Solutions To Accessibility In Art & Design: A Multi-Sensory Art Installation, Olivia M. Robertson Jun 2022

Solutions To Accessibility In Art & Design: A Multi-Sensory Art Installation, Olivia M. Robertson

Graphic Communication

For my Senior Project, I wanted to explore possible solutions to accessibility in Art & Design while narrowing my focus specifically towards visual impairments by applying techniques commonly used in printed electronics methodology. I wanted to further showcase the impact of how designers enhance the overall user experience when they choose to center their focus on designing for accessibility.

To tackle accessibility challenges in Art & Design when it comes to visual impairments, I would have to extend Art’s visual impairments to include senses other than sight– tactile and auditory. The final product would then be an interactive art piece …

This document is the manuscript version before graphic design and copyediting. Follow this link to see the final version.

The situation that inspired and drove these aesthetic guidelines for campus master planning were unique to the history Bethel University and Seminary. By the early 1960s, Bethel was outgrowing its site on Snelling Avenue in St. Paul. The opportunity to purchase 160 acres in Arden Hills arose and the leap of faith was taken to buy this land and relocate. But it was not that simple. More was involved than mere practical problems of too-little space solved by an abundance …

The Potency Of Emptiness, Kennedy L. Bailey

Theses and Dissertations

I investigate language and neurology by integrating intangible personal experiences with painted manifestations of rupture within structures. I utilize a hyperbolic translation of white and black to investigate the dismantling of a structure as an explicit quotation of space, matter, existence, and mind.

Project Based Learning Syllabus - Csusb Art Department Brand Identity Re-Design, Andrew Oakes

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy

In this course and over the entire quarter you will be involved in a group project, which explores and aims to solve a real design and communication problem. As times have changed and the face of art and design has changed so has our perception of what art and design are, as well (and most importantly to you, “where do I fit in, and what skill sets will I need to be successful in this new creative workforce?) Three new studies show that the skills wanted by employers in the design related fields involve not only the hard skills like …

Images Of Suffering: An Investigation Of Francisco Goya's 'Disasters Of War' And William Blake's 'Illustrations For The Book Of Job', Chris Christenson Mar 2015

Images Of Suffering: An Investigation Of Francisco Goya's 'Disasters Of War' And William Blake's 'Illustrations For The Book Of Job', Chris Christenson

Library Research Prize Student Works

Francisco de Goya and William Blake, who we regard today as two of the greatest artists of the Romantic era, each produced a provocative set of engravings towards the end of his life. Goya's Los Desastres de la Guerra [The Disasters of War] and Blake's Illustrations for the Book of Job are both contemplations on human suffering, specifically unjust suffering, and our response to it. When placed in dialogue with one another, these sets of engravings unearth new dimensions in their interpretation and consequently in our own thinking about suffering. This paper will explore suffering and response through four themes …

The End(S) Of Art: Faith-Learning Integration Statement, Lex Thompson Jan 2014

The End(S) Of Art: Faith-Learning Integration Statement, Lex Thompson

Faith Learning Integration Papers

This essay demands something that is a little bit theology and a little bit art, and can only address a little bit of each. The material that follows does not presume to speak universally or systematically for either. Not only would such a thing be folly, but it would also be impossible. Systematic theology and systematic aesthetics are always a mess. Multiple volumes are written trying to sort out impossible situations gotten into by trying to systematize God, humanity, the world, the imagination, images and the complex of relationships that exist between them. We need to hold onto some of …

Simon Says Syndrome In Art And Design Education, Muhizam Mustafa, Mumtaz Begum Aboo Backer, A. S. Hardy Shafii, Azila Zainal Aug 2013

Simon Says Syndrome In Art And Design Education, Muhizam Mustafa, Mumtaz Begum Aboo Backer, A. S. Hardy Shafii, Azila Zainal

Learn X Design Conference Series

Learning is an important ‘task-conscious process’ that help changes in behaviour (or potential for change). In other words, learning is seen as an outcome - the ‘end product’ of some process. The ‘Simon Says Syndrome’ term was coined based on observation where teachers provide little learning for students other than the experience of doing. This resulted in students being apt at following instructions rather than exploring the process of learning. This paper also argues that ‘Simon Says Syndrome’ may be defined or reflected from the set of conventional practices and systems for teaching (or learning) especially within the art and …

Supporting Art And Design Student Transition Into Higher Education, Julie Haslam, W. Rod Cullen Jul 2013

Supporting Art And Design Student Transition Into Higher Education, Julie Haslam, W. Rod Cullen

Learn X Design Conference Series

In 2007 the UK National Audit Office reported retention levels as an important factor in measuring university success. It also reported institutional variations in withdrawal themes concluding that some differences were likely to relate to how well individual institutions were helping students to deal with the challenges of study in HE. As a great deal of research has found retention to be related to student satisfaction, and this in turn to be primarily dependent upon student preparedness and their expectations many institutions have focused on enhancing this area of the student experience. This paper raises awareness of the predominant role …

Innovation And Harmonization In Raphael's Stanza Della Segnatura, Nathan Cornelius Apr 2011

Innovation And Harmonization In Raphael's Stanza Della Segnatura, Nathan Cornelius

Library Research Prize Student Works

Raphael's paintings for the Stanza della Segnatura, Pope Julius II's personal library in the Vatican, are one of the great masterpieces of Renaissance art. My research project explored the rich meaning behind this innovative series of images, which project an expansive and holistic view of truth. I discovered that Raphael's message is relevant for Christians today who are trying to preserve a coherent view of truth in a complex, pluralistic culture.

Tailored: Living Through Wearable Design, Lindsay Vaughn Chenault Apr 2008

Tailored: Living Through Wearable Design, Lindsay Vaughn Chenault

Art and Design Theses

Tailored is a graphic design experiment which explores clothing as communication. It tells the story of my life through my body and the “designed” skirts I wear. Clothing is a visual representation of who we are and what we do. Through Tailored I am pushing the boundaries of how people read what I wear. I have designed and made skirts that explicitly define (through words, fabric and image) the six main compartments of my life. This paper records and explores the visual experiences I create for those around me and myself. Tailored is a personal investigation of how clothing speaks …

Sherkin Island Art Degree Project, John O'Connor

Academic Articles

In 1998 Technological University Dublin formed a partnership with the Sherkin Island Development Society to deliver a pilot programme in Art and Culture on an offshore island in the Atlantic. Developed around the needs of the local community the programme utilised a combination of live and remote teaching methods built around a series of intense workshops. The paper traces the genesis of the project and addresses three main questions: what it cost; what resources were required; and how it might be sustained. The pilot ran from October 2000 to May 2001and was so successful that a second offering has commenced …
