Breathing Exercises For Every Musician: A Compilation Of Breathing Exercises For Beginner Wind Players, Taylor Johnston
Undergraduate Research Conference
Methodology: As a 6th grade band student, I always had difficulty taking in enough air to play my flute. I was always told to take in a deep breath, but never taught how to do so. Breathing can be overlooked in the beginner band classroom, so I decided to do some research and make a compilation of different exercises that all musicians can do.
Abstract-Glaze Testing: Methods And Results, Hannah Perry
Abstract-Glaze Testing: Methods And Results, Hannah Perry
Undergraduate Research Conference
Floating blue is a glaze that appears to have a blue layer floating over an earthy undertone, giving it the illusion of depth. The base of the glaze floating blue was taken aside while its original colorants (rutile, red iron oxide, and cobalt carbonate) were added in different increments with other ones to get different hues. The main goal was to produce a green version of floating blue, that is, a glaze that has the same textural and visual effect as floating blue that instead has a green hue. This was tested by replacing cobalt carbonate with copper carbonate, while …

As we enter 2017, animals only face more challenges from climate change and shrinking habitat. The endangerment of these species often puts their entire ecosystem at risk. I wanted to highlight this issue by creating a series of prints focusing on a few species threatened by the habitat loss and climate change that comes with our modern way of life.

An In-Depth Look At The Original Production Of Ordo Virtutum By Hildegard Of Bingen, Marie Phillips
Undergraduate Research Conference
Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) was a German abbess in medieval times. She has been a saint of the Catholic church only since 2012, but she was a genius of her time. A woman of many talents, she was a composer, a theologian, an early scientist, writer, and so on. In her lifetime, she only wrote one play, Ordo Virtutum (or The Order of the Virtues), which was performed in 1152. This project sought to seek as much information as possible on why she created this play and its place in the history of theatre.

The Impact Of Edgard Varèse’S "Ionisation” On The Percussion Ensemble, Roger Ramirez
Undergraduate Research Conference
When I was selected to participate in a performance of Ionisation with the SFA Percussion Ensemble, the conductor, Dr. Meyer, explained the compositional process Edgard Varèse went through in order to write the piece. Hearing this inspired me to dig deeper into the composition to discover how much Ionisation impacted the world of percussion. After finding out it was the first true percussion ensemble piece ever written, I was inspired to see how it shaped the world of percussion after its debut.

Reactions To Sexism And Sexual Objectification, Olivia Rivera
Reactions To Sexism And Sexual Objectification, Olivia Rivera
Undergraduate Research Conference
Men and women have different attitudes about sexism (Phys.org Staff, 2015). Men are more likely than women to be indifferent about sexist situations.
However, most studies have not examined attitudes that college students have about sexist situations, jokes, and advertisements.
Therefore the aim of the current study is to examine gender differences and perceptions of sexism/sexual objectification in college students.

Mastering Macbeth, Shelby Gilliam, Dominique Rider, Rick Jones
Undergraduate Research Conference
The Tragedy of Macbeth is widely acknowledged as one of the theatre’s greatest tragedies. The play opens to the end of a massive battle in which Macbeth has just defeated the former Thane who sought to overthrow the king. Macbeth is given a prophecy by three witches, who promise that he will be king. To ensure the infallibility of the prophecy, Lady Macbeth plots the King’s murder and Macbeth does the deed. The Macbeths are crowned and are henceforth miserable, haunted by their guilt. The play is about a number of things such as political ambition, murder, love, and fate.

An Artists Enemy: Explorations Into The End Of Artmaking, Dhalia Galdamez
Undergraduate Research Conference
Art has never been a simple thing to do for many people. This paper will touch on the difficulties that people face when making art, and the many reasons that make people stop. Fear of being judged is a very normal human feeling, but it has constantly stopped people from realizing their potential. There was a time when, as children or adolescents we would make things and show them off proudly. We lost that innocence as we began to grown up and this is a very crucial part of why as adults, we let our fear get in the way …

THEY CALLED HIM THE “RED ROBBER OF THE RIO GRANDE.... ” Whether this moniker developed from the reddish tinge of his beard, or from the red blood that he shed on either side of the border depends on who is telling the story. The image of this man that is left to posterity is muddied; obscured by the rhyme and the romance of the corrido, and subject to the whims of political lionization or character assassination. Why Juan Nepomuceno Cortina rode into Brownsville on that early autumn day in 1859 at the head of an armed band of men has …

The Rhineland Bastards, Natalia Mujadzic, Louise Stoehr
Undergraduate Research Conference
"Rhineland Bastard" was a derogatory term commonly used when referring to Afro-German children. Initially the term denoted only those whose father had been an Allied soldier of African descent, more specifically children of soldiers in the French colonial troops who occupied the important industrial Rhineland. The term gained popularity during the years of the Weimar Republic 1919-1933 and eventually began being used exclusively to refer to all AfroGerman children regardless of their father's occupation or heritage. The Rhineland Bastards were victims of persecution, sterilization, and brutality.
