Appalachian Mothers Values And Disciplinary Practices, Shirley Crouse Jun 1972

Appalachian Mothers Values And Disciplinary Practices, Shirley Crouse

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to compare the values of a group of lower-class Appalachian mothers for their boys and for their girls. Punishment practices for boys and for girls were also compared. The child’s report of punishment was compared with the mother’s. It was hypothesized that there would be no difference between the boys’ mothers and the girls’ mothers in their choice of values for their children on a questionnaire using a list of values adopted from Kohn. It was also hypothesized that there would be no difference between the proportion of boys agreeing with their mothers and …

Antigone, Antigone, Jeanette Lanning Payne Davis Mar 1972

Antigone, Antigone, Jeanette Lanning Payne Davis

Masters Theses

Man is truly a marvelous creation. His special gifts include the ability to think and reason as well as the ability to imagine and create. Sophocles and Anouilh, despite the winds of time that separate their literary achievements, are two examples of imaginative, creative literary giants. This thesis is an in-depth study of two tragedies which are both based on an ancient Greek myth and which are both called Antigone.

Chapter I begins with a comparison of the action, time, key themes and patterns which are evident in the two tragedies. Many important passages which illustrate the attitudes and relationship …

The Life And Songs Of John Danyel, Sally J. Wylie Jan 1972

The Life And Songs Of John Danyel, Sally J. Wylie

Masters Theses

The lute song or "ayre" as it was usually spelled by its Elizabethan and early Jacobean composers was a type of English song whose melody was predominant and its accompaniment carefully composed. It was usually accompanied by the lute and often the viol doubled the bass line. The term "ayre" or "aire" was used by English writers of the seventeenth century in the sense of key or mode. The texture of the lute song was generally homophonic and much simpler than that of the polyphonic madrigal. Of course, lutenist-song composers like John Dowland and John Danyel often used all of …

The Machiavellian Influence Manifested In Christopher Marlowe's Tamburlaine The Great And The Jew Of Malta, Carol L. Janssen Jan 1972

The Machiavellian Influence Manifested In Christopher Marlowe's Tamburlaine The Great And The Jew Of Malta, Carol L. Janssen

Masters Theses

The concepts developed by Niccolo Machiavelli and presented in The Prince exerted a profound influence on the dramatists of the Elizabethan age. However, before they were incorporated into Elizabethan dramas, these ideas were perverted and disparaged by Innocent Gentillet, Gabriel Harvey, Father Parsons, and others. The result of this perversion is that Machiavelli's original ideas are barely recognizable, at times, in the Elizabethan interpretations, of those ideas.

The key ideas of Machiavelli are these: the ruled majority of the people are passive, weak, mutable, inconsistent, simple, and ungrateful, so they can be easily subjected and controlled by the Prince; the …
