Ekphrasis, Intertextuality And The Role Of The Reader In Poems By Francisco Brines And Claudio Rodríguez, W. Michael Mudrovic

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Ekphrasis, the verbal representation of visual art, affords a singular perspective on a discrepancy between the general conception of intertextuality and its practical application. Each poet achieves diverse effects with a different handling of the respective paintings, yet both come to surprisingly similar conclusions with regard to the poetic act. Brines's depiction of the martyrdom of St. Sebastian supplies a limited amount of information that dovetails neatly with the use of metaphor and metonymy. Rodríguez's use of synecdoche …

A Directory Of Loose Ends, Angelique Cain Jennings

Masters Theses

A Directory of Loose Ends is comprised of a collection of thirty original poems, and a prose afterword. The collection of poems is divided into three groups according to subject, tone, and technique. The afterword details influences, biographical elements, and inspiration.

The first group consists mostly of poems in which mythical characters such as Grendel, Penelope, and Ulysses, speak. Unidentified speakers also offer myths of other kinds, such as "Salvador Dali in a Wheelchair on TV," in which an imaginative speaker addresses the painter, describing for him a dream she claims he has had, and "Confirmations," in which the speaker …

A New Topography: Elizabeth Bishop's Late Poems, Jennifer Soalt

Honors Papers

Geography III, the title of Elizabeth Bishop's last book of poems prepares her readers for both a passage through familiar territory and an exploration of unmapped terrain. A return to the northern landscape of A Cold Spring and the southern landscape of Brazil is promised at the same time that a third and entirely new landscape is hinted at; we can find the Nova Scotia of "At the Fishouses" and "Cape Breton" in "The Moose" and "The End of March" and we can find the tropics of "Song for the Rainy Season" and "The Armadillo" in "Crusoe in England", but …

Also adhering to one of my …

Poets whose work has been important and influential in my writing this year include Pablo Neruda, Yannis Ritsos, Francis Jamroes, Charles Simic, Larry Levis and Pamela Stewart. Suggested Criteria For Determining The Antiquity Of The Ancient Poems In The Old Testament, John Miller May 1967

Suggested Criteria For Determining The Antiquity Of The Ancient Poems In The Old Testament, John Miller

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Within the Old Testament there is a group of poems which a majority of scholars believe is quite old. In most of the books and articles which have been written on these poems, the songs are designated "ancient" or "archaic" in a rather arbitrary manner. It is the contention of this thesis that the archaic poetry is different from later poetic writing with respect to style, form, and language, and that it is possible to isolate the distinguishing characteristics of ancient poetry and, using them, to form criteria and establish a balance of probability as to the antiquity of a …
