The History Of The Baptists Of Tennessee, Lawrence Edwards Jun 1941

The History Of The Baptists Of Tennessee, Lawrence Edwards

Masters Theses

Conclusion: The Primitive Baptists, as stated in the foreword, are a controversial people. They have lived up to that description in East Tennessee. They are, as we have seen, divided now into many small bands, called after the names of their various leaders, holding or not holding to this, that or the other in such a way as to brand them as 'secret order' Baptists, 'bar' Baptists, 'soft side,' 'hard side,' 'Two-Seeders,' and 'Progressives.'

How much longer they will be able to maintain their identity as a people holding distinctive doctrinal views following certain rules of practice and decorum …

A History Of Legal Education In Tennessee, Clyde Conley Street Jun 1941

A History Of Legal Education In Tennessee, Clyde Conley Street

Masters Theses

(From the Foreword)

In the past much criticism has been directed against Tennessee for her backwardness in legal education standards; and perhaps, frequently with no little justification. It is believed that this work will indicate that legal education and standards have shown marked progress over the past few decades.

Little has been done on the history of Jurisprudence in Tennessee. The author has attempted to collect and organize certain data in the field of legal education that would show the evolution of standards of preparation for admission to the Bar. He has made general comparison of early Tennessee lawyers …

Some Phases Of The Economic Policy Of The Confederation Congress, 1781-1785, Horace Bernard Smith Jun 1938

Some Phases Of The Economic Policy Of The Confederation Congress, 1781-1785, Horace Bernard Smith

Masters Theses

The story of the efforts of the Confederation Congress to direct the steps of the "Babe of the Revolution" during the critical period of its early infancy is somewhat like the story of the mother who knows what the sick child in her arms needs to effect his recovery but is powerless to obtain the remedy. Long before the meeting of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, many leaders in Congress knew that ultimately more power must be given to the central government if the United States were to take its rightful place among the nations of the world.

No attempt …

An Analysis Of Certain Relationships Between Intelligence Quotients, English Placement Test Scores, And Scholastic Averages Of Students Enrolled In Modern Foreign Languages, 1930-1936, University Of Tennessee, Emma Ruth Ensor Tallent Aug 1937

An Analysis Of Certain Relationships Between Intelligence Quotients, English Placement Test Scores, And Scholastic Averages Of Students Enrolled In Modern Foreign Languages, 1930-1936, University Of Tennessee, Emma Ruth Ensor Tallent

Masters Theses

(From the Definition and Scope of the Study)

At the outset of the project, originally undertaken in the fall of 1936, it was hoped to discover certain definite facts regarding the status of foreign languages at the University (the trend of enrollment toward each of the various languages or away from them, and from what other subjects of the curriculum students came to foreign languages or to what subjects they went from them; the total enrollment in the various languages over the years studied, etc., etc.). It was not at that time fully appreciated how much effort and time …

Efforts Of The Continental Congress To Promote Manufactures And Domestic Arts In The Colonies, Floyd Neal Penick Aug 1937

Efforts Of The Continental Congress To Promote Manufactures And Domestic Arts In The Colonies, Floyd Neal Penick

Masters Theses

While efforts were made to promote manufactures in the colonies long before the Revolutionary War began, this struggle forced the Continental Congress to exert more strenuous efforts for the encouragement of the production of certain necessary commodities than had formerly been made. These endeavors, however, were largely incidental to the greater work of successfully prosecuting a war. It is probably true that more emphasis would have been placed upon the domestic manufactures at this time had the Revolution not occurred. The non-importation agreements, passed because of the Intolerable Acts and similar measures, made such a result almost inevitable.

Tennessee's Policy In The Removal Of The Cherokee, Minnie Hazel Myers Aug 1937

Tennessee's Policy In The Removal Of The Cherokee, Minnie Hazel Myers

Masters Theses

PREFACE: Indian removal was one of the most vital problems in the early history of the State of Tennessee. When this state came into the Union she had title to only two widely separated triangles of land, one in northern Middle Tennessee, the other in East Tennessee. The Indians held title to all other lands within her limits, and these lands practically surrounded the white settlements. Squatters who settled upon Indian soil and holders ot North Carolina land warrants petitioned the Federal Government to purchase Indian land; public officials pleaded for the purchase of Indian land to aid in the …

The Military History Of East Tennessee, 1861-1865, Frank P. Smith Aug 1936

The Military History Of East Tennessee, 1861-1865, Frank P. Smith

Masters Theses

Campaigns of the Civil War may be place in three major divisions: the fighting in Virginia, with it attendant invasion of Maryland and Pennsylvania, between the Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of the Potomac; the campaigns of the West, covering Kentucky, Middle and West Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolinas; and the trans-Mississippi struggles.

With the exception of the Chattanooga campaign, East Tennessee was not included in these larger maneuvers and battles, probably because of its topographical features and geographical location. However, there are certain facts regarding the region during the Civil War that are of interest. …

Moliere's Influence On Congreve, Mildred Atkins Stern Aug 1933

Moliere's Influence On Congreve, Mildred Atkins Stern

Masters Theses

Conclusion:

Congreve owes a debt to Moliere - a debt which varies with the different plays but which can be traced in all four comedies. Plots, characters, and dramatic style recall Moliere. Many of the similarities between Congreve and Moliere may be accidental and allowances must be made for these. But after all allowances are made, the great indebtedness of Congreve to Moliere is evident. We may conclude with Swinburne that "a limb of Moliere would have sufficed to make a Congreve" and yet that "no English writer, on the whole, has so nearly touched the skirts of Moliere."

The Development Of The Arthurian Story In English And American Literature From 1800 To The Present Time, Lucy Willeford Mcmahan Jan 1933

The Development Of The Arthurian Story In English And American Literature From 1800 To The Present Time, Lucy Willeford Mcmahan

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this essay is to show the development of the Arthurian story in the creative literature of the English language from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the present with reference to: (1) the relation of the author's treatment of the subject to the spirit of the age, (2) the relation of the author's treatment to the treatment of the subject in his source and, (3) the relation of the author's treatment to his characteristic treatment of other subjects"--Introduction, page 3.

The Confederate Government And The Unionists Of East Tennessee, Beatrice L. Garrett Aug 1932

The Confederate Government And The Unionists Of East Tennessee, Beatrice L. Garrett

Masters Theses

Preface: The events with which this thesis deals left behind them a heritage of hatred, bitterness, and prejudice. In the years immediately following the Civil War, those persons who were by birth or by nature "Northern" in sentiment stubbornly believed that the Confederate government overstepped the bounds of civilized warfare - that it was unnecessarily and maliciously cruel to the Unionists of East Tennessee. On the other hand, those of "Southern" sentiment despised the East Tennessee Unionists as traitors to their state and friends - as persons wholly untrustworthy and treacherous.

I have not sought to either condemn or justify …

Missionary Activities Among The Cherokee Indians, 1757-1838, William Ward Crouch Aug 1932

Missionary Activities Among The Cherokee Indians, 1757-1838, William Ward Crouch

Masters Theses

Introduction: Any historical account of early Indian missions must of necessity find its background in the prevailing political and religious conditions in Europe at the time of the discovery, the exploratlon, and the colonization of the American continent. At the end of the fifteenth century the Commercial Revolution broke upon Europe, and the discovery of America came as a direct result of this revolution. Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the Catholic nations of southern and southwestern Europe were exploring and colonizing parts of both North and South America, excepting the Atlantic coast of North America from Florida to the …

The Interpretation Of Early American Treaties By The Supreme Court Of The United States, Edmund Cody Gass Aug 1931

The Interpretation Of Early American Treaties By The Supreme Court Of The United States, Edmund Cody Gass

Masters Theses

Introduction: One precept of modern international law that eventually gained universal recognition was the right of each state to act as its own interpreter of compacts to which it was a party. This fact arose from necessity, because until recently there was no international tribunal, possessing the attributes of a court of law, competent to pass upon the validity or the construction of treaties in a manner of binding finality. Hence, whenever there have arisen cases involving treaties, each state concerned has acted in the dual capacity of litigant and judge. This situation might easily be regarded as a weakness …

Some Phases Of The History Of The Woman's Movement In Tennessee, Elizabeth Stone Hoyt Aug 1931

Some Phases Of The History Of The Woman's Movement In Tennessee, Elizabeth Stone Hoyt

Masters Theses

The discussion of the woman's movement in this thesis will not refer exclusively to feminine operations for equal suffrage, but will include, also, the intellectual, the political, the humanitarian, and the economic development of women. One cannot say dogmatically that on such a day in such a month of such a year woman started to free herself from her inferior position. The woman's movement, like other great movements, has been in the process of evolution during a long period of time. In practice, woman's position has varied from age to age; but, in theory, woman has not been considered an …

A Comparison Of Rabelais's Ideas On Intellectual, Religious, And Social Freedom With Those Of Montaigne, Calvin, And Marguerite De Navarre, Archalita Reba Millsaps Jun 1931

A Comparison Of Rabelais's Ideas On Intellectual, Religious, And Social Freedom With Those Of Montaigne, Calvin, And Marguerite De Navarre, Archalita Reba Millsaps

Masters Theses

(From the Introduction)

The characteristic intellectual manifestation of the Renaissance in France was the spirit of free inquiry, of revolt against traditional authority. In other words, it was the assertion of the freedom of man and of the rights of the individual. For this reason the sixteenth century marks a great change in all the provinces of the intellectual life. Here can be seen the full advent of the Italian Renaissance with its spirit of intense liberty and originality.

The Flora Of Homer, Mary Ruth Chiles Jun 1931

The Flora Of Homer, Mary Ruth Chiles

The Social And Political Philosophy Of Shelley As Revealed In His Poetry, Eulalie Imogene Powell Jan 1930

The Social And Political Philosophy Of Shelley As Revealed In His Poetry, Eulalie Imogene Powell

Masters Theses

"The interest in a study of the philosophy of Shelley does not lie in the hope of discovering anything new, since there is little in anyone's belief that is without historic parallel. Rather, the sources of such an interest are first, the medium of poetry through which Shelley expressed his belief, and secondly, the transference of these beliefs into the acts of his life. It is to a consideration of the first of these that this paper is limited. Biographical facts will be used only for the elucidation of the theories expressed in his poems. Briefly, the purpose of this …

The Life Of William Carroll, Margaret Leonard Walker Aug 1929

The Life Of William Carroll, Margaret Leonard Walker

Masters Theses

PREFACE: Until recent years almost nothing had been written about William Carroll although he was governor of Tennessee for a greater length of time than any other man and is one of Tennessee's commanding figures. He participated in and was a leading figure in two of the most remarkable achievements in military history: the victory of Horseshoe Bend, and the victory of New Orleans.

Not all the interesting events of Carroll's life have yet been placed before the public; both his character and attainments have been neglected by the historians. It is in order to supply in a small measure …

The Concept Of Social Determinism As A Motivating Influence In Some Modern Tragedy, Arthur Lenox Bradford Jan 1929

The Concept Of Social Determinism As A Motivating Influence In Some Modern Tragedy, Arthur Lenox Bradford

Masters Theses

"The term, "social determinism", is a rather unfortunate designation for the absolute conditioning of human character by the aggregate of biologic and social influences...The central idea of this positivistic interpretation is that man, along with all other organic things, is the product of hereditary accidence and environmental contacts, that his psychic and physical constitutions (if there be such differentiation) are fashioned to the minutest detail by circumstance, and that his thoughts and the chemic impulses of his nature appear precisely according to his character which he has no hand in making"--Introduction, page 2-3.

The Origin And Development Of The Arthurian Story In English Literature To The Nineteenth Century, Nadine Matlock Sease Jan 1927

The Origin And Development Of The Arthurian Story In English Literature To The Nineteenth Century, Nadine Matlock Sease

Masters Theses

"It is the purpose of this paper to trace the story of the Arthurian romance from its origin to the nineteenth century with especial reference to the literature of the English language"--pages 1-2.

German And Swiss Colonization In Morgan County, Tennessee, Hobart Schofield Cooper Dec 1925

German And Swiss Colonization In Morgan County, Tennessee, Hobart Schofield Cooper

Masters Theses

Preface

It is frequent occurrence that certain phases of the development of history escape even the most observant writers of history. In some cases facts overlooked and unrecorded are of negligible importance. In others, these unrecorded incidents leave a flaw, as it were, in the logical trend of historical events. Likewise, incidents of seeming local interest in extent when properly interpreted and coordinated often prove of inestimable value in the light of historical account. It is with a view of presenting a new hitherto unmentioned event in the history of Tennessee that the subject of this thesis was selected.

It …

A History Of The Cherokee Indians Of The Tennessee Region From 1783 To 1794, Ralph Walter Frost Aug 1925

A History Of The Cherokee Indians Of The Tennessee Region From 1783 To 1794, Ralph Walter Frost

Masters Theses

Preface: The purpose of this thesis is to narrate the relationships that existed between the settlers and the Cherokee Indians occupying particularly what is now the State of Tennessee, with special attention to the character of both powers as brought forth by their contact with each other, and to the policies of each toward the other. The years 1783 to 1794 form an important period in the history of the United States and also the history of the Tennessee region. The Nation was in a state of confusion. The Continental Congress constituted the National power during most of these years …

The Ciris And Ovid: A Study Of The Language Of The Poem, Richmond Frederick Thomason May 1923

The Ciris And Ovid: A Study Of The Language Of The Poem, Richmond Frederick Thomason

Masters Theses

Introduction:

Some twenty-five poems, known as the Vergilian Appendix, and attributed by the ancients to the youthful Vergil, have come down to us in inferior manuscripts, but not in the great Vergilian codices. Among the best known of these poems are three short epics, the Culex, the Aetna and the Ciris. For centuries scholars have been agreed that all the poems of the Appendix are spurious, with the possible exception of one or two very short pieces which are contained in the Catalepton and which purport to give certain personal details. [Note. The present study has been prepared in cooperation …
