How can the divide between science and the humanities be bridged? This article describes a series of collaborative art projects initiated by the science librarian at the College of the Holy Cross, who worked with faculty from Visual Arts and Creative Writing. Participating faculty were eager to help design opportunities that would highlight student work as well as form alliances with the libraries. These collaborations were innovative in that they brought together two academic worlds which don’t always have opportunities to mix with each other, generated other projects that drew non-traditional users into the science library, and, most significantly, enabled …

This interview sits alongside an extended version edited for Amanda Curreri’s solo exhibition, The Calmest of Us Would be lunatics, which took place from January 21–May 8, 2016, at Rochester Art Center, in Rochester, Minnesota. Curreri dug through the archival collection of the Daughters of Bilitis, the first lesbian organization in the country, and their journal, The ladder, at the Tretter Collection in LGBT Studies at the University of Minnesota. This article describes new art installations and landscaping which enhance the exterior spaces of Dinand Library at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts.

The murals, "Civitas Branching" and "Lungs of the Planet," are collaborative art projects created by students of the College and members of the Worcester community. They were installed in April 2016. A dedication ceremony was held April 20, 2016.

Sonic Activation is a multimedia performance-installation featuring sound sculptures, video projections, and performance with live electronics for solo and mixed ensembles. The work aims to unpack the nature in which we hear and interact with sound, space, and gesture. It is a project that recontextualizes the typical practice of performance and installation modes of music and art. The event uses 12 loudspeakers spaced around a gallery to create a densely layered sonic atmosphere that gently fluctuates and slowly evolves. The aim of this project in its entirety was to explore different ideas about what the intersection of art and science might look like. These ideas, including my own, are presented in the following essay. In addition to the essay portion of this project, I’ve explored creative writing through poetry in attempts to immerse myself in both sides of this debate, as my academic history leans more towards the scientific realm. In the poems I’ve also tried to include bits of science through metaphorical language. The four works I have chosen to include follow the essay.

Aesthetic visualization projects that incorporate users, community stakeholders, multiple modalities and technologies necessarily emphasize the way that an artistic visualization can be both an artifact and a process — a conceptualization of aesthetic visualization that is useful for thinking about visualization in general. In this paper, the authors propose the concept of the visualization as boundary object, a move away from the indexical claims of visualization and instead towards an acknowledgement of the entangled nature of social, political, economic, cultural, technological and environmental actants. This essay examines the thought processes of how a short, informative booklet was constructed for the Shark Reef Aquarium. Methods of research includes searching for valuable, credible articles, viewing competitor’s designs, visiting the company’s official information and media, and gathering design books for inspiration. Other ways of research include the designer’s ability to think critically in order to create intentional design that effectively communicates the information to the reader. Ultimately, looking at Lied Library’s resources has played a role in the booklet design and how to think about the supporting design elements.

Four faculty researchers, two from Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar, and two from Weill Cornell Medicine in Qatar developed a one semester workshop-based course in Qatar exploring the connections between art and medicine in a contemporary context. Students (6 art / 6 medicine) were enrolled in the course. The course included presentations by clinicians, medical engineers, artists, computing engineers, an art historian, a graphic designer, a painter, and other experts from the fields of art, design, and medicine. To measure the student experience of interdisciplinarity, the faculty researchers employed a mixed methods approach involving psychometric tests and observational ethnography. Data …
