The unique blending of raw, figurative abstractions and a timeless illustrative style stand at the core of our work. This was a conscious effort to seek out the newest and boldest works in the field, created by Texas artists. Inspiration is derived from everyday life experiences. We are relying on the improvisational emergence of creating. The work as a whole reflects a pursuit of presenting expressive ideas and capturing emotion in a two dimensional format. From each canvas, panel and brush stroke, release emotions, ideas, and uniue perceptions just for you, the viewer.

An Allegorical Reading Of Cormac Mccarthy's Outer Dark, Renee Williams Apr 2013

An Allegorical Reading Of Cormac Mccarthy's Outer Dark, Renee Williams

Undergraduate Research Conference

Though Cormac McCarthy deals with aspects of religion in each of his works, Outer Dark stands apart as a complete theodicy presented through complex allegory. Through his casting of the novel's characters as analogues for Christ, humanity, and Satan, McCarthy comments on the nature and consequences of the cosmic struggle between the forces of good and evil. McCarthy constructs his theodicy with the incorporation of Nietzschean philosophy and a deistic perspective.

The Introduction Of The Black Conductor, Akeila Thomas Apr 2013

The Introduction Of The Black Conductor, Akeila Thomas

Undergraduate Research Conference

The conductor has become a position of great influence and necessity to the performing ensemble due to innovations in performance between the Baroque and mid to late Romantic periods. With such prominence given to the title, one such conductor has gained very little mention throughout the course of music's history. African-American musicians have played such a catalytic role in the shape and progression of Western music.

An Explanation Of Mannerisms, Emilie Gaultier Apr 2013

An Explanation Of Mannerisms, Emilie Gaultier

Undergraduate Research Conference

I have found through sociological research and observation that body language defines how people perceive us. The importance of the first handshake, the manner we bring our hands together while talking, or the way students use their fist to rest on their chin while in class -- all these mannerisms explain to the potential employer, the vivid listener, or the professor how we feel without consciously knowing it. The purpose of my work is to expand awareness to professionals towards implications of their presented body language.

The Electric Housewife: Post-War Supermoms And The Modernization Of The American Home, Mary Welch

Undergraduate Research Conference

THe ideal American housewife is based off of post World War II media driven model. Society judged a 1950s family on the involvement of the wife within the home. By social standards housewives were expected to work full-time in the home. Electric appliances were introduced as saving devises and became socially accepted as necessities of the modern home. Contrary to popular belief electric home appliances did not reduce the amount of work required by a housewife but rather increased the number of obligations which she became responsible for.

Every year the School of Art teams with the English Department to produce a body of work titled Pen and Pigment. I was able to participate in this project through my Typography class with Peter Andrew. Our assignment consisted of two parts. First, we were instructed to produce a poster with a typographic design to exchange with the Creative Writing: Poetry class in the English Department. Second, upon exchange of works, we were given a poem to interpret while using typography as a strong element in our design. The poetry class, in turn, wrote poems based upon our art.

Cold War Cultural Language Transference Into Modern Media: Fallout 3, Kyle Sitka Apr 2012

Cold War Cultural Language Transference Into Modern Media: Fallout 3, Kyle Sitka

Undergraduate Research Conference

Video games are fun. The fictional environments and plots they generate are designed with solely this purpose: to entertain. Some try to accomplish this goal by creating environments that are novel to most gamers, but most get by with reusing plots, settings, and language from older games, movies, books or historical periods. One such game, Bethesda's Fallout 3, draws on the imagery, language, and structure of Cold War America to create a chilling, post apocalyptic Washington D.C., complete with anit-communist propaganda posters and giant, irradiated cockroaches. While entertaining in its own right, a basic knowledge of the Cold War …

The Red Scare describes the time in American History following World War II when tension between Americans and other Communist countries, specifically the Soviet Union, were threateningly high. Each county was equipped for, yet fearful of an atomic war. The United States government tried to use this fear to motivate the American public to become mobilized. American citizens were encouraged to rely on themselves and prepare for the worst. Even though they were ignorant to the effects of such an attack, Americans tried desperately to prepare their homes and families. The government published articles, pamphlets, short films, and held drills …

Women Leadership And Political Power In Lating America: A Focus On Argentina, Jazi Hiriart

As is the trend in the rest of the world, women have historically been seriously under represented in leadership and political positions in Latin America. This situation hinders not only representation but democracy, political equality, and justice. An investigation of the specific historical, social, and political problems women face in order to gain political power aids in fully understanding this issue.

Argentina yields a series of lessons that are worth highlighting, as they have helped to buck this trend.

Choreographic Design And Process Of Dance, Kathleen Higgins Apr 2011

Choreographic Design And Process Of Dance, Kathleen Higgins

When I began the choreographic process, I was inspired by all of the emotions one might feel at a dance audition. What Is This Life?: Responses To Contingency In Chaucer's Pagan Romances, Luke Landtroop Apr 2011

What Is This Life?: Responses To Contingency In Chaucer's Pagan Romances, Luke Landtroop

Undergraduate Research Conference

In Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, the pilgrims’ host Harry Bailey invites the Monk to “quyte” or “repay” the Knight’s tale. Intrigued by various thematic and verbal connections between The Knight’s Taleand The Franklin’s Tale, and informed by critical opinions which identify the former as the “other” against which the remainder of the Canterbury Talesis arrayed, I set out to examine the ways in which The Franklin’s Tale “quytes” or responds to the issues raised in The Knight’s Tale. Not only are both tales chivalric romances set in the pagan past, but both also address the question …
