Diakhité: A Study Of The Beads From An 18th-19th-Century Burial Site In Senegal, West Africa, Marie-José Opper, Howard Opper

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

It is the intention of this paper to place the Diakhité beads into a historical and archaeological perspective, and by so doing examine a period in Senegambian history that roughly extends from the 18th century to around the middle of the 19th century. The beads serve as a focal point to describe the trade that brought them from Europe and elsewhere to Senegambia. They also help portray some aspects of the lives of a particular ethnic group which inhabited the Thies area during this period- the Serer Nones.

High Art, Folk Art, And Other Social Distinctions, Gary Shapiro Jan 1989

High Art, Folk Art, And Other Social Distinctions, Gary Shapiro

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Most discussions of the arts by critics and philosophers could be characterized in terms of a rather studied neglect of folk and popular art. This neglect is hardly absolute, however, for it is important in order to articulate a specific conception of aesthetic taste, beauty, or style to contrast the standard being used or praised with some other, less desirable, even degraded way of producing or appreciating something similar. It is perhaps more than a historical coincidence that the formation of the modern concept of taste and aesthetic judgment, in the eighteenth century, coincides roughly with the discovery and valorization …

Khirbet Nisya 1979-1986: A Report On Six Seasons Of Excavation, David Palmer Livingston Jan 1989

Khirbet Nisya 1979-1986: A Report On Six Seasons Of Excavation, David Palmer Livingston

Dissertations

Problem. This project was an investigation of Khirbet Nisya (near Ramallah/El-Bireh) for six seasons to describe and interpret the excavation evidence. The excavation and analyses of finds were correlated with biblical data to help clarify certain problems relating to the Israelite settlement in the hill country of Palestine.

Method. Preliminary studies in the literature were made to determine the proper biblical, geographical, and topographical relationships of the traditional sites for both Bethel and Ai at Beitin and Et-Tell. The archaeological results from both sites were reviewed as to their fit with the biblical data. Patristic evidence was also considered in …

The Inscriptions Of Assurnasirpal Ii And His Son, Tammi J. Schneider Jan 1989

The Inscriptions Of Assurnasirpal Ii And His Son, Tammi J. Schneider

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

The existence of written records at a site is viewed with great joy because texts impart information that cannot be gleaned from other material remains. When no such texts are found, the archaeologists and other associated scholars must work that much harder to understand what happened at the site. One way this is done is by analyzing the remains of the site in light of other contemporary information, as has been done for Hasanlu in this issue. Contemporary sites of Assyria have produced historical texts recounting the activities of the Assryian kings that not only shed light on the period …

Apocalypse And Fortune - Digest, Lila M. Held Jan 1989

Apocalypse And Fortune - Digest, Lila M. Held

Theses

The premise upon which this study is based is that German Expressionist art has undergone an expansion in marketability, and aesthetic recognition during the past decade. German Expressionism is defined as an art of protest, an art that expressed its fundamental precepts visually through distortion, brutal images, and the emotive use of color and form.

I chose to use Ludwig Meidner to exemplify the characteristics of the movement. The basic tenets of Expressionism are apparent in both Meidner's visual and literary endeavors. Ten years ago, this artist's name and work were obscure. Today, his art appears in galleries, his name …

An Exhibition Of Recent Work By Robert Colescott, Susanne K. Arnold

Theses and Dissertations

My thesis project involved organizing, curating, designing and mounting a temporary traveling exhibition of recent work by Robert Colescott, a nationally-known black American artist. The Eye of the Beholder: Recent Work by Robert Colescott was installed at the Marsh Gallery of the University of Richmond September 7-28, 1988. It included 12 large-scale acrylic paintings on canvas and four framed drawings completed since 1981. Colescott's figurative paintings are known for their satirical commentary on society in America and on the history of Western art.
