Reconfiguring The Self: A Study Of Latifa Ben Mansour's L'Année De L'Éclipse Through Political, Psychological, And Stylistic Lenses, Jane E. Evans Dec 2007

Reconfiguring The Self: A Study Of Latifa Ben Mansour's L'Année De L'Éclipse Through Political, Psychological, And Stylistic Lenses, Jane E. Evans

Jane E. Evans

Latifa Ben Mansour's third novel, L'année de l'éclipse (Calmann-Lévy 2001), has prompted a study of the political, psychological, and stylistic elements that characterize protagonist Hayba's journey from grief to joy between November 1998 and July 1999. A new widow bereft of both her daughter and husband, Hayba must confront her most painful memories of loss in order to reconfigure her life in Paris, France, as a single, future parent. Hayba is an Algerian woman who has fled her homeland in order to escape further violence directed by Muslim religious extremists at westernized, well-educated citizens. As such, she typifies the plight …

Pitch Black, Anne M. Giangiulio

Anne M. Giangiulio

'Pitch Black' by Anthony Horton and Youme Landowne is a graphic tale I designed. Published by El Paso's Cinco Puntos Press, 'Pitch Black' was honored by the American Librarian Association as one of 2008's top ten graphic novels for young adults. The book also received a rave Kirkus review on September 15, 2008 noting its design “...and the fluid black-and-white sequential panels tell it well.” Finally, on October 7, 2008, The New York Times did a feature on the book both in print and online in its 'City Room' page: http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/10/07/rules-for-living-in-subway-tunnels/?hp Please be patient when downloading as file is 6.6 …

'In The Weave: Bhutanese Textiles And National Identity' Exhibit Logo And Panels, Anne M. Giangiulio

Anne M. Giangiulio

'In the Weave: Bhutanese Textiles and National Identity' logo and informational wall panels designed for the exhibit at the Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts. The photography used in these panels was taken by 2008 Guggenheim Fellow and New Mexico State University Professor David Taylor. I isolated and monotoned all the hand-painted Buddhist symbols used in the panels from a single shot of Taylor's taken of a Bhutanese temple wall.

Whatever Happened To Jane's Baby? Still Another Examination Of 'The Yellow Wall-Paper', Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe, Barbara Szubinska

Charlie Sweet

Despite all the critical ink spilled over Charlotte Perkins Gilman's classic story, one complex question still persists in college classroom and critical journals: what is the precise condition of the story's narrator and why is the baby presented in such a cursory manner?

Using Knowledge Surveys And Tests To Teach Literature: Do We Assess And Make Asses Of Ourselves, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Hal Blythe

Even before the end of the twentieth century, literature teachers were under a great deal of pressure to join the assessment movement, but recently the screws have been tightened, this time by the federal government through the six regional accrediting agencies.

Yick Wo Re-Revisited: Nonblack Nonwhites And Fourteenth Amendment History, Thomas W. Joo Dec 2007

Yick Wo Re-Revisited: Nonblack Nonwhites And Fourteenth Amendment History, Thomas W. Joo

Thomas W Joo

The 1886 Supreme Court case Yick Wo v. Hopkins is often viewed as a precursor of the racial civil rights era represented by Brown v. Board of Education. In fact, the case was primarily about economic rights. In a new article, Unexplainable on Grounds of Race: Doubts About Yick Wo, forthcoming in the Illinois Law Review, Professor Gabriel Chin argues that Yick Wo "is not a race case at all." I argue that it is a "race case" because the Court’s use of the Fourteenth Amendment to vindicate economic rights necessarily entangled economic rights with race--in an ultimately pernicious way. …

Jack Bauer: The Smart Warrior's Faustian Gift, Marcus O'Donnell Dec 2007

Jack Bauer: The Smart Warrior's Faustian Gift, Marcus O'Donnell

Marcus O'Donnell

Jack Bauer of the television series 24 is a highly charged contemporary mythic character who exists in powerful relationship to past and present real-world and fictional figures. If Rambo was a classic Reagan era cinematic ‘hard body’ (Jeffords, 1994), Jack is the archetypal Bush ‘smart warrior’ in a post-Patriot Act era. Like Rambo, Reagan’s displays of bravado were decisive and successfully staged; however, George Bush has faced a multiplying set of uncertainties. This sets up a more complex set of relations between Jack, George W. Bush and contemporary masculinities than those presented by the Reagan era. Jack is both an …

Kiddushin: A Service For Yom Hashoah, David M. Freidenreich

David M. Freidenreich

An original liturgy for Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) that uses the framework of the traditional Jewish wedding ceremony to explore the question, "what does the relationship between God and Israel mean in the face of the unjustifiable and irremediable suffering which Jews endured during the Shoah?"

Bilingual Teachers' Performances Of Power And Conflict, Betsy R. Rymes, Melisa Cahnmann-Taylor, Mariana Souto-Manning

Betsy Rymes

This paper describes and analyzes the use of Augusto Boal's Theater of the Oppressed (TO) as a form of academic and social support used in a recruitment and retention program for bilingual teachers in the Southeastern United States. We analyze changing epistemic stances of performers to understand how TO works to disrupt monologic relationships and reestablish dialogue between teachers and others in their professional lives.

The Search For Identity: Emergent Catholicity In The Modern Business School, Brian Schmisek, Dale Fodness, Robert Walsh Dec 2007

The Search For Identity: Emergent Catholicity In The Modern Business School, Brian Schmisek, Dale Fodness, Robert Walsh

Brian Schmisek

For the Catholic University that is not affiliated with a religious order or congregation, the Catholic identity within the business school may not be well defined. Therefore, the school is not able to answer the basic question of how the mission as Catholic per se is manifest. It leaves open important questions in regard to its curriculum, faculty and student composition, and enrollment management. For example, even with Ex Corde Ecclesiae it is difficult to answer: what is a “Catholic” business school, what precisely (other than the number of Catholics on the faculty) differentiates a Catholic business school from any …

Does Michigan Matter?, Stephen C. Angle Dec 2007

Does Michigan Matter?, Stephen C. Angle

Stephen C. Angle

When I went off to graduate school, specialists in Chinese philosophy taught in philosophy departments at four significant graduate programs: University of Michigan, University of California at Berkeley, Stanford University, and University of Hawai’i. Today, of those four programs, only Hawai’i — which in contrast to the other three, has not been viewed as a strong broad-based graduate program1 — still has specialists in Chinese philosophy. My question here is: does this matter, and if so, to whom?

No Supreme Principle: Confucianism's Harmonization Of Multiple Values, Stephen C. Angle Dec 2007

No Supreme Principle: Confucianism's Harmonization Of Multiple Values, Stephen C. Angle

Stephen C. Angle

The present symposium is a reaction to one of the most stimulating debates that the Chinese philosophical community has seen in years. The vigorous challenges mounted by LIU Qingping prompted a wide-ranging and constructive conversation that has focused in four areas: first, the historical, contextual interpretation of classical Confucian teachings, and their strengths and weaknesses in that context; second, arguments about the continuing cultural influence of these Confucian orientations; third, methodological questions about the proper way to study and develop Chinese philosophy; fourth, more substantive argument about what sort of philosophy one ought to adopt today. As both an …

A Phenomenology Of ‘The Other World’: On Irigaray’S ‘To Paint The Invisible', Helen A. Fielding Dec 2007

A Phenomenology Of ‘The Other World’: On Irigaray’S ‘To Paint The Invisible', Helen A. Fielding

Helen A Fielding

As we know, Merleau-Ponty was struggling with a dynamic shift in his thinking at the premature end of his life.  In those last notes he raises the question of how to elaborate a phenomenology of “’the other world’, as the limit of a phenomenology of the imaginary and the ‘hidden’”—a phenomenology that would open onto an invisible life, community, other and culture (VI, Jan. 1960).  In her essay on “Eye and Mind”, “To Paint the Invisible”, Luce Irigaray shows why Merleau-Ponty was not yet ready to address this question, why he was not yet ready to engage the limits of …
