The Thrill Of Being Here: A Letter From Fortin De Las Flores, Mexico, John D. Hazlett Dec 2005

The Thrill Of Being Here: A Letter From Fortin De Las Flores, Mexico, John D. Hazlett

John D Hazlett

"The Thrill of Being Here" is an epistolary meditative essay on the desire for, and difficulties of, penetration, considered as a goal of travel, intercultural communication, and understanding of the other. Writing from a small town situated in the uplands of Veracruz, Mexico, Hazlett considers the possibility that a series of acupuncture sessions might serve as a fine metaphor for his year living and working abroad.

Emancipation Through Secularization: French Feminist Views Of Muslim Women’S Condition In Interwar Algeria, Sara L. Kimble Dec 2005

Emancipation Through Secularization: French Feminist Views Of Muslim Women’S Condition In Interwar Algeria, Sara L. Kimble

Sara L Kimble

Sententia And Structure In Tacitus Histories, Elizabeth E. Keitel Dec 2005

Sententia And Structure In Tacitus Histories, Elizabeth E. Keitel

Elizabeth E. Keitel

This paper argues that a close reading of Tacitus Histories 1.12-49 is crucial for understanding the work as a whole, since this unit of narrative functions very much as a paradigm for the account of all the phases of the civil wars in 69. Throughout this section, Tacitus uses sententiae about fundamental themes concerning fides, amicitia, and adulatio to structure his account of Galba's fall and Otho's rise and to draw attention to issues that will become increasingly important in the subsequent phases of the civil war. Certain episodes, such as Galba's speech to his newly adopted heir Piso (Histories …

Rethinking Social Realism: African American Art And Literature, 1930-1953., James E. Smethurst

James E. Smethurst

Stacy Morgan's Rethinking Social Realism is an ambitious and important study of left-wing African American expressive culture from the beginning of the Great Depression to the depths of the McCarthy Era. Its largely successful efforts to think across boundaries of genre, medium, and intellectual discipline make it among the most impressive studies of African American art and the Communist Left to date.

Language And Culture (Spring 2006 Syllabus), Adam Hodges Dec 2005

Language And Culture (Spring 2006 Syllabus), Adam Hodges

Adam Hodges

Language is a primary cultural tool used in all human societies. Through the use of language, we interact socially, interpret our surroundings, set up relations and establish shared meanings. Language use creates public space and places items into that space for consideration. In short, there is no such thing as non-social language; language itself is fundamentally a social activity integrally linked with cultural systems and social practice. In this course, we will examine this intersection of language and culture in an effort to understand how language and culture derive from, shape, and influence each other.

Questions we will consider include …

Review Of Frisina: The Unity Of Knowledge And Action, Stephen C. Angle Dec 2005

Review Of Frisina: The Unity Of Knowledge And Action, Stephen C. Angle

Stephen C. Angle

Readers of this journal will find Warren G. Frisina’s The Unity of Knowledge and Action fresh and exciting for at least two reasons. First, it is an exemplary foray in global philosophy — that is, philosophy undertaken with an openness to the perspectives and contributions of philosophical traditions from around the globe. It goes beyond simple comparisons to engage in cross-cultural philosophical construction. Indeed, Frisina writes that “the very idea for this book was inspired by the philosophy underlying the Neo-Confucian scholar Wang Yangming’s famous slogan zhi xing he yi (the unity of knowledge and action)” [4].ii Second, the …
