Do you remember reading or being read children's books? Were they about leyendas y mitos, historias or places you had been near home? ¿Was there a vaivén between languages? In this talk, Dr. Anna M. Nogar will discuss the research involved in creating illustrated, bilingual books with a regional focus for children; how such books are written; and what is involved in their reading for young audiences. Researching Paraguayan Guarani: The Minoritized Language Of The Majority, Josefina Bittar Phd Candidate

Paraguayan Guarani, one of the native languages of Paraguay, is spoken by more than 80% of the country’s population. However, despite government and societal efforts, Spanish remains the language of prestige, required for education opportunities and social mobility. In this presentation, Josefina Bittar will discuss the characteristics of Guarani-Spanish bilingualism in Paraguay, the importance of documenting linguistic practices in the country, and the role of researchers in challenging the population’s internalized prejudices about languages and their speakers.

Working People's History of New Mexico Oral History Interviews
Born in Cervinara, Italy, Dominick DeGregorio came with his brother to the US in 1954. Immediately, he started working in his Uncle’s grocery store in New York City. At 18, DeGregorio started his Union career by joining the Mason Tenders Local #37 in Brooklyn. After transferring his book to Local 6A Concrete Workers Union, he became a power buggy operator transporting concrete to build numerous skyscrapers in the New York City skyline. In 1974, DeGregorio moved to Albuquerque and joined LIUNA Local #16 with his first job working as General Foreman at University Heights Hospital. Assuming the position of Training …

Evaluation Of Unm's Parental Leave Policy, Julia Fulghum, Karlyn A. Edwards, Charlie Christian, Steven Verney, Lisa A. Marchiondo, Teagan Mullins
ADVANCE Reports
Experiences with UNM’s parental leave policy C215 have been evaluated using the ADVANCE 2018 Main Campus Faculty Climate Survey, a series of junior faculty interviews, and concerns brought to the ADVANCE leadership. Key findings are:
- Women and STEM faculty are more hesitant to use family-leave policies, and perceive greater disadvantage in using them than men and non-STEM faculty
- Sharing of information about, and implementation of, parental leave varies significantly between units
- The attitude of the department chair and senior faculty strongly influence the experience of faculty who use parental leave
- Appropriately implemented, the parental leave policy contributes to faculty recruitment …
