Ideological Conflicts In Early American Books, Clarence H. Faust
Ideological Conflicts In Early American Books, Clarence H. Faust
The Courier
The following is an address given by Dr. Clarence H. Faust at the 1957 Syracuse University Scholastic Achievement Dinner. When this article was written almost twenty years later, during the celebration of the bicentennial anniversary, it seems pertinent that the conflicts inherent in the American expression of democracy were so clearly outlined by the late Dr. Faust.

Some Observations On The Loyalist Experience: 1770-1780, Susan Abadessa
The Courier
Two hundred years after the American Revolution, the conflict is still being represented for the most part as a war between the people of the united colonies and the government of England. The Colonists who were slow to join the revolutionary cause are still regarded by many as traitors. Whether principle or personal gain led so many to remain loyal to England makes no more difference today than it did then. The English patriots among the colonists paid a hard price for their loyalty to the wrong side.

Andrew Sarris And The Politique Des Auteurs (1962-1974): An Assessment And An Analysis, Steven Grumbacher
Andrew Sarris And The Politique Des Auteurs (1962-1974): An Assessment And An Analysis, Steven Grumbacher
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The politique des auteurs was, from the period 1968 through 1973, the dominant methodology in cinematic criticism. It was tentatively formulated by Francois Truffaut in 1954 and greatly expanded upon by Andrew Sarris in 1962. Briefly, the “auteur theory” (as it is known in English speaking countries.) contends that aesthetically important films are the product of an auteur--an equivalent term to author in a work of literature or composer as opposed to conductor in a musical composition--and that that auteur is usually the film’s director. The quality of the film under scrutiny is directly related to the ability of that …

El Machismo En Mexico Y Tres Novelas De Mariano Azuela, Enrique M. Santamaría
American Studies ETDs
This dissertation surveys what several social thinkers have said about machismo and the manner in which the concept figures in Mariano Azuela's fiction. The word is a modern term, non-existent in Castillian dictionaries, which derives from the word macho. It is applied to certain individuals to describe characteristics of destructive and narcissistic behavior usually accompanied by an exaggerated and false show of force, boldness and masculinity.

Kate Chopin In Transition From Local To Naturalism, Roselyn Cornwell Hines
Theses & Honors Papers
My thesis concentrates on Mrs.Katherine O'Flaherty Chopin, a Southerner who published between 1889 and 1899, and who, for years, was considered an obsolete Local Colorist. She is now enjoying a revival of interest which must be attributed to her importance as a writer who exhibited those precepts upon which modern literature is based - those found in the movements of Realism and Naturalism.
With literary roots in the Local Color mode,Mrs.Chopin's early works exemplify, to some extent at least, all of its principles. While she falters somewhat in the dominant literary technique, we find the Local Colorist's emphasis on geography, …

Archaeological Investigations At Sites In The Upper Cibolo Creek Watershed, Central Texas, Thomas C. Kelly, Thomas R. Hester
Archaeological Investigations At Sites In The Upper Cibolo Creek Watershed, Central Texas, Thomas C. Kelly, Thomas R. Hester
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
In August, 1976, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted an intensive archaeological survey of the proposed Floodwater Retarding Structure No.1 area, in the Upper Cibolo Creek Watershed, Kendall County, Texas. The work was carried out under the terms of a contract (135-TX-SCS-76) with the U.S.D.A. Soil Conservation Service. An initial survey of this area had been conducted in February, 1975; two historic and 17 prehistoric archaeological sites were documented at that time (Bass and Hester 1975).
The intensive survey had three major objectives: (1) to conduct additional reconnaissance, thus insuring that all possible …
