A Late Antique Ivory Plaque And Modern Response, Dale Kinney, Anthony Cutler Jan 1994

A Late Antique Ivory Plaque And Modern Response, Dale Kinney, Anthony Cutler

History of Art Faculty Research and Scholarship

A recently published challenge to the authenticity of the ivory plaque of the Symmachi, now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, is refuted, and its late fourth-century origin is confirmed by comparison with other plaques whose fourth- or fifth-century date is secure. The charge of forgery is related to patterns in recent art historiography, and these are traced to an anachronistic critical vocabulary that entails inappropriate norms of illusionistic depiction. A different vocabulary is proposed, based on a reexamination of the plaque's visible structure and of its artistic sources.

A pendant note by Anthony Cutler scrutinizes the fabric of the …

A Rethinking Of The Social Gospel And Its Implications For The Church In Modern America, Kyle M. Wiggins Jan 1994

A Rethinking Of The Social Gospel And Its Implications For The Church In Modern America, Kyle M. Wiggins

Honors Theses

The Church in America is at a turning point in her history. This author believes, like Rauschenbusch, that the future health of the Church in the United States depends primarily on how it responds to the growing sense of class consciousness in the United States, the dichotomy between "them" and "us," the "poor and lazy" and the "thrifty and productive."

Churches are responding in a number of ways. Political conservative churches have chosen to limit their focus to a few scattered social causes, namely abortion, homosexuals, and prayer in schools. They generally take the traditional position that the United States …

Pictures On Stone: American Color Lithography, Daphne A. Deeds Jan 1994

Pictures On Stone: American Color Lithography, Daphne A. Deeds

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

Art is often defined as the mirror of society. Chromolithography fulfills that defmition because it was invented in response to the changing demographics of post -Civil War America. During the period 1860-1900 a variety of social changes transformed America from a small agrarian society to a giant industrial nation poised on the brink of joining the modem international world. Many aspects of American life were imbued with an egalitarian spirit. The new democracy was especially evident in the reformed educational system. For the first time in U.S. history, public schools were mandated for all U.S. children, and land-grant universities (including …

Une Analyse Des Perspectives Feministes Dans L'Oeuvre De Benoite Groult (1975-1993), Charlotte Joanne Casey Jan 1994

Une Analyse Des Perspectives Feministes Dans L'Oeuvre De Benoite Groult (1975-1993), Charlotte Joanne Casey

Theses : Honours

The work by French author Benoite Groult (1920- ) is an expression of personal discontent. Biographer Fernando Goutier (1978, p. 98) points out that from 1968 to 1975 an increasingly acute awareness of the political and economic situation of Women compelled Groult to write Ainsi soit-elle (1975). Ainsi soit-elle is the point of departure for our study of feminist perspectives in Benoite Groult's writing. The purpose of this research project is to explore the possibilities, and the validity, of a feminist reading of a selection of essays and novels produced by Groult between 1975 and 1993. Included in this selection …

Religious Orientation, Persuasion, And Communicator Style, E. James Baesler Jan 1994

Religious Orientation, Persuasion, And Communicator Style, E. James Baesler

Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications

Using a functional approach to religion as an explanatory framework, this essay argues that a quest religious orientation is associated with particular communicator styles and with religious persuasion. The research positively associates quest religious orientation with susceptibility to religious persuasion and negatively associates it with the religious need to persuade others. The results do not generally support the relationship between a quest religious orientation and communicator styles, but the study finds partial support for the relationship between a quest religious orientation and an attentive communicator style.

The Prevalence Of Social Science In Gay Rights Cases: The Synergistic Influences Of Historical Context, Justificatory Citation, And Dissemination Efforts, Patricia J. Falk Jan 1994

The Prevalence Of Social Science In Gay Rights Cases: The Synergistic Influences Of Historical Context, Justificatory Citation, And Dissemination Efforts, Patricia J. Falk

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

Disjunctive legal change is often accompanied by a period of frantic activity as the competing forces of stasis and evolution vie for domination. Nowhere is the battle for legal change likely to be more sharply joined than when the findings of modern science, in their varied and multifarious forms, are pitted directly against prevailing moral or societal precepts. One of the latest incarnations of this trend is the battle over the legal recognition of gay "rights." In recent history, the courts have been inundated by gay litigants seeking the rights and protections already afforded other discrete groups within society. In …

Law And Philosophy, Philosophy And Law, Francis J. Mootz Iii Jan 1994

Law And Philosophy, Philosophy And Law, Francis J. Mootz Iii

Scholarly Works

A roundtable discussion about the relevance of contemporary hermeneutical philosophy for legal theory raises a foundational question often neglected in interdisciplinary articles: What is the relationship between law and philosophy? The burgeoning scholarship drawing connections between legal theory and philosophy increasingly has come under attack for displaying a naive view about the potential legitimate exchanges between philosophers and legal academics. I have written elsewhere at length about the important insights that philosophical hermeneutics can lend to jurisprudential discussions of the rule of law. In this essay, I develop my argument by stepping back and attending more generally to the connections …

Reflections On Religious Pluralism In The Indian Context, Margaret Chatterjee Jan 1994

Reflections On Religious Pluralism In The Indian Context, Margaret Chatterjee

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Does pluralism in aesthetic and religious judgements necessarily lead to relativism? The writer takes the view that (a) religious pluralism does not only reveal itself in diversity of judgements but in other diversities as well; (b) such diversities suggest relativity rather than relativism. The pluralities invite not aggregation or toleration so much as understanding.

Viewpoint: Religious Fundamentalism And Pluralism In India, David C. Scott Jan 1994

Viewpoint: Religious Fundamentalism And Pluralism In India, David C. Scott

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Much has been written and said in recent months about religious fundamentalism and pluralism in India. However, in order to understand what is currently going on in India with regard to these two phenomena, a third really needs to be brought into the picture -- communalism. Indeed, one could well argue, though I have neither the time nor the space here, that the fundamentalisms of India -- whether Muslim, Sikh, Hindu, Buddhist, or Christian -- were conceived in communally perceived times of crisis. Basically fundamentalist movements in India are critiques of contemporary ways of life and look to a future, …

Hindu-Christian Dialogue In The Making In Australia, Purushottama Bilimoria Jan 1994

Hindu-Christian Dialogue In The Making In Australia, Purushottama Bilimoria

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

It would not be an exaggeration to say at the outset that Hindu-Christian dialogue is still in its infancy in Australia when compared, for instance, to Buddhist-Christian, Jewish-Christian, Muslim-Christian, and even Muslim-Jewish dialogue. However, there have been some developments in recent times and there is something of a history, albeit discontinuous, of Hindu-Christian encounters in Australia.

Hindu-Christian Studies As A Necessary Luxury In The Context Of Today's Pluralism, Francis Clooney Jan 1994

Hindu-Christian Studies As A Necessary Luxury In The Context Of Today's Pluralism, Francis Clooney

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

During 1992-3 I had the good fortune to live in Madras and spend the year reading both Tiruvaymoli, the Tamil religious classic composed by Satakopan of Kurukur, and also large sections of the early commentaries on it, particularly the great Itu of Nampillai. For the purpose of this study I met regularly with several learned teachers of the Srivaisnava tradition, with one of them for about two hours a day. Though I had studied these texts on and off during the previous ten years, this period of prolonged and intense study immeasurably deepened my knowledge of the texts. The …
