Writing, Researching And Reading Bilingual, Regional Children's Literature, Anna M. Nogar Phd

Do you remember reading or being read children's books? Were they about leyendas y mitos, historias or places you had been near home? ¿Was there a vaivén between languages? In this talk, Dr. Anna M. Paraguayan Guarani, one of the native languages of Paraguay, is spoken by more than 80% of the country’s population. However, despite government and societal efforts, Spanish remains the language of prestige, required for education opportunities and social mobility. In this presentation, Josefina Bittar will discuss the characteristics of Guarani-Spanish bilingualism in Paraguay, the importance of documenting linguistic practices in the country, and the role of researchers in challenging the population’s internalized prejudices about languages and their speakers.

  • Sharing of information about, and implementation of, parental leave varies significantly between units
  • The attitude of the department chair and senior faculty strongly influence the experience of faculty who use parental leave
  • Appropriately implemented, the parental leave policy contributes to faculty recruitment …

Complicated Lives: Free Blacks In Virginia, 1619-1865, Sherri L. Burr Jul 2019

Complicated Lives: Free Blacks In Virginia, 1619-1865, Sherri L. Burr

Faculty Book Display Case

Would the United States have developed differently if Virginia had not passed a law in 1670 proclaiming all subsequently arriving Africans as servants for life, or slaves? What if the state had not stripped all Free Blacks and Indians of voting rights in 1723, or outlawed interracial sex for 337 years?

Complicated Lives upends the pervasive belief that all Africans landing on the shores of Virginia beginning in late August 1619, became slaves. In reality, many of these kidnap victims received the status of indentured servants. Indeed, hundreds of thousands of free African Americans in the South and North owned …

New Mexico Composers Archive, Unm Digital Initiatives & Scholarly Communication Jan 2019

New Mexico Composers Archive, Unm Digital Initiatives & Scholarly Communication

Love in the Archives 2019

Merging the digital with the physical, the New Mexico Composers' Archive (MSS 904 BC) was featured on screen and in print during Love in the Archives. Begun in 1973 by then-Dean of Libraries Dr. John Harvey, the collection has been partially digitized. Exhibit-goers were able to interact with the digital and physical objects and draw their own conclusions about the pros and cons of each format. A few pieces were newly digitized for the exhibit and they are included here.

Curated by Amy Winter, Program Specialist, Digital Initiatives and Scholarly Communication

Black Courts, Ernesto A. Longa Mar 2018

Black Courts, Ernesto A. Longa

Faculty Book Display Case

Book Abstract:

Pushing past the conventional understanding of federal and state courts and the judicial system, this volume examines eight little-known Florida courts. Part 1 details general jurisdiction courts from 1513 to 1865 while part 2 profiles modern-era special jurisdiction courts.

Beginning with the state's colonial history, Florida's Other Courts challenges narratives that paint Spain's administration of its New World holdings as corrupt, inefficient, and tyrannical, using research into archival records scattered across Spain, Cuba, and other New World sites. Contributors to the volume also demonstrate how British authorities later molded the courts after their own justice system, introducing grand …

Exhibit Introduction, American Association Of University Women Feb 2018

Exhibit Introduction, American Association Of University Women

The 1976 Women in New Mexico Exhibit by the American Association of University Women - New Mexico

This show recognizes the significant contributions made by the women of New Mexico throughout the years.

It was apparent from the beginning of this project, by the Albuquerque Branch, American Association of University women, that there were, and are, far too many notable women to document in one exhibit. A careful selection process, based on ordered criteria, progressively narrowed the field, originally composed of more than 150 names.

Names of many New Mexico women were suggested for this unique exhibit. Those selected met these criteria: the individual woman's contribution to her era and to future lifestyles and attitudes; documentation availability; …
