Finding Place: Chaos, Control, & I, Brandi Rackers Mar 2015

Finding Place: Chaos, Control, & I, Brandi Rackers

Theses

This thesis and accompanying exhibition seeks to investigate through visualization the role of individual units within a system through personal association with those individual units. The art forms in the exhibition are artifacts of the pseudo-scientific process that I have developed. Through scientific research and interpretations of personal experiences, the process seeks to explore system construction, functionality and degree of success regarding each. The role of the individual unit within systems and the manner in which it exercises a potent influence is elucidated. As a consequence, the exhibition provides self-reflective information and an environment for viewers to consider the effects …

Perceptions And Realities: Contemporary Impressions Of Formative And Temporal Experiences, Holly Lee Brewer Nov 2014

Perceptions And Realities: Contemporary Impressions Of Formative And Temporal Experiences, Holly Lee Brewer

Theses

This thesis describes contemporary, non-traditional printmaking processes aimed at creating a metaphor for our perceptions of time and how the passage of time affects us both internally and externally in our attempt at constructing our self-identity. The language of this metaphor adopts the internal patterns of tree burls and altered pieces of manufactured wood in communicating the transience of time and mutability of memory. Texture is highlighted in many of the pieces for the exhibition, not only with that of irregular wood grain, but also in the series with skin-like handmade flax paper. In order to demonstrate how memory is …

The fashion industry has advanced new technologies in the twenty-first century that has made producing apparel more cost effective with faster time-to-market capabilities and greatly reduced steps in the manufacturing process. The reasons for these improvements can be linked to new apparel computer-aided-design (CAD) technologies that have come about in the market as computers have advanced and grown in processing power and reduction in size since the 1980s. Computers are revolutionizing many industries and the way business is conducted in today’s modern workplace. Under A Pale Grey Sky: An Interactive Timeline Of Iroquoian Warfare And Its Impact On The Acceleration Of American Colonization, Thomas Weaver Jan 2013

Under A Pale Grey Sky: An Interactive Timeline Of Iroquoian Warfare And Its Impact On The Acceleration Of American Colonization, Thomas Weaver

Theses

Early American settlers thought the Iroquois to be a violent, forceful and barbaric amalgamation of Native American Nations. Their organization of warfare, community, and politics allowed them to remain one of the most powerful nations for many years. Conflict with other tribes was a normal part of life for the Iroquois and the surrounding nations. However, as the American settlers began moving towards the frontier, Iroquois conflicts with the Algonquian begin to rise in frequency. This led to weakening of the Iroquois population and allowed the American settlers to usurp land from the Six Nations without considerable opposition.

Human Powered Production Tool For The Renewable Material, Bamboo, Rashmi Kinariwala Jul 2010

Human Powered Production Tool For The Renewable Material, Bamboo, Rashmi Kinariwala

Theses

Sustainable design in a simple manner usually involves the impact of the things we design - their manufacturing process, time of use, and final disposal - on the earth's environment. In India, I was exposed to a different definition and concept of "sustainable design," some similar to the West, and some rather different. When a particular object is related to its context, it becomes a part of the living system, making it human-centered and deeply rooted in the culture. It has to do more by defining a relationship between the object and the user environment. In order to attain sustainability …

Human Behavior Centered Museum Guided Tour System, Yenmin Chen Sep 2008

Human Behavior Centered Museum Guided Tour System, Yenmin Chen

Theses

As new technologies appear, many devices or tools become more and more powerful. New technology also gives us more options to choose from in our daily lives, not only in ways used for school, but also with the devices used to surf the Internet. Certainly, we have more variety available in the various aspects of our lives, such as entertainment, education, work etc.--but new technology brings with it more problems, too. If new technology doesn't come with new thinking, life may not be better than before.

Some designers focus on human factors too much; they forget to consider how people …

Image’Nation : The Search For A Folk Image Of Ireland In Art And Popular Culture, 1849 To 1949., Ciarán Walsh

Theses

This study considers how visual images became central to the folk imagination of Irishness between 1849 and 1949. It begins with contrasting representations in photography of the Irish in the 1890s. The political/cultural contexts of images of Irishness is established and developed with reference to the juxtaposition of contemporary visual arts, folk song and nationalism in Kilmainham Gaol in 1991. It considers whether distinct cultural systems have historically competed for legitimacy and whether, specifically, art and tradition are incompatible in terms of a nationalist construction of Irishness. The Irishness of Irish art in the nineteenth century, the role of the …

St. Finbarre’S Cathedral And Other Ecclesiastical Work In County Cork By William Burges 1827 -1881, Debbie Dawson

Theses

In this thesis I set out to examine the important role played by William Burges in the revival of stained glass in the mid-nineteenth century. I have examined how his unique vision and obsession with the thirteenth century developed through his extensive travelling abroad, studying European architecture. My central discussion is on Burges’ first major commission at the age of thirty-five; St. Finbarre’s Cathedral, Cork. Through the use of local newspapers, correspondence and documentation, such as Vestry Minute Books, designs and cartoons stored in the Chapter House of St. Finbarre’s, I have tried to put the building of St. Finbarre’s …

Growth Of An Artist, Fu-Hsin Luan

Theses

The works in this exhibition were selected from works completed over the past year . Examples included oil paintings and photographs. The exhibition consists of seventeen works - ten oil paintings and seven photographs. The inspiration for the theme was from ordinary life. I tried to experiment with different expressions and techniques in the subject matter of the exhibition.

The oil paintings portray landscapes in a traditional manner and abstraction with a strong overall emphasis on rich color schemes and value contrast.

The seven photographs were to appear simple and quiet. I have done some photography before entering graduate work. …

An Art Therapy Program For Women Who Are Chemically Dependent And/Or Victims Of Domestic Violence: A Training Manual, Mary H. Cook

Theses

Women who are chemically dependent and/or victims of domestic violence have difficulty identifying and expressing feelings. One of the most important aspects of recovery is learning to feel again and to talk a bout feelings.

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which the therapist utilizes visual expression as a means of communication. The most common traits of these clients are low self-esteem, depression, anger, and a sense of helplessness . By making the issues symbolic, art therapy facilitates communication and reduces confusion.

This study presents an overview of art therapy, and a training manual is included for therapists …

Reflections From A Soul Of Glass, Mills Lyon Jan 1985

Reflections From A Soul Of Glass, Mills Lyon

Theses

I have long had a "love-affair" with photography. As a teacher of photography and a "semi-professional" photographer, I desired to further my study of photography by seeking a master's degree in this field. In so doing, I have had many opportunities to examine my feelings toward this subject and my relationship with it.

The purpose of this paper is to explore both my technical and aesthetic relationships with photography. In examining these two areas, I have also looked at my photographic past as well as the photographic involvement in my present way of living.

In Chapter One I examine what …

In this paper I will review some of the literature on aging that delineates the individual differences in physical and mental characteristics of the old . Some of the more prominent theories of the aging process will be presented briefly, with an examination of physical and psychological changes that affect the older person's ability to cope with an environment characterized by multiple loss, both physical and emotional. Myths about how age influences the …
