Faculty Projects
The Motsuenyane Commission of Inquiry was appointed by the President of the African National Congress of South Africa (ANC), Dr. Nelson Mandela, to investigate allegations of human rights abuses and alleged disappearances among its members. Its terms of reference were dated the 12th January, 1993. This is a historic event insofar as it is the first time that a liberation movement has engaged an independent commission to review allegations that its members violated human rights guarantees within its ranks.
University Of Tennessee Media Day, Richard C. Crepeau
University Of Tennessee Media Day, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
While on vacation in the mountains of North Carolina adjacent to the mountains of Tennessee, I had the great privilege to see reports on the local TV stations of media day at the University of Tennessee. The interest of the media was not directed at the president of the university, or the unveiling of some new piece of technology or super computer, but rather it was media day for Big Orange football. All the solemnity usually reserved for religious exercises or the reporting of international diplomacy was dragged out for this occasion. I was struck particularly by the seriousness of …

Winthrop University Oral History Program
Ann Hunter “Annie” Popkin (1945-) is a women’s rights activist, professor of women’s studies, and accomplished author who was active during the Radical 1960s. She is also a white woman, so this interview shows both sexism and racial tensions within the movement. In this interview, Popkin discussing her early life as an activist, including her childhood interest in disparities between neighborhoods, being a Beatnik, attending the March on Washington, and handling her progressive ideals and the conformist ideals taught during the 1950s. Pack Of Lies, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance
1993 Summer Theatre
Based on a true story, the plot centers on Bob and Barbara Jackson (in real life Bill and Ruth Search) and their teenage daughter Julie (in real life Gay Search, later a television reporter and newspaper journalist in the UK.) The Jacksons are friendly with their neighbors, Peter and Helen Kroger, until the couple is arrested and charged with espionage in 1961. It is revealed the Krogers actually are Morris and Lona Cohen, who during the 1950s and 1960s worked with fellow spy Gordon Lonsdale photographing and encoding as microdots various pieces of material which they then sent to their …

Sport, Entertainment And Gender Equity, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Just over a week ago The Orlando Sentinel ran a series of three articles dealing with the issue of gender equity in intercollegiate athletics. For those not intimately involved with college athletics this is the hot topic currently rattling across campuses nationwide. Football coaches quake at the prospect of reduced scholarships and budgets, and curse the "extremists" from the women's movement who are threatening their opulent empires.
