The Michigan Relics Revisited
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
One of the most enduring archaeological hoaxes, the Michigan relics, a series of copper, slate, and clay forgeries, were “discovered” throughout counties in Michigan from the late 19th century until 1920. James Scotford and Daniel Soper apparently worked together to create and sell the forgeries. Scholars and archaeologists were skeptical from the outset, but interest in the objects persisted. In 1911 James E. Talmage studied the relics, recognizing the impact they could have on the perception of the Book of Mormon if they were genuine. In a detailed report, Talmage dismissed them as blatant forgeries.

On The Altar Of Industry: A History Of The Kingston Plains, Donovan Murphy
Upper Country: A Journal of the Lake Superior Region
The Kingston Plains are a remnant of historic practice in logging of clear cutting, of timber cruising, of wildfire impacts, and of attempted ecological remediation. It is a reminder of human impacts an odd, a mostly treeless place.

Creating A Generalized Michigan School Constitution, Kurstin K. Frank
Creating A Generalized Michigan School Constitution, Kurstin K. Frank
Honors Projects
Educational theories in the past have attempted to define, arrange, and design education to benefit society, institutions, and students of all ages. The conversations surrounding those educational theories, however, have consistently neglected to include those that the structures, policies, and purpose of education will benefit the most: the students. This research project was devised to include student voice within the conversations surrounding educational theories through the construction of a Generalized Michigan School Constitution. By delving into those theories of education, the researcher was able to dissect the five most common theories and beliefs within education to be able to decipher …

Prologue /The Lake Within
I am a fisherman. Every time I raise my arm to cast, I’m searching for an answer.
What is a lake?
I throw my lure at the lilies of my childhood, the sunken log of my crib. With every cast I hope the truth will follow it back, this little piece of me I offer to the mystery.
My earliest memories are at the bus stop, where a shroud of mist swirled about me and I listed side-to-side, six-AM eyes drooping while I waited for that big yellow ship to bust through the fog and …

Sporting Houses, Soiled Doves, And Bad Repute: Houses Of Ill Fame In Marquette, 1870-1943, Emily Tinder
Upper Country: A Journal of the Lake Superior Region
Within the male-dominated economic landscape of Marquette's founding era, many women turned to the illicit business of selling sex to make a living. In the absence of self-created primary sources, court case records and newspaper accounts dating between 1870 and 1943 reveal small pieces of the lives of dozens of such women. Yet while the stories of underground miners and northwoods lumberjacks have been studied in detail, these sex workers have been ignored and forgotten almost entirely; a broader social history, without moral bias, can account for many of the women who worked alongside the men who dominate our historical …
