation in this documentary directed by Gianni Minelli and produced by Zeeva Production in English and in Italian.

"On September 26th, 1997, a violent earthquake shook central Italy. The effects were devastating. Television stations from all over the world broadcasted images of the incomparable artistic heritage that risked being destroyed forever. In Monsanpolo del Tronto, a small town in the Marches, the earthquake damaged the beautiful church Maria Santissima Assunta. A few years later, during the restoration of the church, a sensational discovery was made: twenty perfectly preserved mummies from the middle of the sixteenth century wearing their original clothes. …

Exile And The Poetics Of Loss In Greek Tradition, Nancy Sultan Dec 1998

Exile And The Poetics Of Loss In Greek Tradition, Nancy Sultan

Nancy Sultan

In Exile and the Poetics of Loss in Greek Tradition, Nancy Sultan examines the theme of heroic exile and return in Greek poetic tradition from the Archaic epic of Homer to modern Greek folk poetry and song. Sultan studies issues of how husbands and wives survive separation and communicate the painful experience of loss. Focusing on the role women play as obstacles and facilitators during the hero's exile and return, Sultan argues that the hero's reputation, his glory, that which he earns through suffering in exile, is managed by women―especially his wife and mother. Without their emotional support, the hero's …
