Orlando Gets Hockey But Not Nhl Hockey, Richard C. Crepeau
Orlando Gets Hockey But Not Nhl Hockey, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
When the announcement came a little over a week ago The Orlando Sentinel fell over itself like the lapdog it has become for the Orlando Magic and the DeVoss family. It was of course the major news that Orlando was about to get a hockey team in the International Hockey League, and the city was about to facilitate the process with another sweetheart contract with the family DeVoss for use of the O-Arena.

It is Christmas time and this year I want to recommend four major photo and essay collections on sport that have been published in the last two years, each of which would make a very special Christmas gift. Prices range from $25 to $75 varying by book and place of purchase.

The City of Orlando and designated majority owner Norton Herrick are scheduled to make their presentation of Orlando's case for major league baseball on Wednesday of next week. So it might be a good time to make an assessment of Orlando's chances for getting a team.

Monday Night Football's 25th Anniversary, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
It is the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary of Monday Night Football. The other networks laughed when ABC announced it was going to take NFL football into prime time. Who would watch? By Monday everyone was suffering from football burnout what with the College games on Saturday, and the double network double headers on Sunday. It just wouldn't work.

How long has it been now? Two months. Three months. Does anyone remember exactly when the baseball strike began? For the record it was August 12, 1994, some three months and a week ago. Cheeseburgers. Ben Gay. Maalox. The George Foreman Trinity. On Saturday Night November 5, 1994, George Foreman at age 45 won the Heavyweight Championship of the World. Was it a blow against ageism? Racial Barriers To African American Entrepreneurship: An Exploratory Study, Joe E. Feagin, Nikitah Imani
Racial Barriers To African American Entrepreneurship: An Exploratory Study, Joe E. Feagin, Nikitah Imani
Black Studies Faculty Publications
Much has been written in the ethnic entrepreneurship literature about the contrasting business performance of African American entrepreneurs and those from other minority and immigrant groups. Yet very little research has been conducted by social scientists on the business experiences of black entrepreneurs. In this exploratory study we examine the situation of black contractors in the U.S. construction industry, utilizing 76 in-depth interviews in one of the South's metropolitan areas. We document the nuanced character of the racial barriers faced by black contractors in several areas of the construction industry. We find racial discrimination in unions, in white general contractors' …

Leadership With A Purpose (Boston), C. William Pollard
C. William Pollard Papers
Speaking at Gordon College (Boston), Pollard notes that in light of a changing socio-economic landscape, it is all the more important that Christians consider the marketplace to be a place of potential ministry. In this way, business leadership becomes leadership with a purpose, namely that of honoring God and serving others.

No World Series: Revisit 1991, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
This should have been the week that the 1994 World Series came to an end. Instead we can all read on a daily basis that the only baseball action is off the field with general managers and managers being fired and hired, players released, and the two sides in the labor dispute seldom even meeting with one another.
