Artist's Statement:
Twenty-one is a composition portrait of a teenager. The technique employed includes printing the image on 5” x 7” aluminum flashing, using an inkjet transfer process. While investigating alternative printing processes, I learned of German artist Berit Myreboe’s hauntingly beautiful portraits that are manipulated transfer prints on aluminum, accented with paint. I emulated Myreboe’s work in using aluminum as a printing surface for my portraits, but I decided not to add paint to soften the images. I utilized aluminum as a printing surface to add depth to the work and to reinforce a sense of constant change as …

Bridgewater Review
Last spring, five Bridgewater State University art professors emeritus displayed their artworks on campus, depicting their personal reminiscences of the Art Center, the university’s oldest building. The mixed media exhibition was held in Boyden Hall, the building that housed the art department in a basement location until January 1976, when the department was moved to the Art Center. Participating former faculty members were John Droege, Roger Dunn, Joan Hausrath, Dorothy Pulsifer and Stephen Smalley, long-serving colleagues in the art department.

In Between Seeing And Representing: An Exploration Of Visual Expression, Andrew Linde
In Between Seeing And Representing: An Exploration Of Visual Expression, Andrew Linde
Undergraduate Review
Strong design solutions are rarely arrived at by chance and are often inconceivable without an evolutionary process of ideation. Carefully crafted messages that take into account how a reader interprets an image demand the skills of a designer who is in a sense a translator, visualizing abstract concepts in concrete form. My inquiry revolves around the process of representing a salt shaker through a series of visual studies using diverse methods of expression such abstraction, reduction, and stylization. The intention was to investigate the question; What are the limits and possibilities of visual expression in the representation of a simple …

Martha Stewart's Graphic Design For Living, Melanie Mcnaughton
Martha Stewart's Graphic Design For Living, Melanie Mcnaughton
Bridgewater Review
A living brand or a force of darkness, Martha Stewart is an indomitable figure in 20thcentury domestic life and her place in North American domestic history is tied to the success of Martha Stewart Living, the flagship publication of the Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (MSLO) empire. The success of Living is tied to its graphic design. Living typographically enacts the values it argues for by fusing traditional elements with modern edges to present a vision of homemaking that is soft and appealing yet also a statement of skilled precision and quality. Tacking between broad, more theoretical analysis and close …

Painting The Words: Language And Literature In The Visual Arts, Stephanie Lawrence
Painting The Words: Language And Literature In The Visual Arts, Stephanie Lawrence
Undergraduate Review
In his essay, The Poet, Ralph Waldo Emerson writes: “The poet is the sayer, the namer, and represents beauty. He is a sovereign and stands on the centre. For the world is not painted or adorned, but it is from the beginning beautiful; and God has not made some beautiful things, but Beauty is the creator of the universe” (1182). He goes on to say, “The poet has a new thought; he has a whole new experience to unfold; he will tell us how it was with him, and all men will be richer in his fortune. For, the experience …
