Romantic Metasubjectivity: Rethinking The Romantic Subject Through Schelling And Jung, Gord Barentsen
Romantic Metasubjectivity: Rethinking The Romantic Subject Through Schelling And Jung, Gord Barentsen
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis takes up Friedrich Schelling’s philosophy and Carl Jung’s analytical psychology to develop Romantic metasubjectivity, a model of the subject absorbing more of the vast compass of Romantic thinking on subjectivity than what prevails in Romantic criticism. Romantic criticism tends to be dominated by psychoanalysis as well as deconstruction and poststructuralist theory, which see the subject as either a linguistic phenomenon or simply a locus of difference without a unified “I.” In response to this critical tradition, Romantic metasubjectivity discerns a notion of Self which is neither a linguistic fantasy nor a transcendental essence which is or becomes fully …
Imagining The Unimagined Metropolis: Privilege, Liminality, And Peripheral Communities In The Contemporary Urban Situation, Colton R. Sherman
Imagining The Unimagined Metropolis: Privilege, Liminality, And Peripheral Communities In The Contemporary Urban Situation, Colton R. Sherman
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Various works of psychogeographic literature explore privileged and non-privileged communities and spaces through narrative and character development. Novels of this sort—specifically those by China Miéville, Neil Gaiman, and J.G. Ballard—feature narratives where their respective protagonists undergo a liminal metamorphosis and transform from a monotonous, albeit privileged urbanite into a free-associating inhabitant of the urban periphery: the unimagined, non-privileged space of urban detritus. By engaging with these authors’ novels alongside the works of the Situationists, Walter Benjamin, Rob Nixon and others, the goal of this thesis is to explore how the dominant urban epistemologies are subverted—whether or not they should be …
Appearing Live: Spectatorship, Affect, And Liveness In Contemporary British Performance, Meghan O'Hara
Appearing Live: Spectatorship, Affect, And Liveness In Contemporary British Performance, Meghan O'Hara
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The liveness of theatre is a much-debated topic in playwriting, arts policy, and performance studies. Discussions of liveness, by scholars such as Peggy Phelan, Richard Schechner, and Herbert Blau, have historically suggested that performance is an ephemeral medium, defining “liveness” as a descriptor of theatre’s transient existence, a phenomenon which disappears at the same moment it is performed. More recently, scholars such as Philip Auslander, Rebecca Schneider, and Amelia Jones have reconsidered this historical debate, suggesting that performance does not simply occur once and then disappear, but that its temporality must include repetition, reperformance, and memory. However, these approaches continue …
Tracing The Interstice: Godard, Deleuze, And The Future Of Cinema, Anthony C. Coughlin
Tracing The Interstice: Godard, Deleuze, And The Future Of Cinema, Anthony C. Coughlin
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis aims to demonstrate how cinema, despite its diffusion from celluloid projection into different forms and arenas of media (primarily digital), still has the power to articulate the relationship between thought and images and produce concepts for philosophical practice. This thesis also aims to appropriate from Gilles Deleuze’s philosophy several concepts for the study of cinema itself, and for the understanding of cinema as it is produced by Jean-Luc Godard. Using two of Godard’s recent films: In Praise of Love (2001), and Goodbye to Language (2014), this paper will elaborate the relevance to contemporary filmmaking of Cinema 2 …
How Do Teachers Challenge Neoliberalism Through Critical Pedagogy Within And Outside Of The Classroom?, Rezvan Shahsavari-Googhari
How Do Teachers Challenge Neoliberalism Through Critical Pedagogy Within And Outside Of The Classroom?, Rezvan Shahsavari-Googhari
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis uses the qualitative case study approach to investigate current strategies and skills four Ontario public secondary school teachers apply both within and outside of the classroom to enhance students’ critical consciousness. The focus is on teachers’ pedagogical work in the era of neoliberal restructuring in order to provide a rich account of how neoliberalism challenges and affects their teaching. Existing literature shows a crisis of identity and political agency among youth in many Western societies, characterized by individuals’ inability to think critically about social, political and economic issues, which is rooted in neoliberal education reforms. Adopting a critical …
Fiduciary Duties And Commercial Surrogacy, Emma A. Ryman
Fiduciary Duties And Commercial Surrogacy, Emma A. Ryman
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Since the 1980’s, surrogacy has become a popular reproductive alternative for individuals experiencing infertility. The ethical and legal analyses of surrogacy have been rich and varied. Some bioethicists have charged the commercial surrogacy industry with the exploitation of global southern women or with the impermissible commodification of children and women’s reproductive capacities. Others have praised the potential for economic empowerment and bodily autonomy that surrogacy may accord to women. However, throughout these explorations of the ethics of surrogacy, comparatively little attention has been paid to the moral status of a crucial actor: the fertility doctor. Without doctors willing to provide …
Autos, Allos, And World: Life And Identity In The Situation Of Contemporary Global Modernity, Thomas M. Szwedska
Autos, Allos, And World: Life And Identity In The Situation Of Contemporary Global Modernity, Thomas M. Szwedska
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
By bringing the machinic ontology of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, together with Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela’s machinic theory of autopoiesis, this thesis presents a rethinking of world and identity in what we call the situation of contemporary global modernity. It argues that worlds and identity co-arise with one another through a poietic structuring. Globally, this is defined by organizational processes of autopoietic capitalism that attempts to self-separate from worlds. These processes involve an ontology of abstractive creation destruction, which continuously re-inscribe histories and identities in the image of capitalism. Locally, worlds and identities are structured by allopoietic processes, …
Laughing Doubles: The Duality Of Humour, Evan A. Pebesma
Laughing Doubles: The Duality Of Humour, Evan A. Pebesma
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis examines humour as a theoretical problem, taking humour as both an object to be defined and as a mode of thinking in its own right. In the first chapter, I position humour between good sense and nonsense within a Deleuzian and psychoanalytic framework, culminating in a discussion of humour’s relationship to perversion. In the second chapter, I further develop this connection to perversion through an analysis of Christian humour, exploring the incongruity between the transcendent heights and corporeal depths, with special attention paid to the comedic works of Erasmus and Rabelais. In the third chapter, I examine how …
Spaces Of Rupture: Wondering, Wandering, Remixing, Cathy Benedict
Spaces Of Rupture: Wondering, Wandering, Remixing, Cathy Benedict
Music Education Publications
This response is based on my presentation at Teachers College, Columbia University celebrating the launch of Allsup’s (2016) book, Remixing the Classroom: Toward an Open Philosophy of Music Education. I enter the text with openness, and with a willingness to ponder and consider. As such I offer the following considerations for further “thinking through.” These are considerations, given the context of the book, I feel are necessary to address: independent musician, child centered / learner centered, or constructivism writ large, learning outcomes, and finally the space in the elementary setting for the kinds of pedagogical engagements and purpose Allsup outlines …
Temporary Gentlemen: The Masculinity Of Lower-Middle-Class Temporary British Officers In The First World War, Magdalena J. Hentel
Temporary Gentlemen: The Masculinity Of Lower-Middle-Class Temporary British Officers In The First World War, Magdalena J. Hentel
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
During the First World War, the high mortality rate of officers led to an officer shortage. This, in turn, resulted in the Army promoting officers from the ranks rather than drawing on the traditional supply of upper-middle-class, public-school-educated officers, giving lower-middle-class men the opportunity to obtain temporary commissions. In an effort to standardize the process of granting commissions to rankers, the Army created Officer Cadet Battalions, which offered a four-month crash course in the art of being an officer to candidates recommended by their commanding officer in the field. Drawing on letters, memoirs (published and unpublished), oral interviews as well …
Evidence In Neuroimaging: Towards A Philosophy Of Data Analysis, Jessey Wright
Evidence In Neuroimaging: Towards A Philosophy Of Data Analysis, Jessey Wright
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Neuroimaging technology is the most widely used tool to study human cognition. While originally a promising tool for mapping the content of cognitive theories onto the structures of the brain, recently developed tools for the analysis, handling and sharing of data have changed the theoretical landscape of cognitive neuroscience. Even with these advancements philosophical analyses of evidence in neuroimaging remain skeptical of the promise of neuroimaging technology. These views often treat the analysis techniques used to make sense of data produced in a neuroimaging experiment as one, attributing the inferential limitations of analysis pipelines to the technology as a whole. …
Impact Of Islamophobia On Post-Secondary Muslim Students Attending Ontario Universities, Hassina Alizai
Impact Of Islamophobia On Post-Secondary Muslim Students Attending Ontario Universities, Hassina Alizai
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This study investigated the experiences of Muslim Canadian students attending institutions of higher education in the context of increasing Islamophobia. This study utilized qualitative case study methodology to investigate the following questions: (1) What are the experiences of Muslim Canadians attending institutions of higher education in the current context of Islamophobia? (2) How is the rising anti-Muslim sentiment impacting the academic performance of Muslim students? (3) How do Muslim students negotiate or navigate their identities subsequent to recent national and international tragic events (e.g. Paris Attacks, San Bernardino and other terrorist atrocities)? The students’ responses resulted in three major themes …
The Unknown Soldier In The 21st Century: War Commemoration In Contemporary Canadian Cultural Production, Andrew Edward Lubowitz
The Unknown Soldier In The 21st Century: War Commemoration In Contemporary Canadian Cultural Production, Andrew Edward Lubowitz
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Over the past two decades, expressions of Canadian national identity have become increasingly militarized in cultural production in the commemorative works that have been created, renovated, or re-inscribed in Canada or in important Canadian international sites such as the Vimy Memorial in France. An integral component to this militarization is the paradoxical figure of the Unknown Soldier, both a man and a symbol, known and unknown, individualized and universal. Despite its origins in Europe after the First World War, the Unknown Soldier Memorial tradition has been reinvigorated in a Canadian context in the twenty-first century because it elevates white masculine …
A Place For Locative Media: A Theoretical Framework For Assessing Locative Media Use In Urban Environments, Darryl A. Pieber
A Place For Locative Media: A Theoretical Framework For Assessing Locative Media Use In Urban Environments, Darryl A. Pieber
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
By 2050, three quarters of the world’s population will live in large urban conurbations. Within these environments, we see the rise of locative media – mobile technologies that capture and deliver location- and time-specific content and connections to their users. The key attribute of locative media that distinguishes them from other mobile media is location. Yet ideas of how locative media influence our relationship to the spaces we inhabit remain undertheorized. This gap arises because of an absence of interrogation into how and why people come to develop a connection with these spaces – how and why a space …

Dying To Be Modern: Cataraqui Cemetery, Romanticism, Consumerism, And The Extension Of Modernity In Kingston, Ontario, 1780-1900, Cayley B. Bower
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Cataraqui Cemetery in Kingston, Ontario, is one of many garden cemeteries that were constructed in the nineteenth century as a marker of modernity and civility. Over the course of the nineteenth century, the changes to interment customs, spaces, and services that occurred in cemeteries like Cataraqui were key to the creation and expression of modernity in emerging Canadian cities. Garden Cemeteries not only provided more beautiful and healthful burial spaces, they gave expression to new configurations of the human relationship with the natural world, and provided new means of communicating spirituality, and respectability. Through the application of Romanticism and the …
Audio Mastering As A Musical Competency, Matthew T. Shelvock
Audio Mastering As A Musical Competency, Matthew T. Shelvock
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In this dissertation, I demonstrate that audio mastering is a musical competency by elucidating the most significant, and clearly audible, facets of this competence. In fact, the mastering process impacts traditionally valued musical aspects of records, such as timbre and dynamics. By applying the emerging creative scholarship method used within the field of music production studies, this dissertation will aid scholars seeking to hear and understand audio mastering by elucidating its core practices as musical endeavours. And, in so doing, I hope to enable increased clarity and accuracy in future scholarly discussions on the topic of audio mastering, as well …
No Justice Without Narratives:Transition, Justice And The Khmer Rouge Trials, Tallyn Gray Dr
No Justice Without Narratives:Transition, Justice And The Khmer Rouge Trials, Tallyn Gray Dr
Transitional Justice Review
The article addresses the relationship between the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) and the supposed constituents of that transitional justice institution. The article sets out to offer a sociological methodology that TJ mechanism could contemplate in the process of enabling victims/witnesses to narrate justice and transition in their own terms and using Cambodia as a case study. It offers a theoretical and methodological approach to be reflected upon by transitional justice scholars and practitioners, which may enable a more victim-centered attitude in practical interactions with atrocity survivors ( not a cure-all policy solution ). My own research …
Women In Leadership Within Professional Sport In Canada, Amanda B. Cosentino
Women In Leadership Within Professional Sport In Canada, Amanda B. Cosentino
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Many women enter graduate and undergraduate sport management degree programs to prepare for leadership positions in sport (Brassie, 1989). However, in professional sport in North America, the proportion of women advancing to senior roles is comparatively small. Previous research (Berry & Franks, 2010; Dreher, 2003; Lough & Grappendorf, 2007; Sartore & Cunningham, 2007) and a review of the company directories all confirm that a relatively small proportion of women hold senior leadership roles at either the league or team levels. In fact many teams do not have a single woman in a senior leadership role in spite of the fact …
Islam's Low Mutterings At High Tide: Enslaved African Muslims In American Literature, Zeinab Mcheimech
Islam's Low Mutterings At High Tide: Enslaved African Muslims In American Literature, Zeinab Mcheimech
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This dissertation traces the underexplored figure of the African Muslim slave in American literature and proposes a new way to examine Islam in American cultural texts. It introduces a methodology for reading the traces of Islam called Allahgraphy: a method of interpretation that is attentive to Islamic studies and rhetorical techniques and that takes the surface as a profound source of meaning. This interpretative practice draws on postsecular theory, Islamic epistemology, and “post-critique” scholarship. Because of this confluence of diverse theories and epistemologies, Allahgraphy blurs religious and secular categories by deploying religious concepts for literary exegesis. Through an Allahgraphic …
The Foundations Of Empire Building: Spain’S Legacy And The American Imperial Identity, 1776-1921, Gregg M. French
The Foundations Of Empire Building: Spain’S Legacy And The American Imperial Identity, 1776-1921, Gregg M. French
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This dissertation explores both the admiration and dependency that influential Americans developed towards Spain and its imperial legacy as they attempted to construct the United States’ national and imperial identities throughout the long nineteenth century. The project also challenges beliefs associated with American exceptionalism, isolationism, and the Black Legend narrative. Developed in the metropole during the century prior to the United States’ emergence onto the world stage as an overseas imperial power in 1898, an informal group of elite Americans, made up of politicians, diplomats, Hispanist scholars, magazine editors, and exposition organizers, appropriated Spain’s imperial past as the foundation of …

In 1688 a legal text, Renovación, was printed in Mexico City, the capital of the Viceroyalty of New Spain, that explains a twelve year trial that focuses on determining if a 16th century sculpture miraculously renewed itself. The final decision came from the Archbishop of Mexico City. A year after the book’s publication, the sculpture was recognized as miraculous. In 1699, ten years after this event, the author of Renovación wrote another book that narrates the same sculpture's history, Exaltación, but addressed a wider audience, and from a religious and pious perspective. The Exaltación was republished a …
Settler Colonial Ways Of Seeing: Documentary Governance Of Indigenous Life In Canada And Its Disruption, Danielle Taschereau Mamers
Settler Colonial Ways Of Seeing: Documentary Governance Of Indigenous Life In Canada And Its Disruption, Danielle Taschereau Mamers
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Settler colonialism in Canada has and continues to dispossess Indigenous nations of their lands and authority. Settler Colonial Ways of Seeing argues that a politics of visibility has been central to these structures of invasion and dispossession. In an effort to transform sovereign Indigenous nations into “Indians”, the state has used techniques of bureaucratic documentation to naturalize the classification of Indigenous bodies as racially inferior and thus subject to a range of violent interventions. This politics of visibility fails to see Indigenous people as people who matter.
Using Indigenous feminist critique, discourse analysis, and aesthetics to analyze federal legislation, …
The Protection Of Indigenous Intellectual Property Rights, Melissa Seelye
The Protection Of Indigenous Intellectual Property Rights, Melissa Seelye
FIMS Presentations
Librarians and archivists have played prominent roles in initiatives aimed at preserving indigenous cultural heritage in recent decades. Such initiatives have evolved in response to the relative lack of legal protections for indigenous cultural heritage of an intangible nature, especially compared to title laws intended to regulate the use of indigenous lands, burial sites, and plants. Even non-legally binding resolutions that take a holistic approach to indigenous property have proven contentious, with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) having only been ratified in 2007, despite being drafted in 1993. Grounded in a critical understanding of …

The Effects Of Video Recording On The Level Of Expertise And Self-Regulated Learning Ability Of Adults In A Beginner Classical Guitar Class, Patrick K. Feely
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This mixed methods study investigated the effects of video recording on the self-regulated learning behaviours and achievement levels of adults in a beginner classical guitar class. The class met for twelve sixty-minute sessions. Participants (N=25) were recruited from a community arts organization, were over the age of eighteen, and had little or no previous classical guitar experience. Participants were randomly assigned to a control (n=13) or experimental (n=12) group. All participants completed pre and post measures of self-regulation, and responded weekly to four reflection questions. Experimental group participants submitted short musical excerpts each week …
The Goal Of Habituation In Aristotle: A Neo-Mechanical Account, Dioné Harley
The Goal Of Habituation In Aristotle: A Neo-Mechanical Account, Dioné Harley
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Standard interpretations of Aristotle’s ethics construe the habituation phase in his theory of moral education as markedly robust regarding the moral condition that must be achieved before the learner can attend lectures on the noble and political questions in general. These “intellectualists” argue that habituation engages the rational part of the soul so that the learner develops the capacity to identify that an action is noble, which involves taking pleasure in the nobility of the act. Practical reason will provide an understanding of why the action is noble. I argue against intellectualist readings of habituation and defend a neo-mechanical account …

Alongside a Masters of Fine Arts thesis exhibition, Greater Than Lesser Than Equal To, this dossier has five components: an introduction to the dossier, an extended artist statement, documentation of my work with an introduction, an interview with Sean Caulfield and my Curriculum Vitae. Together they present and illustrate my research around the question of art and design, and a brief exploration of how they operate (mutually and competitively) within the everyday of contemporary North America. As well, they allude to how my work developed in its present form. Through the “print-structures”, I explore the nature of design and art …

Stronger, Leaner, Francophone: Physical Culture In The Nationalism Of Adrien Gagnon, Phillip Chipman
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The idea of nationalism within the Province of Quebec has been prominent throughout its history. As a notable subject, French Canadian nationalism has been studied in great detail, in relation to sport, politics, and art. However, the relationship between Francophone pride and physical culture has yet to be examined.
The purpose of this thesis was to reveal the presence of French Canadian nationalism within the realm of bodybuilding, more specifically, to study Adrien Gagnon’s physical culture magazine Santé et Développement Physique as a vehicle for nationalist thinking. Since Gagnon was publishing between 1946 and 1956, but was born in 1924, …
Skin Portraiture: Embodied Representations In Contemporary Art, Heidi Kellett
Skin Portraiture: Embodied Representations In Contemporary Art, Heidi Kellett
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In recent years, human skin has been explored as a medium, metaphor, and milieu. Images of and objects made from skin flesh out the critical role it plays in experiences of embodiment such as reflexivity, empathy, and relationality, expanding conceptions of difference. This project problematizes the correlation between the appearance of the epidermis and a person’s identity. By depicting the subject as magnified, fragmented, anatomized patches of skin, “skin portraiture”—a sub-genre of portraiture I have coined—questions what a portrait is and what it can achieve in contemporary art. By circumnavigating and obfuscating the subject’s face, skin portraiture perforates the boundaries …

Since Confederation enshrined Canada Customs’ mandate to seize “indecent and immoral” material, the nation’s borders have served as discursive sites of sexual censorship for the LGBTTQ lives and literatures that cross the line. While the Supreme Court’s decision in Little Sisters v. Canada (2000) upheld the agency’s power to exclude obscenity, the Court found Customs discriminatory in their preemptive seizures of LGBTTQ material. Extrapolating from this case of the state’s failure to sufficiently ‘read’ queer sex at the border, this dissertation moves beyond studies of how obscenity law regulates literary content to posit that LGBTTQ authors innovate aesthetics in response …
