Mo Yan's Polarizations: An Interpretation Of HisBig Breasts And Wide Hips, Yong Zhao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Before writing Big Breasts and Wide Hips, Mo Yan has already formed a fixed mode of polarized thinking and perception, and the mode is reflected in his choice of subject matter. One the hand, he dredges from memorized history and writes with a confirmative force; on the other hand, he criticizes the realistic history and writes with a negative attitude. Big Breasts and Wide Hips displays as the reasonable extension of both polarities and shows that it is both a grace deconstruction of the memorized history and a parody of the realistic history. The characters are designed to fall into …

On Liu Gangji's Practical Ontological Aesthetics As An Advance Of Practical Aesthetics, Liyuan Zhu, Wenying Zhang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

In 1980s, Liu Gangji put forward and established practical ontological aesthetics as a result of reflection and critique of mechanistic and perceptual materialism. He re-interpreted the Marxist view of practice as that which is participated by both the subject and the object, and elevated practice from epistemological level to ontological level. In this way, his conceptualization surpassed the dichotomy between subject and object and transcended the material ontology in the track of old materialism which to this day is still followed by some scholars. Liu Gang Ji's concept of practice not only initiated an advance in Marxist aesthetics of practicum …

A Critical Reflection On And Construction Of Modern Chinese Literary Theory, Yichuan Wang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

This essay attempts to survey and critically reflect the development of modern Chinese literary theory. It summarizes the heritage of modern Chinese literary theory in the form of domestic stand that incorporates Western thoughts, modern position that revitalizes Chinese tradition, union between individuals and the mass, the priority of material over mind in the symbiosis of thought and art, and the necessary tension between interior intellectual system and exterior ideological institutions. The history of modern Chinese literary theory also leaves us some lessons to learn, especially such fixations as inclination to dialectic thinking, thinking taking priority over being, over-appropriating, xenophobic …

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The awakening of self-consciousness and subjectivity resulted from the enlightenment demonstrates in the May 4th Movement as a radical criticism on tradition, and this criticism itself becomes a means to modernity. The enlightenment also resulted in the loss of Chinese cultural subjecthood, the consequence of which was felt strong in the post-colonial Taiwan and Hong Kong first. The Ethical Landscape In The Transformation Of Modernity In Shen Congwen'sBorder Town And After, Yan Chen

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Shen Congwen's writing of Xiangxi (the Western Hunan area) shifts its focus from legendary stories to history-directed experiences. The activities of his characters are put into the mosaic of historical experiences, so as to present the modern transformation of the ancient community life in the Western Hunan area. They had also adopted a commensurate strategy and mode of knowledge production, and had faced the same …

Towards A Thick Description Of Maoist Discourse: With Help From Zhao Shuli, Vukovich Daniel Nov 2012

Towards A Thick Description Of Maoist Discourse: With Help From Zhao Shuli, Vukovich Daniel

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

With a few exceptions much of the knowledge of modern China produced in the world either ignores or demonizes the Mao era. On the cultural front things are not much better, whether we are speaking of the "Seventeen-year's Literature" or the culture of the 1960s and 1970s. The negation of the Mao or radical era is, in short, a crucial part of contemporary Sinological-orientalism. There is however a recovery and reorientation project underway that seeks to restore the complexity of the Mao decades and its pursuit of an alternative, agrarian, and socialist modernity. As part of this project I offer …

Cultural Signification And Literary Signification: With A Tentative Solution To Hillis Miller's Paradox Of Literary Identification Mode, Yang Liu Sep 2012

Cultural Signification And Literary Signification: With A Tentative Solution To Hillis Miller's Paradox Of Literary Identification Mode, Yang Liu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Signification theory constitutes a theoretical foundation of cultural studies as it is built on in-depth explorations of Saussure's language theory. Signification implies the requirement of decoding. Cultural signification is realized when the signified in first level symbolic system is hollowed out and filled in by the second level symbolic system, and it then exhibits as a mythological path to bourgeois ideology. Signification informs the implications of literary works and makes them intelligible from the perspective of semiotics. Along this line of delineation, we may find a possible solution to Hillis Miller’s paradox of literary identification mode between innocent reading and …

Literariness, Anti-Essentialism And Spatial Turn, Wei Wang Sep 2012

Literariness, Anti-Essentialism And Spatial Turn, Wei Wang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Different ways may be applied to the investigation of literariness as a measure in judging literature. The dominant way to understand literariness has been within an essentialist mode, which approaches literature from the perspective of imagery and aesthetic ideology, which has been under attack from the anti-essentialistic approach. Anti-essentialistic approach develops from the monistic to the pluralistic and ultimately to the nonessentialistic. The paper maintains that the investigation of literariness should rid itself of the myth of trans-tempo-spatiality and entrust itself to the interplay between the interrelated factors in the synchronic spatial structure in literature.

The Modernized Representation Of Chinese Classical Literature In Taiwan Modern Poetry, Sheng Wu

The Linguistic Refashioning Of An Internal Exile: Duoduo And His Pre-Exile Poetics, Chee Lay Tan May 2012

The Linguistic Refashioning Of An Internal Exile: Duoduo And His Pre-Exile Poetics, Chee Lay Tan

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

This paper investigates Chinese Misty poet Duoduo's early pre-exile poems. As Duoduo uses punctuation abundantly in an orderly structure and dates his poems, his works projects themselves as being more transparent than obscure or misty. Even Duoduo himself denied writing Misty poetry, although most critics classified his works as "Misty" and described them as "weird" and "difficult". This paper will examine such confusion by focusing on Duoduo's pre-exile linguistic refashioning via musicality and juxtaposition of unrelated images, which I regard as his main constituent of Mistiness.

The Predicament Of Literary Theory Teaching In The Era Of Pictorial Reading And Its Solutions, Xiaoping Liang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The predicament of literary theory teaching in the era of pictorial reading results from many respects. Literature environment in the electronic media has far exceeded the explanation scope of existing literary theory, and a gap also exists between literary theory and recent literature practice among contemporary audience. The general decline of reading and understanding classic texts among readers born after the 1990s leads to the failure of communication in the teaching of literary theory. At the same time, more work still needs to be done in the recontextualization of both Western theories and Chinese classical literary theories into contemporary Chinese …

Upon "Aesthetic Education As Substitute For Religion" And The Secularity Of Cai Yuanpei's Construction Of Aesthetic Belief, Liyong Pan

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Via his theory of "Aesthetic Education as Substitute for Religion," Cai Yuanpei intended to reconstruct the national belief through aesthetic education in a cultural context where the religious spirit was non-existent and the Confucian rites-music institutions had long collapsed. The uniqueness of aesthetics as mental activities and the socio-political context of modern China determine the tension between the secularity and the transcendence in the aesthetic construction of belief, which often results in the sacrifice of the transcendental spirit. This is closely linked with the state of mind of the intellectuals entangled between China and the west, the traditional and the …

On Zhu Dongrun's Theory Of Biographical Literature And Its Characteristic Complexity, Yeping Gu Mar 2012

On Zhu Dongrun's Theory Of Biographical Literature And Its Characteristic Complexity, Yeping Gu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Zhu Dongrun's theory of biographical literature is constructed from the existent practices and theories of both ancient China and the West. The central concepts of Zhu's theory include the renaming of the prevailing biographical literature into biographical narrative literature, the emphasis of the dual attributes of historical and literary of biographical literature while defining the connotation of biographical narrative. The claim of "the turn from events to people" has freed the biographical literature from its dependency on history, but the overemphasis of historical reliability may result in the negligence of literariness. The claim to characterize and reveal from life from …

When Wang Yuanhua was widely acclaimed as a distinguished literary theorist who excelled in both Chinese and Western theories before the 90s, scholars tended to neglect the fact that Zhdanovism which originated from the former Soviet Union had always been his guiding principle and methodology all through his academic career. When he first embarked on literary theory, Zhdanovism was his main theoretical anchor which can be evidenced by his works like Luxun and Nietzsche and On Realism which were produced in 1939 and 1940 respectively. He began to reflect upon Zhdanovism in 1943 for he found that Zhdanovism tend to impair …
