The Agency Of Graphic Design Towards Promoting Collective Awareness Of Heritage Inscriptions: A Study On The Erosion Of Palestinian Traditional Iconography, Belal Herbawi, Abhishek Chatterjee, Heitor Alvelos

IASDR Conference Series

This article discusses research to establish the extent of contemporary Palestinian graphic design's knowledge of traditional iconography and inclination towards its application in modern-day workflows. What new perspectives can graphic design contribute to heritage design? This paper discusses answers to these questions by examining the meanings and contents of the traditional Palestinian inscriptions by confirming those meanings and realizing the value of employing these inscriptions in the context of vibrant and developed creative industries in Palestine. Graphic Design And Artificial Intelligence: Interdisciplinary Challenges For Designers In The Search For Research Collaboration, Yaron Meron Jun 2022

Graphic Design And Artificial Intelligence: Interdisciplinary Challenges For Designers In The Search For Research Collaboration, Yaron Meron

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The introduction of electronic publishing, multimedia, the web and social media have influenced and presented challenges for graphic design. Now the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) features within graphic design software enables practitioners to automate many design processes. However, this threatens to deskill the profession and create a second tier of ‘non-professional’ designers, particularly within less creative work that emphasises fast turnover and functional artefact production. Research at the intersection of AI and graphic design has been led by computer scientists. This paper argues, from a designer’s perspective, that a paucity of scholarly engagement by graphic designers with their own …

Arabic Type In Urban Environments: A Graphic Heritage, Shaima Elbardawil

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Graphic design as a cultural object can contribute to the design of heritage in various ways. This study investigates the meaning of heritage and graphic design in relation to culture and communication. It discusses cultural heritage in Arab states with reference to Arabic type and introduces Naskh-style typefaces in wayfinding systems and signage as a graphic urban heritage. This is done using a framework for analyzing urban graphic heritage alongside empirical field study from the United Arab Emirates and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The study reveals that graphic design provides a unique framework toward understanding the role of typographic …

Abakabadaf: Reclamation Of Queer Spaces And The Adoption Of Gayspeak By The Mainstream, Gel Ralfrey Louie O. Romero May 2022

Abakabadaf: Reclamation Of Queer Spaces And The Adoption Of Gayspeak By The Mainstream, Gel Ralfrey Louie O. Romero

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress

Gayspeak is a queer argot that was formed to shield the Filipino LGBT community back when discrimination was rampant in the Philippines. Today, gayspeak can be observed in the vocabulary of people that are not part of the LGBT community which shows progress in tolerance. Despite this, the fight for queer equality has still not been achieved. This paper explores the adaptation of gayspeak by the mainstream by interviewing non-LGBT users of gayspeak and gathering the perceptions of the LGBT community towards them. The research found that non-LGBT people use gayspeak because of its comedic nature, capacity for socialization, and …

Mobile Application For Animal Health: A Design Research In User Interface, Sierra White

Georgia College Student Research Events

Apps function to increase productivity and allow the user to complete tasks conveniently from their mobile device. As a college student who has several pets, I have found that there is no good app on the market which caters to every pet parent’s needs, which forces them to download four or five apps. To combat this problem, FurPaws gives the user a way to document every aspect of their pet’s health and daily routine, as well as providing information on first aid and expert, real-time advice from veterinarians. The E-Vet page is available to guests who have not yet registered, …

The Four-Second Window: How The Time Constraint Of Working Memory And Other Psychological Principles Determine The Success Of A Graphic Design, Pino Trogu Oct 2013

The Four-Second Window: How The Time Constraint Of Working Memory And Other Psychological Principles Determine The Success Of A Graphic Design, Pino Trogu

Learn X Design Conference Series

This article discusses universal psychological principles derived from cognitive psychology that are useful in creating an effective graphic design. The most important are: the strict constraints of working memory which persists about four seconds, the viewers’ co-construction of perception and meaning based upon their prior relevant background knowledge including their knowledge of culturally constituted design conventions, especially those of genre. If the designer consciously exploits these cognitively and culturally constituted principles the result will be an effective graphic within a specific geographic and temporal context. Better designs are likely to result from familiarity with these principles.

It seems improbable that a student might graduate from four years of fulltime education with an honours degree and, simultaneously, three years of work experience. Yet this is the premise of the Design Agency Project at Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh. It celebrates four years within the BA Graphic Design programme so 2012 provides a natural opportunity for reflection, marking the graduation of the first cohort introduced to the project at the commencement of their studies. Annually, the students of the programme’s senior year form several design agencies. They brand and advertise vacancies, for which students in junior …

Ict, Ideation Pedagogy And Innovation Education: Setting A New Paradigm In Graphic Design Education, Edward Appiah, Johannes Cronjé

Learn X Design Conference Series

The introduction of ICT into graphic design education has also brought in some challenges as far as the pedagogy is concerned, as it requires relearning, training and upgrading. Whereas modern practices and education is flouted with ICT, the pedagogy of graphic design education, especially in the developing economies, which is an adaptation of the Bauhaus theory, is in variance with current practices in both the profession and in its education. As part of an going stuHAGENdy, we discusses the literature of current graphic design practices as a contribution to the adaptation of Innovation Education (IE) in a specific Virtual Reality …
