Mapping a collection

A collection is never fixed, and any identifiable collection is greater than the sum of its parts. As Susan Stewart comments: "while we can 'see' the entire collection, we cannot possibly 'see' each of its elements." (On Longing: Narratives of the Miniat ure, the Gigantic, the Souvenir, the Collection, Baltimore and London: John Hopkins University Press, 1984, p.152). The Otago Polytechnic School of Art collection database lists 836 items, but this is not a complete record. There are other works that have perhaps fallen t hrough crilcks, while some works listed in the database may even dispute …

Meaningful Work: Rethinking Professional Ethics, Mike W. Martin Jan 2000

Meaningful Work: Rethinking Professional Ethics, Mike W. Martin

Philosophy Faculty Books and Book Chapters

As commonly understood, professional ethics consists of shared duties and episodic dilemmas--the responsibilities incumbent on all members of specific professions joined together with the dilemmas that arise when these responsibilities conflict. Martin challenges this "consensus paradigm" as he rethinks professional ethics to include personal commitments and ideals, of which many are not mandatory. Using specific examples from a wide range of professions, including medicine, law, high school teaching, journalism, engineering, and ministry, he explores how personal commitments motivate, guide, and give meaning to work.

Application Of Computer-Based Technology To The Teaching Of Writing In Spanish As A Foreign Language: A Case Study, Nuria Gago Jan 2000

Application Of Computer-Based Technology To The Teaching Of Writing In Spanish As A Foreign Language: A Case Study, Nuria Gago

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Computers are becoming more and more important in today's world. They are part of every sector of our society, including education. Most of the studies done so far on computer integration with educational purposes focus on the classification, and incorporation, from a theoretical point of view, of Computer Mediated Communication in the class. Unfortunately, very little empirical research has been done concerning the students' perspectives and reactions when introduced to the use of multimedia technology in the classroom. The present project was started in an effort to analyze and observer the reactions of a group of learners when exposed, in …

Come-Outers And Community Men: Abraham Lincoln And The Idea Of Community In Nineteenth-Century America, Allen C. Guelzo Jan 2000

Come-Outers And Community Men: Abraham Lincoln And The Idea Of Community In Nineteenth-Century America, Allen C. Guelzo

Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications

The most eloquent and moving words Abraham Lincoln ever uttered about any community were those "few and simple words" he spoke on the rear platform of the railroad car that lay waiting on the morning of February 11, 1861, to take him to Washington, to the presidency, and ultimately to his death. As his "own breast heaved with emotion" so that "he could scarcely command his feelings sufficiently to commence" (in the description of James C. Conkling), Lincoln declared that "No one, not in my situation, can appreciate my feeling of sadness at this parting." To leave Springfield was to …

Journeys: The Interpretation Of Modern Myth Through Art, Karen V. Dick Jan 2000

Journeys: The Interpretation Of Modern Myth Through Art, Karen V. Dick

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

"Journeys" primarily investigates the interpretation of one form of expression to another; i.e., the visual interpretation of myth through an in terms of the contemporary individual's psychological voyage. The basis for this study comes from the writings of noted scholar Joseph Campbell and others who place myth in the position of the inward, not the outward journey in the quest for human discovery. As Bill Moyers so eloquently states in The Power of Myth. "myths are the stories of our search through the ages for truth, for meaning, for significance. We all need to tell our story and to understand …

The Angle

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"It's blue today, an October blue. The wind is howling behind me, chasing me, pushing me away. It doesn't want me or need me anymore; it's ready to become itself. One, not two together, separate—single. The October wind has harvested itself deep within me and over the lost summer nights that we shared together. We shared our senses, memories, tastes, time, laughter, and pleasures."

How Do We Keep Desire From Passing With Beauty?, Pamela L. Caughie Jan 2000

How Do We Keep Desire From Passing With Beauty?, Pamela L. Caughie

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

On the day of her party in June 1923, Clarissa Dalloway worries about her attraction to beauty in the face of a political and humanitarian crisis:

He [Richard] was already halfway to the House of Commons, to his Armenians, his Albanians, having settled her on the sofa, looking at his roses. And people would say, “Clarissa Dalloway is spoilt.” She cared much more for her roses than for the Armenians. Hunted out of existence, maimed, frozen, the victims of cruelty and injustice (she had heard Richard say so over and over again)—no, she could feel nothing for the Albanians, or …

Integrating Spiritual Perspectives With The Law School Experience: An Essay And Invitation, Lucia A. Silecchia Jan 2000

Integrating Spiritual Perspectives With The Law School Experience: An Essay And Invitation, Lucia A. Silecchia

Scholarly Articles

Reports of burn-out, disillusionment, and stress abound in modern literature as the legal profession faces a period of rapid change and sobering self-reflection on the ways in which it should operate as an honorable and noble profession.

In a seemingly unrelated development, there is a steadily growing interest in the spirituality of modern professional life. As those in other fields have also grappled with both outward critique and inward self-reflection, the past several years have seen a renewed interest in the spiritual aspects of worldly occupations. As time goes on and interest in spirituality and professional life increases, the legal …

The 1960 Presidential Election In Florida: Did The Space Race And The National Prestige Issue Play An Important Role?, Randy Wade Babish

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The landmark launch of Sputnik on October 4, 1957, and the subsequent perception that the United States trailed the Soviet Union, not only in space but also in missiles, plagued the Eisenhower Administration for the rest of the decade. The Democratic Party strategy for the 1960 presidential election included using the space race, the alleged missile gap, and declining American prestige abroad to illustrate the need for new leadership in the White House. Senator John F. Kennedy, the Democratic nominee, effectively raised these issues throughout the general election to support his "New Frontier" program and won by the narrowest popular …

Writing A Novella, Keri A. Phillips Jan 2000

Writing A Novella, Keri A. Phillips

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

The novella Spaces Off takes place during the months of August through November of 1990 in Estes Park, Colorado. It is about Lily, a fourteen-year-old girl, who is trying to find acceptance and identity in the midst of various familial and social crises occurring all at once. The crises feed off each other, creating a tense environment from which Lily only manages to escape by cooking, cleaning, organizing, and trying to make things "right" in the ways she can. While this is going on Roger (military-minded, basketball coach Dad), Rose (high-strung, estranged older sister), Sandy (Dad's chain-smoking, well-meaning girlfriend), and …
