Introduction To Ritual Theory Ritual Practice, Catherine M. Bell Dec 2009

Introduction To Ritual Theory Ritual Practice, Catherine M. Bell

Religious Studies

This book undertakes such an analysis in two ways: first, through a critical reading of how the notion of ritual has been used in the study of religion, society, and culture; and second, through an attempt to carve out an approach to ritual activities that is less encumbered by assumptions about thinking and acting and more disclosing of the strategies by which ritualized activities do what they do. Monotheism And Tolerance: Recovering A Religion Of Reason, Robert Erlewine Dec 2009

Monotheism And Tolerance: Recovering A Religion Of Reason, Robert Erlewine

Robert Erlewine

Why are religious tolerance and pluralism so difficult to achieve? Why is the often violent fundamentalist backlash against them so potent? Robert Erlewine looks to a new religion of reason for answers to these questions. Drawing on Enlightenment writers Moses Mendelssohn, Immanuel Kant, and Hermann Cohen, who placed Christianity and Judaism in tension with tolerance and pluralism, Erlewine finds a way to break the impasse, soften hostilities, and establish equal relationships with the Other. Erlewine's recovery of a religion of reason stands in contrast both to secularist critics of religion who reject religion for the sake of reason and to …

Global Human Thriving: A Christian Perspective, Christoffer H. Grundmann Dec 2009

Global Human Thriving: A Christian Perspective, Christoffer H. Grundmann

Theology Faculty Presentations

(excerpt) "Talking about global human thriving from a decidedly religious point of view requires interpreting a particular religious tradition in light of today’s ubiquitous ecological, economic, and political challenges. One cannot any longer stay content with a monologic explanation of happenings based on an authoritarian, unilateral interpretation of holy writ and the wisdom of old, at least not according to the Christian perception of life and human responsibility, because global issues like climate change, water scarcity, and nuclear overkill—to mention only a few—indiscriminately threaten the continuation of all of life as known so far. These issues compel us to pursue …

Unity, Charity, And Fraternity: Father Michael Mcgivney And The Knights Of Columbus, Kathleen A. Bruno Dec 2009

Unity, Charity, And Fraternity: Father Michael Mcgivney And The Knights Of Columbus, Kathleen A. Bruno

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

My thesis discusses the reasons for the creation of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organization, in 1881. I discuss why Father Michael McGivney, a Catholic priest in New Haven, Connecticut, believed that the organization was necessary to prevent Catholic men from joining the "secret societies" of the nineteenth century. I also explain the present-day Knights of Columbus and how McGivney's vision is carried out today through the Order.

Religiosidad, Democracia, Laicismo, Antonio-Carlos Pereira-Menaut Dec 2009

Religiosidad, Democracia, Laicismo, Antonio-Carlos Pereira-Menaut

Antonio-Carlos Pereira-Menaut

In the discussion on religion-democracy-secularism, several Catholic authors make some mistakes. Firstly, they accept a historical «mea culpa» that is not always well founded, and they accept to discuss on State’s terms. They also indulge in «Eurocentrism», and undervalue certain factors in the conflict: the State’s «vocation of Church», Sovereignty, the displacement of politics towards what is personal and the loss of public validity of three important visions: the specific nature of politics, the basic agreement, and the general legal mass of rules and fundamental principles.
