Boise, the capital of Idaho that we Basques feel so close to and our own despite being far from the Basque Country, is a twinned city with Gernika-Lumo, known to us as the "eighth Basque province". Today, 12-15,000 people of Basque origin live in the state of Idaho. Throughout the Spanish poetic production of the 20^th century, cities have developed a relevant role as a recurring space at the same time as society urbanized and an exodus took place from agricultural areas to the work centers offered by the cities. Inferential-Realizational Morphology And Affix Ordering: Evidence From The Agreement Patterns Of Basque Auxiliary Verbs, Parker Brody

“No aspect of Basque linguistics has received more attention over the years than the morphology of the verb.” (Trask 1981:1)

The current study examines the complex morphological agreement patterns found in the Basque auxiliary verb system as a case in point for discussion of theoretical approaches to inflectional morphology. The traditional syntax-driven treatment of these auxiliaries is contrasted with an inferential, morphology-driven analysis within the Paradigm Function Morphology framework. Additionally, a computational implementation of the current analysis using the DATR lexical knowledge representation language is discussed.

Devotees of Basque (Euskara) have been enjoying a steady increase in the number of user-friendly introductions to the complexities of this fascinating language. There already exist beginner courses accompanied by cassette tapes (e.g. Alan R. King and Begotxu Olaizola Elordi, Colloquial Basque, London: Routledge, 1996), something that not long ago was mainly a luxury of the more frequently studied languages. This book adds the first full-length English-language description of Euskara grammar written for pedagogical purposes.
