News Media Narratives Of Interethnic Isolation And Confrontation In Post-Andrew Dade County, Florida, Douglas J. Swanson Ed.D Apr
Douglas J. Swanson, Ed.D APR
Hurricane Andrew was the costliest natural disaster to strike the United States, and the strongest hurricane since the 1920s. Andrew permanently changed the landscape by wiping out entire communities and scattering the people who lived in them. At least 20 deaths were directly attributed to the storm. Property damage was calculated into the tens of billions of dollars. We can lessen the impact of such a future event upon people by gaining a greater understanding of the communication patterns that develop among survivors after a hurricane or other natural disaster has passed--particularly, survivors of differing ethnic and cultural backgrounds. By …
A Khaldunian Perspective On The Dynamics Of Asiatic Societies, Syed Farid Alatas
A Khaldunian Perspective On The Dynamics Of Asiatic Societies, Syed Farid Alatas
farid alatas
During the last twenty years or so, scholars in the Third World began to become critical of what came to be known as the captive mind. The captive mind is uncritical and imitative in its approach to ideas and concepts from the West.' Discussions on the problem of mental captivity coincided with efforts to indigenous the social sciences in the post-war period when most of the Third World gained formal independence.
The Paradox Of Ideology, Justin Schwartz
The Paradox Of Ideology, Justin Schwartz
Justin Schwartz
A standard problem with the objectivity of social scientific theory in particular is that it is either self-referential, in which case it seems to undermine itself as ideology, or self-excepting, which seem pragmatically self-refuting. Using the example of Marx and his theory of ideology, I show how self-referential theories that include themselves in their scope of explanation can be objective. Ideology may be roughly defined as belief distorted by class interest. I show how Marx thought that natural science was informed by class interest but not therefore necessarily ideology. Capitalists have an interest in understanding the natural world (to a …
Functional Explanation And Metaphysical Individualism, Justin Schwartz
Functional Explanation And Metaphysical Individualism, Justin Schwartz
Justin Schwartz
A number of (present or former) analytical Marxists, such as Jon Elster, have argued that functional explanation has almost no place in the social sciences. (Although the discussion is framed in terms of a debate among analytical Marxists, the point is quite general, and Marxism is used for illustrative purposes.) Functional explanation accounts for what is to be explained by reference to its function; thus, sighted organism have eyes because eyes enable them to see. Elster and other critics of functional explanation argue that this pattern of explanation is inconsistent with "methodological individualism," the idea, as they understand it, that …

Autour Du Contrat Naturel, Serge Gutwirth
Autour Du Contrat Naturel, Serge Gutwirth
Serge Gutwirth
De Toepassing Van Het Finaliteitsbeginsel Van De Privacywet Van 8 December 1992 Tot Bescherming Van De Persoonlijke Levenssfeer Ten Opzichte Van De Verwerking Van Persoonsgegevens’ [The Application Of The Purpose Specification Principle In The Belgian Data Protection Act Of 8 December 1992], Serge Gutwirth
Serge Gutwirth

Sociocultural Origins Of The Oromo National Movement In Ethiopia, Asafa Jalata
Sociocultural Origins Of The Oromo National Movement In Ethiopia, Asafa Jalata
Asafa Jalata
This paper examines social and cultural factors that have necessitated the emergence of the Oromo national movement. Since their incorporation into Ethiopia, the Oromo have lost their autonomous cultural and social development. With the help of the European colonial power, the Ethiopians effectively occupied Oromia, expropriated Oromian economic resources, established settler colonialism, and repressed Oromo culture and negated Oromo history. The colonial settlers created oppressive institutions that facilitated the extraction of Oromo produce and labor. The Oromo have become second class citizens and lost political freedom and institutional power. Recently Oromo cultural resistance has been transformed into the Oromo national …
