How Do We Know When Political Societies Change?, Peter Aschenbrenner Jan 2104

How Do We Know When Political Societies Change?, Peter Aschenbrenner

Peter J. Aschenbrenner

Predicates, features, attributes and properties of a system are liable to change. How does the change get marked down? For this purpose what facet of a system should command our attention? Any system worth the name, Our Constitutional Logic argues, is aware of its own standing in civil society. OCL considers the issues raised.

The Search For Certainty: A Pragmatist Critique Of Society’S Focus On Biological Childbearing, Jamie P. Ross Jan 2017

The Search For Certainty: A Pragmatist Critique Of Society’S Focus On Biological Childbearing, Jamie P. Ross

Jamie P Ross

The Search for Certainty: A Pragmatist Critique of Society’s Focus on Biological Childbearing Abstract I suggest that a form of biological determinism rests on what philosopher John Dewey calls a misplaced “search for certainty.” This search is a process whereby a constructed desire is normalized within a cultural context and naturalized in the body in a manner that substantiates the desire as predictable. Predictability, therefore, justifies a biological basis of desire. In this paper I focus specifically on a desire to bear or produce a biological child: a desire that becomes predictable within a medical model of emotion based ...

Will And Grace: The Essence Of The Pelagian Debate, Steve Curtis Sep 2016

Will And Grace: The Essence Of The Pelagian Debate, Steve Curtis

Steve Curtis

The early centuries of the Christian church saw a number of clarifying councils and theological treatises directed at objective doctrines such as the triunity of God and the hypostatic nature of Christ. By the late fourth century, the discussions were becoming more subjective: to what extent does man possess a free will? What is the cause of sin? What are the theological implications involved in salvation, and to what extent does the grace of God hold sway? Such questions naturally led back to the very beginning of time and to the nature of Adam and the consequence of his sin ...

Truth And (Self) Censorship In Military Memoirs, Esmeralda Kleinreesink, Joseph Soeters May 2016

Truth And (Self) Censorship In Military Memoirs, Esmeralda Kleinreesink, Joseph Soeters

Esmeralda Kleinreesink

It can be difficult for researchers from outside the military to gain access to the field. However, there is a rich source on the military that is readily available for every researcher: military memoirs. This source does provide some methodological challenges with regard to truth and (self) censorship, nevertheless. This study questions how truth and (self) censorship issues influence the content of these military autobiographies. It shows that these issues are not only a concern for researchers, but also for military writers themselves. The study provides concrete quantitative data based on military Afghanistan memoirs published between 2001 and 2010 from ...

Technical Problem Based E-Language Instruction For Vocational Students, Eleni Papantoniou, Thanasis Hadzilacos Jan 2016

Technical Problem Based E-Language Instruction For Vocational Students, Eleni Papantoniou, Thanasis Hadzilacos

Eleni Papantoniou

We discuss an intervention in mother language instruction in a Greek Vocational Lyceum combining Web 2.0 tools with electronic writing pedagogy. During a full school year (2012-13), forty six 11th grade students with typically low literacy skills participated, randomly separated in control and experimental group. The latter systematically dealt with Technical Problem Solving and completed online (Edmodo) increasingly complex writing tasks. Encouraged to reflect on and solve technical problems, they activated language skills for communicating their solutions through the synthesis of technical text-genres. Meanwhile the control group followed the conventional teaching method using the usual literary texts. Pre and ...

Multidimensional Consequentialism And Risk, Attila Tanyi, Vuko Andric Jan 2016

Multidimensional Consequentialism And Risk, Attila Tanyi, Vuko Andric

Attila Tanyi

In his new book, The Dimensions of Consequentialism, Martin Peterson proposes a version of multi-dimensional consequentialism according to which risk is one among several dimensions. We argue that Peterson’s treatment of risk is unsatisfactory. More precisely, we want to show that all problems of one-dimensional (objective or subjective) consequentialism are also problems for Peterson’s proposal, although it may fall prey to them less often. In ending our paper, we address the objection that our discussion overlooks the fact that Peterson’s proposal is not the best version of multi-dimensional consequentialism. Our reply is that the possibilities of improving ...

Multi-Dimensional Consequentialism And Degrees Of Rightness, Attila Tanyi, Vuko Andric Jan 2016

Multi-Dimensional Consequentialism And Degrees Of Rightness, Attila Tanyi, Vuko Andric

Attila Tanyi

In his recent book, The Dimensions of Consequentialism, Martin Peterson puts forward a new version of consequentialism that he dubs ‘multi-dimensional consequentialism’. The defining thesis of the new theory is that there are irreducible moral aspects that jointly determine the deontic status of an act. In defending his particular version of multi-dimensional consequentialism, Peterson advocates the thesis – he calls it DEGREE – that if two or more moral aspects clash, the act under consideration is right to some non-extreme degree. This goes against the orthodoxy according to which – Peterson calls this RESOLUTION – each act is always either entirely right or entirely ...

"The Indeterminacy Of Race: The Dilemma Of Difference In Medicine And Health Care", Jamie P. Ross Jan 2016

"The Indeterminacy Of Race: The Dilemma Of Difference In Medicine And Health Care", Jamie P. Ross

Jamie P Ross

The indeterminacy of race:The dilemma of difference in medicine and health careHow can researchers use race, as they do now, to conduct health-care studies when its very definition is in question? The belief that race is a social construct without “biological authenticity” though widely shared across disciplines in social science is not subscribed to by traditional science. Yet with an interdisciplinary approach, the two horns of the social construct/genetics dilemma of race are not mutually exclusive. We can use traditional science to provide a rigorous framework and use a social-science approach so that “invisible” factors are used to ...

A Business Trust For Partnerships? Early Conceptions Of Company-Related Assets In Legal Literature, And Antwerp Forensic And Commercial Practice (Later Sixteenth-Early Seventeenth Century), Dave De Ruysscher Jan 2016

A Business Trust For Partnerships? Early Conceptions Of Company-Related Assets In Legal Literature, And Antwerp Forensic And Commercial Practice (Later Sixteenth-Early Seventeenth Century), Dave De Ruysscher

Dave De ruysscher

The Antwerp example demonstrates that in the early modern period entity shielding for partnerships existed in some form by law, and that it was devised in doctrine and the practice of courts rather than in legislation. The affectation of assets for the business venture that did not entail limited liability nonetheless allowed for some separation of personal from partnership-related assets. This innovation, which was devised in doctrine in the early 1600s, was important in a mercantile context in which partnerships with open goals and with active partners or directors engaged in diverse business activities. Yet, according to an older rule ...

Articulation And Acoustics Of Kannada Affricates: A Case Of Geminate /ʧ/, Alexei Kochetov, N. Sreedevi Jan 2016

Articulation And Acoustics Of Kannada Affricates: A Case Of Geminate /ʧ/, Alexei Kochetov, N. Sreedevi

Alexei Kochetov

Affricates have been observed to be problematic in phonological acquisition and disordered speech across languages, due to their relatively complex spatial and temporal articulatory patterns. Remediation of difficulties in the production of affricates requires understanding of how these sounds are typically produced. This study presents the first systematic articulatory and acoustic investigation of voiceless geminate affricate /ʧ/ in Kannada (a Dravidian language), compared to the palatal glide and the voiceless dental stop. Ultrasound data from 10 normal speakers from Mysore, India revealed that /ʧ/ is produced with the tongue shape intermediate between the palatal glide and the dental stop, and ...

Ramping Down Chinese Commercial Cyber Espionage, Emilio Iasiello Dec 2015

Ramping Down Chinese Commercial Cyber Espionage, Emilio Iasiello

Emilio Iasiello

While detractors believe that commercial cyber espionage hasn’t really stopped, recent Chinese efforts show a government trying to get a handle on its large spying apparatus that could include hired and independent contractors acting autonomously in addition to its other resources. While complete cessation may never occur, significant timely reduction demonstrates Beijing’s willingness to work with the United States as a partner and not a pariah, and provides a foundation from which the two governments can move forward on other cyber security areas where incongruity persists.

Black Hollywood: The Stereotypes, Erasure, And Social Inclusivity Of Black Entertainers In Hollywood, 1930-60s, Jalen Robinson

jr9714@bard.edu

My field of study allowed me to concentrate on film history, especially during the pivotal periods between the Great depression and the Civil Rights Movement. My topic focuses on the utilization, and lack thereof, of African American musicians, singers, comedians, and actors in Hollywood films. The prominence of jazz/swing music, mixed with the popularity of the optimistic musical genre, defined the majority of possible avenues black talent could find work in the studio system. I examine the social stigmatization of black entertainers stereotyped in various roles within this genre, as well as a few non-musical movies, and the stars ...

Magna Carta Then And Now: A Symbol Of Freedom And Equal Rights For All, Eugene K B Tan, Jack Tsen-Ta Lee

Jack Tsen-Ta LEE

Magna Carta became applicable to Singapore in 1826 when a court system administering English law was established in the Straits Settlements. This remained the case through Singapore’s evolution from Crown colony to independent republic. The Great Charter only ceased to apply in 1993, when Parliament enacted the Application of English Law Act to clarify which colonial laws were still part of Singapore law. Nonetheless, Magna Carta’s legacy in Singapore continues in a number of ways. Principles such as due process of law and the supremacy of law are cornerstones of the rule of law, vital to the success ...

SUBJECT: Ramsey Muniz, Prisoner #40288-115 Mr. President: We pray you and your loved ones are doing well. The 1994 Three Strikes law used, to sentence Mr. Ramsey Muniz (Federal Prisoner #40288-115) should never have been applied to his case according to U.S. Assistant Attorney General Jo Ann Harris. (see her below 1995 Memo to all U.S. lawyers) Furthermore, this federal Three Strikes law now held unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court, in Johnson vs. United States, June 26, 2015 (see http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/14pdf/13-7120_p86b.pdf). How (Not) To Sell A Military Memoir In Britain, Esmeralda Kleinreesink, Neil Jenkings, Rachel Woodward Nov 2015

How (Not) To Sell A Military Memoir In Britain, Esmeralda Kleinreesink, Neil Jenkings, Rachel Woodward

Esmeralda Kleinreesink

In this study, we look at all (n=15) military memoirs published between 2001 and 2010 in Britain about military participation in the Afghanistan conflict, to establish the factors that determine whether or not a military memoir becomes a better-seller (adjusted sales >15,000 copies). We look at three aspects of the book - content (i.e., type of plot), cover (e.g., whether rank or the award of medals is mentioned) and author features (e.g., rank, sex, co-authorship by another established writer, foreword by a well-known person) - and analyze data on these aspects, compared to sales figures, using SPSS ...
