The project documented in this catalog were first conceived in early 1978 by Ed Levine, then chairman of the Department of Art and Art History at Wright State University, and Betty Collings, then director of the University Gallery at The Ohio State University in Columbus. Both institutions had, for five years, been sponsoring a variety of exhibitions and experimental projects that probed various aspects of contemporary art. The similarity of goals between the two institutions made this collaborative effort possible.

"Current Charts: Chosen Lands", by Richard Fisher, was the title of an exhibition ho s ted by the Fine Arts Gallery from February 9 through March 1, 1978. It comprised sixty-six works spatially and formally separated into two groups by the two levels of the gallery. The lower level presented forty-one works, primarily surface castings of specific sites along the Massachusetts coast, while the upper level housed the artist's Eco-Earth , an incomplete series of twenty-five imaginative drawings.
