Second Thoughts On Rossetti: Tennyson’S Revised Letter Of October 12, 1882, Terry L. Meyers
Arts & Sciences Articles
"Although Cecil Y. Lang and Edgar F. Shannon, Jr. include in The Letters of Alfred Lord Tennyson the incomplete draft of a letter Tennyson prepared to send William Sharp (1855-1905), the writer, poet, and friend and biographer of D. G. Rossetti, they overlook a printing of the letter as actually sent, after Tennyson revised it significantly..."

Two Poems By Swinburne: ‘Milton’ And On Wagner’S Music, Terry L. Meyers
Arts & Sciences Articles
"In working on an edition of Swinburne's correspondence, I have in the last several years discovered two previously unknown poems by Algernon Charles Swinburne. One has existed for decades in the British Library's Ashley Collection, unrecognized probably because it survives in the form of a copy not in Swinburne's hand. The other, a signed holograph which I bought from a bookseller in Texas, has a provenance that is unknown. Swinburne appears to have wanted to publish both, though circumstances in each case made that infeasible..."

Swinburne Shapes His Grand Passion: A Version By ‘Ashford Owen.’, Terry L. Meyers
Arts & Sciences Articles
"That a blighted love lies at the heart of many of Swinburne's works has long impelled scholars and biographers to search for details as to the who, the where, and the when of the affair. The first candidate was nomi- nated by Edmund Gosse and Thomas James Wise and was supposed to be a young miss, a Jane "Boo" Faulkner. Her candidacy, however, withered under the scrutiny of John Mayfield and Cecil Y. Lang, and a substitute was found: the poet's first cousin Mary Charlotte Julia Gordon Leith (1840-1926), a writer who married a military man, Col. Robert William Disney …

R C Scott: A History Of African-American Entrepreneurship In Richmond, 1890-1940, Michael A. Plater
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This study examines the socioeconomic aspects of ethnicity as a way to understand African-American entrepreneurship in the early twentieth century. In an attempt to separate the influence of ethnicity from the social and environmental elements that restrained many African-American entrepreneurs, the study focuses on the African-American funeral industry. The funeral industry provides a rare example of an industry that successfully operated on a voluntarily segregated basis. Sheltered from discrimination and racism, African-American funeral directors not only survived and surpassed their white counterparts, but also organized a national fraternity of economic and political elite who wielded significant power in the United …

Comprehension Of Miranda Rights By 14-18 Year Old African-American And Caucasian Males With And Without Learning Disabilities, Barbara Anne Zaremba
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
According to a nationwide study completed by the National Center for State Courts in 1980, apprehended juveniles are usually notified of their Miranda rights at various times from the point of contact with the police through and including the adjudicatory hearing. If the juvenile desires to relinquish those rights, he/she is required to sign a document attesting to his/her understanding of and wish to waive those rights. This descretionery privilege places the juvenile on the same Constitutional footing as an adult.;The purpose of this study was to examine the comprehension of Miranda rights by a sample population of juveniles within …

Selected Family Therapy Outcomes With Bowen, Haley, And Satir, Joan Elizabeth Winter
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of this study was to investigate three models of family therapy: Bowen Theory, Haley's Strategic Family Therapy, and the Satir Process Model. The question that was explored concerned what family therapy approaches achieve what types of engagement, dropout, completion, satisfaction with treatment, locus of control, and family functioning outcomes with what kinds of delinquent families. Further, what effect do traditional court services have on a similar sample of delinquent youths and their families.;A non-equivalent, quasi-experimental design with pre and posttest treated (n = 188) and comparison (n = 61) groups was employed. Independent variables included the treatment interventions …

A large agency of the Federal Government, three public institutions of higher learning, and two agents of State Government in the Commonwealth of Virginia launched a federally funded research and education consortium in 1962. The Virginia Associated Research Center (VARC) promised great success. The University of Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and The College of William and Mary joined forces to provide the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Langley Research Center with a scientific research base and a graduate education program. The Commonwealth initially provided enthusiastic support from the Governor's office and from the State Council for Higher Education.;The three colleges …
