Dark Skate, Lia Halloran Jan 2007

Dark Skate, Lia Halloran

Art Faculty Creative Works – Exhibitions

"The ten photographs on view were taken at night in various Los Angeles locations ranging from spaces appropriated by skateboarders, such as the Los Angeles River, to skate parks and backyard ramps.

The works blur the boundaries of photography and become self-portraits and drawings as well as records of performances. Light is used to form the drawing line while HALLORAN skateboards at night through different venues. The resulting images are each a trajectory of the artist’s movements over time. The photographs pair urban environments with lines of light which behave as physical objects or break apart into flurries of ...

Temporality, Impermanence And The Museum The Ethics Of Conservation And The Works Of Anselm Kiefer, Virginia A. Dressler May 2003

Temporality, Impermanence And The Museum The Ethics Of Conservation And The Works Of Anselm Kiefer, Virginia A. Dressler

Virginia A Dressler

Using some of the concepts from Heidegger's 'The origin of a work of art'
as a foundation, I will argue that every work is a unique and original entity, not
capable of being simulated or repeated by artificial means. A work is bound by the
temporal nature of its own material, as in all forms of matter. The product of
restoration work is ultimately a copy of the original, destroying a work's original
essence of time, material and space. Museums often present works as absolutes
within seemingly timeless walls of illusion. An environment of immortality is often
conveyed ...

Water And Woodfiring, Richard Bresnahan Jun 2000

Water And Woodfiring, Richard Bresnahan

Asian Studies Faculty Publications

Part of a special section on the 1999 International Woodfire Conference. The technique of putting water into a high-temperature woodfired kiln is discussed. This 800-year-old technique is used to oxidize the environment, clear carbon, and quickly cool the pottery. It produces unique, beautiful textures and colors, particularly a rich earth-tone palette that cannot be paralleled by chemical glazes or other firing techniques. This technique was used in a Teppo-gama (gun kiln) based on designs from 12th-century Korean tunnel kilns, built on the island of Tanegashima, Japan, in 1969. The writer discusses the work of a number of artists who use ...

Eight Teacher-Potters, Bob Daugherty Jan 1974

Eight Teacher-Potters, Bob Daugherty

Masters Theses

This paper presents a survey of statements and the works of eight teacher-potters in Illinois. The works range from simple functional ware to funk art objects. The firing temperatures range from low fire white ware to high fire salt. The styles of the work are many; the philosophies of the work varied; and techniques of the work are diversified; but common to each work is its creation from idea to actuality by the teacher-potter. Beyond depicting the work, the paper attempts to establish the teacher-potter who created the work by showing photographs of him and by presenting his ideas and ...
