The Emergence Of Interior Architecture, Maryam Darbandi, Nadieh Imani, Mohammadreza Rahimzadeh Jul 2023

The Emergence Of Interior Architecture, Maryam Darbandi, Nadieh Imani, Mohammadreza Rahimzadeh

Interiority

Less than a century has passed since the creation or at least the use of the term interior architecture. Although interior architecture had existed before and was considered an inseparable part of architectural work, some developments and changes became the basis for the formation of interior architecture and, as a result, its appearance independently of architecture. The main impact of these developments in the independence of interior architecture can be traced to the 19th and 20th centuries when the field of two specialisations of the same family, interior decoration and interior design emerged. This article aims to take a …

Korean Public Bathhouse: Potential Of Interiority, Michelle Boyoung Huh Jul 2023

Korean Public Bathhouse: Potential Of Interiority, Michelle Boyoung Huh

Interiority

This essay introduces the Korean public bathhouse, jjimjil-bang, to understand the concept of interiority from sociocultural and psychological perspectives. The author addresses interiority as a continuous process of defining the range of intimacy that changes with context, space, and time. Interiority involves individuating spatial and situational moments in the blended physical, perceived, and imaged environment. In exploring interiority, the case of jjimjil-bang suggests broad perspectives for understanding spatial circumstances as an integration of the activity, environment, and situation. The author introduces the characteristics of jjimjil-bang in terms of the program, spatial structure, and meaning of memory. To demonstrate the …

From Interior To Interiority: Locating Key Historical Moments In The Relationship Between Spaces And Individuals, Bruno Cruz Petit Jul 2019

From Interior To Interiority: Locating Key Historical Moments In The Relationship Between Spaces And Individuals, Bruno Cruz Petit

Interiority

We spend increasingly more time in architectural interiors, spaces that can give us quality of life and interesting scenarios for the growth of identity and interiority. However, both spatial interior and psychological interiority faces difficulties inherent to contemporary life. This text proposes a critical review of the literature on the socio-spatial archeology of the subject in order to see possible paths of realisation of interiority in the present. The document presents several stages in the sociocultural evolution of an interior space that needs to be described with different adjectives (spiritual, hedonistic, promiscuous) and groups the most relevant contributions of the …

My work explores the nature of interiority and exteriority, the relationship between the centered inner self and the peripheral, the physicality of occupying the inside of a space or viewing that space from the outside.

Co-Creation: A Study Of Intimacy And Control, Erin Brooks Jan 2014

Co-Creation: A Study Of Intimacy And Control, Erin Brooks

Theses and Dissertations

Drawing from ongoing revitalization initiatives in Richmond, Virginia, this adaptive reuse project creates a structured dialogue between public and private expression to create a more immersive gallery experience for viewer and practitioner. The gallery experience is twofold; traditional object-based display and nontraditional process-based display. Preservation of the historic fabric of the existing Handcraft building at 1501 Roseneath is integrated with the transformative potential of introducing voyeuristic opportunities in creating a community arts center. Notions of voyeurism will center around ideas of visual connection and physical separation. This project questions if tactics of voyeurism, which inherently create physical barriers, can facilitate …

A “Filing System” For Teaching Research Skills In Interior Architecture Education, Jan Vanrie, Kris Pint Oct 2013

A “Filing System” For Teaching Research Skills In Interior Architecture Education, Jan Vanrie, Kris Pint

Learn X Design Conference Series

Creating physical environments for humans, more specifically the design disciplines of interior architecture/design, involves a wide variety of aspects to be considered: material, technical, cultural, psychological, artistic... It is therefore important to provide students with the necessary tools (research skills) not only to address the different types of problems and questions that arise during this creative process, but –ultimately- also to ensure the continuing development of interior architecture as a profession and as an academic discipline through the development of its proper research methods. However, we have been coming across a number of obstacles and challenges in our effort to …

Reflections And Prospects About The Relationship Between Master Thesis And Design Project In Interior Architectural Education, Ann Petermans, Jan Vanrie, Kris Pint, Koenraad Van Cleempoel

Learn X Design Conference Series

The Bologna process, initiated in 1999, propelled an ongoing reform of the European higher education. One of many processes is the integration of design schools – formerly belonging to a polytechnic or beaux-arts tradition – into academia. It presents challenges to universities and design schools alike. Commonly, many debates centre around the issue of research: output media, ‘measurability’ of output and the relationship between research and education. In this paper we would like to focus on the latter by discussing the set-up and organisation of our master programme in interior architecture. Reflecting about existing material of our students stimulated us …

Broad To Marshall Bridge | A City Block Interior That Separates And Connects Place, Emily Smith Apr 2012

Broad To Marshall Bridge | A City Block Interior That Separates And Connects Place, Emily Smith

Theses and Dissertations

This is a project about an old city block. It once housed confectioners, jewelers, restaurateurs, pharmacists, and retailers in street-level parcels with residents in the apartments above. Now, it is home to a barber, a few restaurateurs, and street vendors. Over 200 years of building and development have shaped what is now the north 100 block of E Broad Street and although most of it still stands, it shows the effects of renovations, time, and neglect. This is also a project about paths. As sidewalks move pedestrians along streets they provide paths to retailers, employers, homes, and places to gather …

Adaptive Re-Use Of Abandoned Structure - A Holistic Urban Experiment, Dongjoo Kang Jan 2006

Adaptive Re-Use Of Abandoned Structure - A Holistic Urban Experiment, Dongjoo Kang

Theses and Dissertations

Availability of good housing may no longer be an important issue for most U.S. citizens. Nowadays most are well housed and the problems confronting those who are not- except in the case of the homeless- are not highly visible. During the last decade, old warehouses in downtown Richmond, Virginia have been converted to new uses as restaurants, apartments, and offices. This reuse of old buildings has brought more people to the downtown area, making streets safer for pedestrians and residents than when the areas were abandoned. However, these well-designed and newly renovated apartments are not for everyone, especially low and …
