Find Meaning Make Meaning, Karen Stein Dec 2008

Find Meaning Make Meaning, Karen Stein

Theses and Dissertations

Employing the designer William Morris as a source of inspiration, this project seeks to explore the call for nature and beauty as a part of our lives. Moreover, it interweaves the necessity for experience of the sensual world (the five senses) with the cerebral world (a requisite to igniting the internal imagination)—a concept embodied in the form of the book. It advocates a redefining of the book as an imagination sculpture (the external and the internal) reflecting this new definition.

The Beekeepers, Richard Robinson Dec 2008

The Beekeepers, Richard Robinson

Theses and Dissertations

The Beekeepers complements a film/digital video of the same name. It documents my process in creating alternative films/digital videos while pursuing my MFA at Virginia Commonwealth University. It starts with my first film/digital video, “Redemption,” and traces my progression over two years culminating with the 25 minute experimental documentary, “The Beekeepers

Dancescape: A Work In Thetranslation Of Bodies And Movement, Julia Allisson Cost Dec 2008

Dancescape: A Work In Thetranslation Of Bodies And Movement, Julia Allisson Cost

Scripps Senior Theses

Translation is inevitably challenging work. When the human body and its movement are the subjects translated, the work may be particularly difficult, as questions both technical and ethical may arise about the representation in the second medium. Yet the exercise can also be very illuminating, creating space for insights that may not have been possible without the translation. For my Scripps College art thesis, I have created a series of paintings of Western dancers and researched four artists whose work involves bodies, movement, or dance and whose approaches differ tremendously. These artists are Edgar Degas (1834-1917), an impressionist painter known …

A Space For Absence, Timothy Dalton Dec 2008

A Space For Absence, Timothy Dalton

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on the evolution of my work created during my two years of study at Virginia Commonwealth University. Although I touch upon my influences what I am writing is a reflection after the fact that does not necessarily encompass my original intent or inspirations for these works. I find my inspiration from personal discoveries within my daily life. Light flickering through the rails of a fence as I walk by makes me more aware of my body's movement in space. Watching the steady condensation of water droplets forming on a fountain creates a moment of pause within the …

"The Changing Book: Transitions in Design Production, and Preservation publishes the proceedings of the conference of the same name organized by and held at the University of Iowa July 22-25,2005. This conference tied together many threads, from an exhibition honoring the life's work of William (Bill) Anthony, the first conservator at the University of Iowa and teacher to some of today's best, to a "tent show" which gave the public the opportunity to learn about the book arts hands-on, to 19 formal presentations …

International Terrorism:Role ,Responsibility And Operation Of Media Channles, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr Nov 2008

International Terrorism:Role ,Responsibility And Operation Of Media Channles, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr

Ratnesh Dwivedi

"Terrorism" is a term that cannot be given a stable defintion. Or rather, it can, but to do so forstalls any attempt to examine the major feature of its relation to television in the contemporary world. As the central public arena for organising ways of picturing and talking about social and political life, TV plays a pivotal role in the contest between competing defintions, accounts and explanations of terrorism. Which term is used in any particular context is inextricably tied to judgemements about the legitimacy of the action in question and of the political system against which it is directed. …

The Open Road, Bryan Condra Nov 2008

The Open Road, Bryan Condra

Theses and Dissertations

In our journeys on the open road, we travel through a landscape of visual imagery composed of patterns, rhythms and a spectrum of changing colors. Our previous experiences, mental and physical attitudes and expectations, shape our perceptions. By visually interpreting and presenting my experiences of the journey on the open road I hoped to tell a story of how the open road energizes the creative spirit. My goal was to explore how the landscape is altered by motion and speed as we pass through it, and how the journey can be experienced in various ways. I wanted to investigate and …

Between You And Me, Thomas Micah Stansell Nov 2008

Between You And Me, Thomas Micah Stansell

Art and Design Theses

In an increasingly online world interpersonal interactions become a less integral part of our cultural make-up. The exploration of this phenomenon is the thematic concept that activates Between You and Me - a triptych-split-screen short film and video installation. This text is dedicated to exploring how theme, technique, and theory are considered in the context of the film, and how character and form (more than narrative) illuminate the thematic concept.

For Earth's Sake: Closing The Chasm Between Theory And Practice In Sustainable Interior Design Education, Jesus Mangaoang Jimenez Nov 2008

For Earth's Sake: Closing The Chasm Between Theory And Practice In Sustainable Interior Design Education, Jesus Mangaoang Jimenez

Art and Design Theses

Making sustainable interior design education practical is critical to the survival of the planet. The essential of today's interior designer is to provide built enviornments that sustain the life of a building's occupants and the life in and around the built environment. Therefore, interior design departments are interweaving the principles and theories related to sustainable interior design into their pedagogical programs. However, there exists a void between the teachings of the theories and values related to sustainable design and putting them into practice. With the possibility of climante change looming over us, interior design students must reach a significant level …

Birth And Women In Mythology, Chanju Lee Nov 2008

Birth And Women In Mythology, Chanju Lee

Art and Design Theses

The Birth is a multi-media video installation inspired by my personal experiences of a miscarriage and the births of my two children. The work is influenced by the mythologies found in Korean culture that focus on the mother figure as a ¡°Great Mother¡±. She is an ¡°ideal woman¡±, a ¡°good mother¡± and a ¡°sincere wife¡±. Working abstractly across the media of painting, video, digital animation, and the paintings of my son, The Birth exploits metaphors and symbols, to tell the story of women, especially the stories of mothers. The work speaks to motherly love and my own identity as an …

Binge, Raegan Nicole Hodge Nov 2008

Binge, Raegan Nicole Hodge

Art and Design Theses

Binge is a multi-media installation consisting of dangling IV bags looming over a large table of food. Monitors on the table show live online chats about thinness, depression and eating disorders. On the rear wall, interview footage describing the gruesome experiences of the eating disorder sufferer intercut with the newest development of the disease, the online presence. The installation confronts the viewer with the horrible dualities of the disease: discipline and madness, reason and passion, and suffering and indulgence. The work references the philosophic mind/body struggle as well as the grim reality of these afflicted young women.

Self-Crosslinked Gliadin Fibers With High Strength And Water Stability For Potential Medical Applications, Narendra Reddy, Yiqi Yang Oct 2008

Self-Crosslinked Gliadin Fibers With High Strength And Water Stability For Potential Medical Applications, Narendra Reddy, Yiqi Yang

Department of Textiles, Merchandising, and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications

For the first time, protein fibers with excellent mechanical properties and water stability have been produced from gliadin for potential use in tissue culture and other medical applications. Biomaterials developed from plant proteins such as zein and soyproteins are preferred for several medical applications over synthetic polymers such as polylactic acid. However, the plant protein based biomaterials developed so far have poor mechanical properties and hydrolytic stability even after crosslinking. This study aims to develop biomaterials from gliadin with excellent mechanical properties and water stability without using any crosslinking agents. A novel gliadin fiber production method was used to self …
