At RISD, I’ve been prompted to expand the scope and tools of my practice and to reflect on questions of meaning in my work.

I spend my days making things, but I’ve never really had good answers to questions of why I make the things I make, or what their meaning is. I don’t think there are simple answers to these questions.

Particular Proceedings is the outcome of an ongoing quest to understand the origins and motivations of my creative process as a designer.

Moving In, Moving Up, Moving On explores the processes of Chinese culture and space in America of adaptation, assimilation, and preservation that underlie food changes. As Chinatowns across the US have evolved and residents have relocated, former centers of Chinese cultural identity have progressively transformed into restaurant districts with increasingly diverse populations and space gentrification.

Our childhood, education, family, and environment form and bind our cognitive perspective. How does regulatory power operate in graphic design and what—if anything—can the graphic designer do to subvert that operation? This thesis uses the exclamation point to represent a way of thinking and working methodology. The exclamation point in mathematics represents a factorial function, an operation for determining all possible orders of a set. Colloquially, the meaning of the exclamation point relies entirely on context. Within a yellow triangle, it means caution or danger, but at the end of a sentence delivering good news, it means excitement. In the context of this thesis, the exclamation point represents enthusiastically and exhaustively reordering objects, words, and processes to highlight shifting meaning.

Refiguring Relations sets conditions for interdependence and visualizes the affective relationships that people have with one another. Through scripts and participatory experiences, my work explores, challenges, and formulates expressions of collaboration. In reading experiences, both print and digital, models of circulation and accessibility allow the audience to see and affect each others’ interactions. The abstractions of reading, writing, metaphors, mythology, code, cryptography, interfaces, and other such symbolic languages are leveraged as tools for understanding. My practice is an inquiry into the fluctuation of value. To deconstruct the simplistic consumer tropes of mundane/luxury, simple/complex, or hidden/obvious, I experiment with speculative forms of hybridization using interactive media platforms to create an alternate temporality. Microscopic moments open the door to design opportunities. Through field observations, image sequences, data, and archives of artifacts, I roll out the simple signifiers of symbolic value to pause attention while also exposing the paradox of our consumptive behaviors.

This thesis paper reflects upon the costume design process taken by Emma Hollows to produce a realist production of the Junction Avenue Theatre Company’s musical Sophiatown at the Augusta Savage Gallery at the University of Massachusetts in May 2020. Sophiatown follows a household forcibly removed from their homes by the Native Resettlement Act of 1954 amid apartheid in South Africa. The paper discusses her attempts as a costume designer to strike a balance between replicating history and making artistic changes for theatre, while always striving to create believable characters.

My practice, especially this virtual garden, is a collage made of media, images, and virtual space across different eras and time signatures.
