From Gaza City To The Golden Gate A Call To The International Theatre Community To Join The Struggle For Cultural Justice, Jessica Litwak Feb 2019

From Gaza City To The Golden Gate A Call To The International Theatre Community To Join The Struggle For Cultural Justice, Jessica Litwak

Student Articles, Chapters, Presentations, Learning Objects

On 9 August 2018, Gaza theatremaker Hossam Madhoun was chatting with friends a little more than fifty yards from the city’s Al Mishal Cultural Centre. One friend, who had just returned to the area, asked where his theatre and performance could be produced in town. The beautiful and well-equipped Red Crescent Society, perhaps? Madhoun had to remind him it had been bombed by the Israeli Army during the military offensive on Gaza in 2008. The friend then asked about the theatre at Holst Cultural Center.

“When was the last time you visited Gaza?” Madhoun asked. “Hamas turned the Holst into …

How To Be The Perfect Asian Wife!, Sophia Hill Apr 2018

How To Be The Perfect Asian Wife!, Sophia Hill

Art and Art History Honors Projects

“How to be the Perfect Asian Wife” critiques exploitative power systems that assault female bodies of color in intersectional ways. This work explores strategies of healing and resistance through inserting one’s own narrative of flourishing rather than surviving, while reflecting violent realities. Three large drawings mimic pervasive advertisement language and presentation reflecting the oppressive strategies used to contain women of color. Created with charcoal, watercolor, and ink, these 'advertisements' contrast with an interactive rice bag filled with comics of my everyday experiences. These documentations compel viewers to reflect on their own participation in systems of power.

Promoting Interdisciplinarity: Its Purpose And Practice In Arts Programming, Shannon Farrow Mcneely, Denise Gillman, Danielle Hartman Jan 2018

Promoting Interdisciplinarity: Its Purpose And Practice In Arts Programming, Shannon Farrow Mcneely, Denise Gillman, Danielle Hartman

English, Linguistics, and Communication (Legacy)

Each discipline provides education and society with a unique perspective of the world, yet independently, disciplines can only go so far when attempting to address our greatest challenges. To go beyond the limits of the discipline, one must employ interdisciplinary approaches, which include being driven by complex questions, seeking collaboration from multiple disciplines, and integrating their understandings by finding common ground. The arts create an amazing opportunity for interdisciplinary exploration and development with other disciplines which benefits arts leaders and educators, students and departments in higher education, and the local community. This article seeks to explore interdisciplinarity and its benefits …

Telling Fire’S Story Through Narrative And Art, Stephen W. Barrett Jul 2017

Telling Fire’S Story Through Narrative And Art, Stephen W. Barrett

Joint Fire Science Program Digests

Modern works by highly skilled narrative authors and artists have become increasingly useful for telling the story of wildland fire in the United States. Using unconventional means—and with partial funding by the Joint Fire Science Program—creative individuals have spawned some colorful and heartfelt messages that convey insightful information about wildland fire, climate, and other elements of nature to an increasingly receptive public. Recent narrative works by well-known authors, such as Stephen J. Pyne, and creative art pieces by well-established and emerging artists have helped depict fire in a new light to audiences that scientists may rarely reach. This issue of …

The World Of The Cat's Table: Literature Through Production Design Analysis, Andrea J. Johnson May 2016

The World Of The Cat's Table: Literature Through Production Design Analysis, Andrea J. Johnson

Senior Honors Projects

The Cat’s Table by Michael Ondaatje is a rich piece of literature that has a diverse set of characters confined to one pivotal location, a ship. Just as the novel builds a world around its characters, in this project I attempted to build a space around immersive design choices.

Production Design is a visual response to analytic reading. By taking a written piece or concept and creating the physical/visual atmosphere for the work, a production designer’s job is to create the overall look and tone of a creative production, be it for a film, play, or museum space. This is …

Off the Lip Conference - Transdisciplinary Approaches to Cognitive Innovation

The promise of cognitive innovation as a collaborative project in the sciences, arts and humanities is that we can approach creativity as a bootstrapping cognitive process in which the energies that shape the poem are necessarily indistinguishable from those that shape the poet. For the purposes of this conference the exploration of the idea of cognitive innovation concerns an understanding of creativity that is not exclusively concerned with conscious human thought and action but also as intrinsic to our cognitive development. As a consequence, we see the possibility for cognitive innovation to provide a theoretical and practical platform from which …
