The article reports on social change in China. The transition from a centrally planned economy to a free market has set off an economic explosion and generated tremendous prosperity. According to the author, there are no signs of political liberalization in China and the power of the National People's Congress has increased significantly. The article discusses widespread corruption in China and the gulf between the prosperity of urban centers and the poverty of rural areas.

Although diversity in hospitality management benefits from business open-door policies and managerial development programs, it will be necessary for educational programs to go well beyond their traditional recruitment and retention programs to help minorities pursue opportunities in the hospitality field. This article reviews minority participation in the field and proposes some strategies for success.

This conference was dedicated to Gwendolyn Brooks because of her prophetic, poetic voice that is urgent, unashamed, graceful, redeeming, and radical, a voice that tells us even amid the loneliness and the fears of contemporary life that we must live and conduct our blooming "in the noise and whip of the whirlwind." Dr. Joanne Braxton was among more than 30 major poets and critics to present at the 1994 Furious Flower Conference at James Madison University, celebrating over 40 years the furious flowering of black poetry.
