This is a chronicle of a tableware enthusiast who set out to share her ideas by designing for the everyday eater. The quest began with questioning what an ideal meal experience is and why it revolves around a static, flat table. What are the aspects of present-day eating scenarios that could be improved upon? I considered the conventions of dining, studying traditional forms, materials and spaces related to this practice, and proposed new ways of eating. The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not a rectangular wine bottle with a square base would be environmentally beneficial due to its ability to fit more bottles into a single shipping container. An interview was conducted from the CEO of company that currently produces bottles in this fashion and she helped answer this hypothesis as well as provide insight into the bottle production process. In addition to the environmental aspect, the study looked to determine if a square-based bottle would be accepted by consumers in the marketplace. Design as a field of developing new products and interfaces has been following some technological innovations, such as the appearance of new software and tools that allow the product designer perform various tasks such as product analysis. Today there are new challenges to the design field, such as continuous learning and operation of computerized equipment. This book describes a two-year collaborative research project between the Helen Hamlyn Centre at the Royal College of Art and Bupa. It explores how better product and environment design can improve quality of life for care home residents with dementia. The design ideas developed are a practical response to the challenge of congnitive decline and can be retrofitted to existing care homes as well as applied to new developments.
