Bowl Mania And Naming Rights, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Amidst the incessant whining and babbling about who is number one, comes the endless parade of bowl games, in which millions of dollars are spent on advertising, game production, and team payouts. This is matched in the realm of conspicuous waste by the binge of spending indulged in by participating institutions of higher learning to entertain boosters, legislators, and assorted hangers-on who haunt the halls of athletic departments. FSU dropped three-quarters of a million dollars on one recent trip.

For those hearing the evening broadcast these are literally last second suggestions.

"Davis writer David Schneider's 'Street Zen' is an excellent addition to the still-early annals of American Buddhism: a crisp, candid and utterly engaging read. This is the story of a religious conversion, but about as unsentimental as you could imagine." ~ from the article

Sports Books For Christmas, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Every Christmas the sports book becomes one of those items that people resort to as a last minute gift. But the sports book can be a thoughtful and excellent gift for sports fans and for those who simply like good books and good writing. This week I am recommending nine books which come from a list of nominees for an award as baseball book of the year. Next week I'll recommend several non-baseball books.

The Verse Of J.R.R. Tolkien, Melanie A. Rawls

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Largely negative criticism of Tolkien as a poet, particularly his early work in Book of Lost Tales and Lays of Beleriand. Notes, however, that “much of the verse embedded in his prose does indeed fit the purpose for which he intended it.”

Law And Disorder: Two Settings In That Hideous Strength, Doris T. Myers Dec 1993

Law And Disorder: Two Settings In That Hideous Strength, Doris T. Myers

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Contrasts Bracton College, symbolic of failure to respect the natural law (or Tao), as Lewis defines it, and Belbury. The former ignores the natural law, representing alienation from nature and “licit” law, religion, and science.

C.S. Lewis And Animal Rights, John Laurent Dec 1993

C.S. Lewis And Animal Rights, John Laurent

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Contends that Lewis’s stance on animal rights owed “a great deal to his interest in evolutionary theory.” Notes that Lewis did not reject evolution as a scientific theory when he became a Christian; but he did reject the philosophical position of evolutionism.
