Role Models And Mentors For Blacks At Predominantly White Campuses, Clarence G. Williams
Trotter Review
Educators must begin to revisit the topic of mentoring and role models in higher education, especially as it relates to blacks at predominantly white college campuses. There are two major facets of this topic; namely, the existence of role models and mentors for young black administrators, faculty members, and students at predominantly white campuses; and, the objectives and goals of providing role models and mentors for these individuals.

Discovering The Chichimecas, Charlotte M. Gradie
Discovering The Chichimecas, Charlotte M. Gradie
History Faculty Publications
The European practice of conceptualizing their enemies so that they could dispose of them in ways that were not in accord with their own Christian principles is well documented. In the Americas, this began with Columbus's designation of certain Indians as man-eaters and was continued by those Spanish who also wished to enslave the natives or eliminate them altogether. The word “cannibal” was invented to describe such people, and the Spanish were legally free to treat cannibals in ways that were forbidden to them in their relations with other people. By the late fifteenth century the word cannibal had assumed …
A Literary Evaluation Of Black Female Interaction In Toni Morrison's "Beloved", "Sula," "Jazz", Carol Ann Davenport
A Literary Evaluation Of Black Female Interaction In Toni Morrison's "Beloved", "Sula," "Jazz", Carol Ann Davenport
English Theses & Dissertations
This Master's thesis consists of three chapters that examine the roles, circumstances and effects of racism and sexism on the black female characters in three of Toni Morrison's novels, Beloved, Sula and Jazz. I propose that the elements of racism and sexism have left the female characters, Sethe, Denver, Ella, etc. in Beloved with few choices in life. Further, I suggest that the theme of "choice versus no choice" perpetuates hatred and self-hatred among black women and results in "metaphoric scarring." I explore in the characters, Sula, Eva, Hannah, Nel, and the black Bottom women, the damage inflicted on black …

Teaching African-American Children: The Legacy Of Slavery, Harold Horton
Teaching African-American Children: The Legacy Of Slavery, Harold Horton
New England Journal of Public Policy
The pathetic state of urban public school education offered to African-American children stems from slavery, when it was against the law to educate slaves, who were regarded as chattel. This article traces the history of the blighting of their minds by stripping those slaves of their African culture, and its effect on African-American children, as well as other children of color, today. Horton offers suggestions for coping with the problems of modern schools as related to respecting and teaching these children, pointing out that the system is the problem, not the children.

Duncan Energy V. Three Affiliated Tribes (1994), United States Court Of Appeals, Eighth Circuit
US Government Documents related to Indigenous Nations
This court case, decided on June 8, 1994, was the result of an appeal of an earlier decision made on September 28, 1992. This suit was initially filed by Duncan Energy (and others) who were operating oil and gas wells in the northeast quadrant of the Fort Berthold Reservation. They contended that the northeast quadrant of land was not part of the Reservation per the act of 1910 and as such they were not subject to taxation and employment ordinances set by the Three Affiliated Tribes. The 1992 ruling found that act of 1910 did not diminish the Reservation and …
Eastern Abenaki Autonomy And French Frustrations, 1745-1760, David L. Ghere
Eastern Abenaki Autonomy And French Frustrations, 1745-1760, David L. Ghere
Maine History
Most Abenaki Indians became French allies between 1745 and 1760, but in effect it was English policy that ultimately drove them into this alliance. While the Western Abenakis were generally reliable allies, French officials were repeatedly frustrated by their limited influence over the Eastern Abenakis and by the restrained reaction of these Indians to English provocations. Eastern Abenakis became reluctant French allies.

Grandmother, Daughter, Princess, Squaw: Native American Female Stereotypes In Historical Perspective, Pauleena M. Macdougall
Grandmother, Daughter, Princess, Squaw: Native American Female Stereotypes In Historical Perspective, Pauleena M. Macdougall
Maine History
One consequence of the English-Algonquin interaction was the development of certain female stereotypes. The Algonquin language term for female evolved into the English word “squaw” and assumed new meaning as it was applied to all Native American women. Similarly, the daughter of a tribal leader; married to a British man, acquired the attributes of European royalty, becoming a “princess. ”
The Personal And The Political In The Work Of Mariama Bâ, Adele King
The Personal And The Political In The Work Of Mariama Bâ, Adele King
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
In her two novels, Une si longue lettre and Un Chant écarlate, Mariama Bâ describes how political as well as domestic problems develop from the tensions between tradition and the modern world. Desire for power and money leads to a post-independence society, in which greed motivates politicians and in which a woman is treated as merchandise to be purchased by the richest man. Adherence to a supposed ideal pre-colonial community, however, can lead to both the subjugation of women and political isolation. Bâ wants a morality based on respect for others, and a willingness to discard those traditions that …

The Need And Justifcation For All-Black Male Academies In Urban Areas, Nimrod Malik Shabazz
The Need And Justifcation For All-Black Male Academies In Urban Areas, Nimrod Malik Shabazz
McCabe Thesis Collection
During the 1980's, the concept of an all-Black male academy was strongly pushed as a panacea for the seemingly systematic, scholastic downfall of Black males in secondary institutions. Though said academies have received strong community support, opposition against them has also been equally staunch. All-Black male academies have also fallen under question because of their supposed discrimination against females and the belief that their existence would return the system of education in the United States to segregation.
The purpose of this study is to analyze historical factors which have affected Black male academic achievement on the secondary level in urban …
An Historical Look At The Negro Baseball Leagues: The Legend Of The Black Knights, Terry Pierce
An Historical Look At The Negro Baseball Leagues: The Legend Of The Black Knights, Terry Pierce
McCabe Thesis Collection
This study hopes to fill in some of the gaps in the history of the Negro Leagues. More importantly though, this research is successful only if the readers can come away with a true sense of what the ballplayers of the era felt and why they played while enduring racism and humiliation.
This study was conducted to pull together the previously written facts and history of the Negro Leagues with obscure oral history and data found through interviews, videotapes, articles, and books from and about those who played and lived during the era.
Integration Within Desegrated School Systems: Guthrie High School, A Case Study, Eric A. Moore
Integration Within Desegrated School Systems: Guthrie High School, A Case Study, Eric A. Moore
McCabe Thesis Collection
Integration within desegregated school systems is a topic that, according to several authors and professors, can be "counted on with two hands." This is an exaggeration; however, recent literature in this area is lacking. There have been several federally funded case studies, but all of the case studies have apparently been confined to urban settings. This thesis is unique in that it focuses upon the Guthrie, Oklahoma, 6 public high school system. Unlike many larger urban areas, this high school does not experience major problems such as busing, "white flight," the inability to find teachers with the resolve to teach …

From Italy To Boston's North End: Italian Immigration And Settlement, 1890-1910, Stephen Puleo
From Italy To Boston's North End: Italian Immigration And Settlement, 1890-1910, Stephen Puleo
Graduate Masters Theses
More than four million Italian immigrants entered the United States between 1880 and 1920, a number greater than any other ethnic group during America's peak immigration years. From 1900 to 1910 alone, more than two million Italians flowed through American ports. This thesis examines the great Italian migration to and settlement in the United States, focusing on one of America's strongest and most vibrant ethnic communities, Boston’s Italian North End.
The vast majority of Italian immigrants were peasants from agrarian Southern Italy, seeking refuge in America from nearly unbearable conditions in their homeland. They were mostly young, usually poor and …
