Two Plays Of Ancient India: Shakuntala And The Little Clay Cart, Mohan Limaye Dec 2008

Two Plays Of Ancient India: Shakuntala And The Little Clay Cart, Mohan Limaye

Mohan Limaye

Two masterpieces of ancient Indian dramatic literature will be studied intensely, one a romance and the other a (tragi)comedy, with analyses of the culture or milieu in which they had their origin. Though we will consult other sources of Indian culture, the main emphasis in the course will be on “extracting” cultural information from the plays themselves. Thematically speaking, the students will see how both plays explore love in all its aspects, from the purely carnal to almost spiritual, from conjugal love to love among friends, and bonds between parents and children. The two plays also complement each other very …

Pittsburghese Shirts: Commodification And The Enregisterment Of An Urban Dialect, Barbara Johnstone Dec 2008

Pittsburghese Shirts: Commodification And The Enregisterment Of An Urban Dialect, Barbara Johnstone

Barbara Johnstone

This article considers a type of material artifact that circulates ideas about regional speech in the United States: T-shirts bearing words and phrases thought to be unique to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I argue that Pittsburghese shirts, seen for themselves and in the context of their production, distribution, and consumption, are part of a process leading to the creation and focusing of the idea that there is a Pittsburgh dialect. To describe how particular locally hearable forms have become linked with the city, I invoke Asif Agha’s concept of “enregisterment.” To understand why this has happened at the time and in the …

'Peter Bell The Third': Contempt And Poetic Transfiguration.Pdf, Stephen C. Behrendt

Stephen C Behrendt

This essay examines Shelley's ambitious satirical poem, "Peter Bell the Third" (1819), tracing Shelley's careful satirical response to Wordsworth's Peter Bell (1819) and tracing Shelley's complex agenda in the poem for revealing his disappointment and dissatisfaction with the great poet whose works he had earlier admired so much.

Making Property Productive: Reorganizing Rights To Real And Equitable Estates In Britain, 1660 To 1830, Gary Richardson Dec 2008

Making Property Productive: Reorganizing Rights To Real And Equitable Estates In Britain, 1660 To 1830, Gary Richardson

Gary Richardson

Between 1660 and 1830, Parliament passed thousands of Acts restructuring rights to real and equitable estates. These estate Acts enabled individuals and families to sell, mortgage, lease, exchange and improve land previously bound by inheritance rules and other legal legacies. The loosening of these legal constraints facilitated the reallocation of land and resources towards higher-value uses. Data reveal correlations between estate Acts, urbanization and economic development during the decades surrounding the Industrial Revolution.

'Not Wrong For Long': The Role And Penetration Of News Wire Agencies In The 24/7 Landscape, Jane Johnston Dec 2008

'Not Wrong For Long': The Role And Penetration Of News Wire Agencies In The 24/7 Landscape, Jane Johnston

Jane Johnston

This paper examines the role of Australia’s single news agency, Australian Associated Press (AAP), in the Australian news media landscape. Specifically, we examine the prevalence of AAP copy in the ‘Breaking News’ sections of two major news websites in an effort to create a preliminary understanding of the impact of AAP on Australian news content. The results suggest an overwhelming reliance on copy from not just AAP, but international news agencies, in major news websites. Increasingly, the need for large volumes of news copy, coupled with the need for that copy to be published online as soon as possible, would …

Hierarchical Modeling: Biogeochemical Processes And Mechanisms That Drives Clay Nano- And Microfabric Development, Kenneth J. Curry, Richard H. Bennett, Paula J. Smithka, Matthew H. Hulbert Dec 2008

Hierarchical Modeling: Biogeochemical Processes And Mechanisms That Drives Clay Nano- And Microfabric Development, Kenneth J. Curry, Richard H. Bennett, Paula J. Smithka, Matthew H. Hulbert

Kenneth J. Curry

Conceptual scientific models of clay and clay fabric development can be constructed profitably by considering chemical and physical systems in terms of an ordered hierarchy. We develop here a hierarchical model of early stages of marine sediment development identifying processes and focusing on mechanisms. While the focus of our model is on mechanisms, the physical aspects of the hierarchy are cast in terms of the scale of structure in which the mechanisms occur. Our primary scale of interest is the nanometer (nanofabric) level of organization of sediment fabric. This level is nested below the micrometer (microfabric) level that includes aggregates …

Blurring For Clarity: Archaeology As Hybrid Practice, Stephen W. Silliman Dec 2008

Blurring For Clarity: Archaeology As Hybrid Practice, Stephen W. Silliman

Stephen W. Silliman

In an effort to decolonize the field, archaeologists, particularly historical archaeologists, have used post-colonial notions of hybridity to interpret past (and present) colonialism and especially the experiences of indigenous people therein. Archaeologists also have countered the colonialist tendencies of the discipline through repatriation efforts and Indigenous participation. This paper blends these two trends as a way of exploring the possibilities of archaeology as a hybrid practice. I refer in particular to the collaborative and indigenous archaeologies of recent years and the complex ways that identities and practices interface therein. In this complex post-colonial (or neocolonial) world, it is worth considering …

Internet Killed The Copyright Law: Perfect 10 V. Google And The Devastating Impact On The Exclusiive Right To Display, Deborah B. Morse Dec 2008

Internet Killed The Copyright Law: Perfect 10 V. Google And The Devastating Impact On The Exclusiive Right To Display, Deborah B. Morse

Deborah Brightman Morse

Never has the dissonance between copyright and innovation been so extreme. The Internet provides enormous economic growth due to the strength of e-commerce, and affords an avenue for creativity and the wide dissemination of information. Nevertheless, the Internet has become a plague on copyright law. The advent of the digital medium has made the unlawful reproduction, distribution, and display of copyrighted works essentially effortless. The law has been unable to keep pace with the rapid advance of technology. For the past decade, Congress has been actively attempting to draft comprehensible legislation in an effort to afford copyright owners more protection …

Campaign Design And Management, Ronald D. Smith Dec 2008

Campaign Design And Management, Ronald D. Smith

Ronald D Smith APR

The role of strategic planning in public relations is rooted in today's understanding of the profession, an understanding that can move a practitioner beyond being simply a wordsmith or organizational mouthpiece and into a seat at the management table. Practitioners skilled in strategic planning are sought out to help build relationships and solve problems.

This chapter focuses first on some definitions dealing with projects versus campaigns and then on two types of campaigns proactive or reactive. This chapter goes beyond projects, the tasks associated with public relations, such as writing effective news releases, creating an interactive Web site, or orchestrating …
