World War II (hereafter referred to as WWII) is a fascinating era in fashion, society, and politics. The fashion of the era was truly representative of the events happening in the world in a most visible way. This era made indelible marks on future designers and the science of fashion as the world knows it. Fashion and costume design were influenced and changed due to the many limitations presented and imposed by WWII. Coco Chanel : De La Rue À La Haute Couture – Adaptant La Nouvelle Femme, Shannon R. Funkhouser

Dissertations

The intent of this three-paper format dissertation is to examine three topics germane to the clothing requirements and clothing acquisition of women who are postmastectomy. Each paper’s focus resides within a broader theme of addressing a population that has specialized clothing needs. While each study is independent in nature, they build on each other. The first paper describes the demographics of the population and how those demographics and treatment path for breast cancer provide a different framework for reaction to the retail offerings currently on the market. The next paper focuses on the association between demographics and treatment path of …

Wind Chime, Arlene Handschuch

Arlene Handschuch

“Wind Chime” is a jacket and skirt ensemble for the professional woman that is suitable for day or evening wear. I was invited to create this ensemble as a guest designer for the Queen Sirikit Institute of Sericulture in Bangkok, Thailand. The purpose of the design was to showcase womenswear made from the highest quality Thai silk for an exhibition at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations conference to promote the new labeling standards and emblems recently developed by Thailand's Agriculture Ministry to authenticate Thai silk and protect it from imitations. The labeling emblems are affixed to the fabric and …
