“Natural Disaster Plans And How They Need To Be Fixed”, Christopher Poitevien
“Natural Disaster Plans And How They Need To Be Fixed”, Christopher Poitevien
Outstanding Honors Theses
Natural disasters have affected our history, affect our present, and will affect our future. Because of this our world needs to adapt. But disaster plans already established should include certain aspects that would limit the amount of damage inflicted by the disaster and the number of lives that are lost. The problem with the literature is that it does not cover what should be done to decrease the number of lives lost and limit the damage that could occur. The first thing that it needs is disaster epidemiologists. These are scientists that go back into the history of the area …

Anatomy Of The Concussion: More Serious Than Meets The Eye?, Chelsea Frost
Outstanding Honors Theses
Sports-related concussions have unique features that distinguish them from those mild traumatic brain injuries (MTBI’s) caused by other mechanisms. Sports-related MTBI’s may result from relatively lower-velocity impacts as compared with high-speed motor vehicle collisions, and are thought to cause different neurophysiologic injury. A survey of youth coaches revealed 42% believed a concussion only occurs when an athlete loses consciousness, and 25% would allow the athlete to return to play despite showing symptoms of concussion. Concussions occur not only in youth sports but also at the collegiate and professional levels. It is believed that, post-concussion, an athlete has diminished reaction time, …
Anti-Malarial Activity Exhibited By Florida Mangrove Endophytes, Jacqueline Lee Salm
Anti-Malarial Activity Exhibited By Florida Mangrove Endophytes, Jacqueline Lee Salm
Outstanding Honors Theses
Many organisms around the world including plants, marine organisms, and microbes release chemicals used for things such as pigment or defense against other organisms. These chemicals are known as secondary metabolites and have been found to exhibit promising activity against many infectious diseases and cancer. Natural products chemistry is the study of these secondary metabolites with one of the purposes to discover new small organic molecules for potential pharmaceutical use in the future. With parasitic diseases, such as malaria, prominent throughout the poorest regions of the world, there are great opportunities for discovering anti-malarial drugs from natural products. Approximately 250 …

Alzheimer’S Disease And Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Review Of Etiology, Clinical Diagnosis, And The Involvement Of Dendritic Spines, Stephen Aradi
Outstanding Honors Theses
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder affecting a range of cognitive faculties, for which there is currently no treatment, save for ameliorative strategies. This disease primarily affects the elderly, and is the leading cause of dementia among this group. Out of an estimated 5.4 million Americans with AD this year, 5.2 million are over the age of 65. With the amount of people aged 65 and older increasing as the Baby Boomer generation ages, AD will become an increasingly dire burden. As we face this growing issue, research into both its causes and more sensitive and accurate diagnostic …

Secondary Metabolites From Antarctic Marine Invertebrates And Their Potential As Drug Leads, Samantha Landolfa
Secondary Metabolites From Antarctic Marine Invertebrates And Their Potential As Drug Leads, Samantha Landolfa
Outstanding Honors Theses
The Antarctic region is of particular interest to natural products chemists because it remains relatively unexplored and possesses a wealth of unique biodiversity. Organisms that thrive in this region must produce different chemical defenses to survive in the harsh polar environment, making their secondary metabolites original and potentially useful as drugs for human disease. These compounds often have very complex structures, making their syntheses difficult and impractical. With this knowledge, five Antarctic marine invertebrates were extracted in search of their secondary metabolites. The chemical isolation studies were performed by macroorganism solvent extraction followed by chromatographic separation and purification of metabolites …

A Global Assessment Of Large Scale Earthquakes: The Impact Of Mitigation And Preparation Policies On The Loss Of Human Life, Derek Hayward
Outstanding Honors Theses
This research examines emergency management mitigation and preparation polices in the hazard area of seismic events. With major earthquakes receiving high profile attention in the media, these events have caused widespread fear, physical damage to buildings and infrastructure and loss of life. This research evaluates the weaknesses that are currently affecting areas where earthquakes remain a constant threat. This study uses cases to provide rich description regarding several events and looks in-depth at six seismic events. Variables are sourced from the United Stated Geological Survey and show the magnitude of the earthquake and the official death and injury count for …

The Pronoun Problem: Possible Changes In The Use Of Epicene Pronouns, Morgan Dean, Brittany Norton
Outstanding Honors Theses
This study explores the possible bias of gender in the English language and was designed to replicate and extend Noll (1999). We assessed reaction times to lexical decision tasks (i.e., deciding whether a letter string forms a word) following sentences containing supposedly epicene (gender neutral) pronouns "he" and singular "they." We asked whether both feminine and masculine words would be equally accessible following sentences utilizing the epicene "he" and singular "they." Participants ( N=208) were presented with a series of opinion statements and indicated whether they agreed or disagreed. At various points within the sentences, the participants completed the …

Crafting Character Through Emotion And Reason, Aliene Dalton
Crafting Character Through Emotion And Reason, Aliene Dalton
Outstanding Honors Theses
This thesis follows a reproduction of Aristotle's The Art of Rhetoric in hopes of assisting undergraduate students of Creative Writing majors. Its model will cast types and utility of reasoning alongside respective emotions in an episodic debate under the same methodology of Aristotle, enthymeme1 and example2, and the emotions of Aristotle's study will be organized by the system of reason they produce, practical, imperfect, or perfect. I have selected this method for, although Aristotle's work studies the various elements which constitute components of emotion, his work is without a cyclic theory of emotions' interconnection.
The advantage of reproducing Aristotle's rhetoric …

Dendritic Alterations In A Tauopathy Rat Model Of Alzheimer’S Disease Using Pp2a Inhibition, Sean Verma, Khalid Iqbal, Ronald F. Mervis
Outstanding Honors Theses
PP2A is protein phosphatase-2A. Inhibition of PP2A (by PP2A inhibitors 1 and 2) results in hyperphosphorylation and accumulation of tau protein. Hyperphosphorylated tau is a major component of neurofibrillary tangles – a pathological hallmark of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Hence PP2A inhibition represents a putative new approach for a rodent model of AD. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of PP2A inhibition on dendritic branching in cortical pyramids in rats that wereinjected ICV with an adeno- associated virus for expression of: (1) Inhibitor 1 full length (I1 FL) (2) Inhibitor 2 full length (I2 FL) (3) Inhibitor …

Exhibition Of A Rhinoceros: Iconography And Collecting In Eighteenth Century Venice, Alexa Torchynowycz
Outstanding Honors Theses
This paper examines the painting titled The Exhibition of a Rhinoceros (1751) by the Venetian artist Pietro Longhi and its context within the art patronage of the Venetian patrician Giovanni Grimani ai Servi. Study of the decline of Venice‟s political power during the eighteenth century, the lineage of rhinoceros imagery begun by the famous Renaissance German artist, Albrecht Dürer, and Italian collecting practices of naturalia influenced by the sixteenth century natural scientist, Ulisse Aldrovandi, were factors in the development of the thesis. Previously, many art historians have interpreted The Exhibition of a Rhinoceros as representing the "spectacle" of Venetian Carnival. …
