The following paper is the description of a related arts project involving the production of a body of original work incorporating the fields of art and literature. The original work is in the form of a book containing poetry and prose-poems with illustrations. Photographs and copies of the complete work are included in this paper.

Through the course of the year, I have been writing and revising poetry with a concern for the growth of my work. To that end, I took advantage of the time afforded me by the Senior Scholars Program not only to devote myself to writing, but to reading the poems of American, European and South American poets from the point of view of craft. The majority of this collection consists of the handwritten and typed poetry of Martha Carpenter Miller. Many of the poems underwent multiple edits and rewrites, and her notes and corrections to her poems are included in this collection. The collection spans the years 1898-1962, with the bulk of the material from the 1930s-1950s. Miller wrote extensively, and the collection includes poems and partial poems, ideas, and short verses written on scrap paper, envelopes, paper towels, carboard, postcards, and various other types of paper. The Campbell-Staats collection consists of two separate series of information. The first series is comprised of the Jennie Ratliff Campbell papers. These papers consist mainly of personal correspondence to Miss Ratliff dating from 1875-1888. The majority of these letter were from two particular individuals, R. G. Drysdale and W. S. Livengood, and concerned everyday occurrence and mutual acquaintances. The remainder of the series is made up of samples from her schoolwork, songs she had copied, business correspondence, and a book of poetry given to her by her fiancee, C. W. Campbell.

Within the Old Testament there is a group of poems which a majority of scholars believe is quite old. In most of the books and articles which have been written on these poems, the songs are designated "ancient" or "archaic" in a rather arbitrary manner.
