Our Leschi: The Making Of A Martyr, Alexander Olson Jul 2016

Our Leschi: The Making Of A Martyr, Alexander Olson

Alexander Olson

In1929, Nisqually Indians erected a tombstone over the grave of Leschi, a former tribal leader who had been executed in 1858 for the murder of a local white man. Leschi's remains were moved to the gravesite in 1917 after the federal government had condemned his previous resting place, on the Nisqually reservation, for an expansion of Fort Lewis. This was the second time that Leschi had been reburied. In 1895, his remains had been moved from his original gravesite just outside the reservation boundaries. His memorialists knew better than to inscribe "Rest in peace" on his tombstone.

An Interview With Prafulla Mohanti, Geoffrey Kain Jul 2016

An Interview With Prafulla Mohanti, Geoffrey Kain

Geoffrey Kain

Prafulla Mohanti was born and brought up in the village of Nanpur, Orissa, India. He lives most of the year in London, but returns to his village, where he owns a home, for a part of every year. Prafulla Mohanti came to England in 1960 after graduating as an architect in Bombay. He worked for a time as architect-town planner for the Greater London Council, but now devotes himself to painting and writing. He has held many exhibitions in England, the U.S., Japan, and Europe, and his paintings are held in a variety of museums and public and private collections. …

Focusing The Village: Satyajit Ray's Pather Panchali And Prafulla Mohanti's My Village, My Life, Geoffrey Kain

Geoffrey Kain

Gandhi insisted that the spirit of India lives in its villages, but the drift away from the village and toward urbanization in post- independence India continues. Questions arise regarding the ideological motivations driving artists’ treatments of the village in various notable works in the modern South Asian canon. A comparison is drawn between Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali [1955] and Orissan artist and author Prafulla Mohanti’s My Village, My Life [1973]. While at first glance the two may seem to have little to do with another, a close consideration reveals some striking similarities between them, providing some compelling insights into Ray’s …

Classifying The Patterns Of Natural Arguments, Fabrizio Macagno, Douglas Walton Jul 2016

Classifying The Patterns Of Natural Arguments, Fabrizio Macagno, Douglas Walton

Douglas Walton

The representation and classification of the structure of natural arguments has been one of the most important aspects of Aristotelian and medieval dialectical and rhetorical theories. This traditional approach is represented nowadays in models of argumentation schemes. The purpose of this article is to show how arguments are characterized by a complex combination of two levels of abstraction, namely, semantic relations and types of reasoning, and to provide an effective and comprehensive classification system for this matrix of semantic and quasilogical connections. To this purpose, we propose a dichotomous criterion of classification, transcending both levels of abstraction and representing not …

The Library Is Our Lab: The Case For Print Books In An Academic Library, Fran Gray, Peggy Ellis Jul 2016

The Library Is Our Lab: The Case For Print Books In An Academic Library, Fran Gray, Peggy Ellis

Fran Gray

Humanities researchers consider the library to be their laboratory, and its print collections their essential research equipment. In spite of anecdotal evidence that both students and faculty in the Humanities prefer print materials over e-books, academic libraries are allocating a steadily increasing proportion of their acquisitions budgets toward the purchase of e-books across all disciplines. What is the impact of this trend on the work of these researchers? At Western University in London, Ontario, we surveyed faculty members and graduate students in the Arts and Humanities faculty and those in the History department to gain a better understanding of their …

War And Peace In Vilnius, Lynn Lubamersky Jul 2016

War And Peace In Vilnius, Lynn Lubamersky

Lynn Lubamersky

In January 2015, the cast and crew of a BBC miniseries began filming an adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s epic novel, War and Peace in Vilnius, Lithuania. Since much of the filming was done in Lithuania and many scenes were filmed just a few blocks from the apartment I was renting while on a Fulbright scholarship, I felt swept up in the action. It was also impossible to escape the irony of the fact that the actors were staging a reenactment of a Russian imperialist tale on the very spot where that historical action actually took place, just at the moment …

Vigilante Violence Vs. Freedom Of Choice In Marriage: The Foray/Zajazd In The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth Of The 18th Century, Lynn Lubamersky Jul 2016

Vigilante Violence Vs. Freedom Of Choice In Marriage: The Foray/Zajazd In The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth Of The 18th Century, Lynn Lubamersky

Lynn Lubamersky

The most famous poem in the Polish language, ‘Pan Tadeusz’ by Adam Mickiewicz, tells of the foray – an institution where the nobles might carry out acts of vigilante violence. Generally speaking, noble families would make use of the court system in search of justice, but if they could not gain justice within the courts system, they might seek vengeance through violent collective action. In some cases, the reason why estates were being raided and their inhabitants attacked was that noble families claimed to be defending the family honor. They might say that a lady’s honor had been insulted if …

Two Soundpieces (Score), Gary Smart

Gary Smart

I was a student at Indiana University when I wrote Two Soundpieces (1969). The piece was originally written for a friend, tenor saxophonist, Robert Hores, who asked for a piece that used the tenor’s idiomatic “illegitimate” sounds. It was soon picked up by avant garde saxophonist Ken Dorn who performed the piece several times in various new music venues. I moved to Germany in 1970 and soon after lost much of my personal music library, including this piece, in a Cologne warehouse fire. At the time I had just a few copies of most of my works….and suddenly they were …

Why Martin Luther King’S Anti-Racism Crusade Needs To Be Renewed, Julius A. Amin Jun 2016

Why Martin Luther King’S Anti-Racism Crusade Needs To Be Renewed, Julius A. Amin

Julius A. Amin

Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was 39 years old when he was assassinated. Schools, streets and children are named in his honor in Africa. In America, he is honored with a public holiday. All over the world, King is known as someone who fought for human causes. At a time when racial violence and arrogance in the US and elsewhere is experiencing a rapid resurgence, King’s holiday is a reminder that much needs to be done to create a more inclusive global community.

What American Students Can Learn From Immersing Themselves In Africa, Julius A. Amin Jun 2016

What American Students Can Learn From Immersing Themselves In Africa, Julius A. Amin

Julius A. Amin

More than one million people travelled from around the world to study at American universities in the 2013-2014 academic year. By contrast, just under 300,000 Americans enrolled to study abroad. In this era of globalisation, it’s no surprise that so many young people are keen to study abroad. But as the Institute of International Education’s research reveals, the majority of US students are sticking close to home - not geographically, but culturally. Africa remains on the margins when it comes to American universities' curricula and initiatives like study-abroad programmes. American university students also display profoundly ill-informed views about Africa.

America’S Unfinished Democracy: The Struggle For Black Racial Equality, Julius A. Amin Jun 2016

America’S Unfinished Democracy: The Struggle For Black Racial Equality, Julius A. Amin

Julius A. Amin

It's been 40 years since the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. energized a large crowd in the University of Dayton Fieldhouse, but the struggle for civil rights continues. Racial equality remains a piece of America's unfinished democracy. Most Americans remember where they were when King was assassinated. Since the organization of the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955-56, King had become a household name in America. For more than a dozen years, he was a major leader in America's fight against racism, discrimination and injustice. America, in the 1960s, was a country on the brink. It was a tumultuous time. Race …

Clear-Eyed: African Immersion, Julius A. Amin Jun 2016

Clear-Eyed: African Immersion, Julius A. Amin

Julius A. Amin

Recent events including the World Cup in South Africa have done much to redeem Africa’s global image. Early European visitors wrote about the beauty of the landscape, vegetation, rivers, lakes and mountains, but labeled the inhabitants “natives” and “sub-human.” For too long, the continent was dismissed as an “exotic” place inhabited by “primitive” people considered misfits in the modern world, and as a result, some of the most vicious racial epitaphs have been detonated against them. UD’s immersion experience educates our students and reverses these stereotypes by charging them to discover for themselves firsthand the African people.

China's Contradictory Grand Strategy Manifestations: Examining The Rare Earths Export Restrictions And The One Belt, One Road Initiative, Lukas K. Danner Jun 2016

China's Contradictory Grand Strategy Manifestations: Examining The Rare Earths Export Restrictions And The One Belt, One Road Initiative, Lukas K. Danner

Dr. Lukas K. Danner

In the past few years, China has exhibited a rising assertiveness in international relations, including trade, although its official grand strategy remains "Peaceful Development." Examples of this contradictory trajectory are China's rare earth elements export restrictions (assertive) and the One Belt, One Road initiative (peaceful). This article seeks to establish, on the one hand, whether or not these examples are conforming to or diverging from "Peaceful Development," and therefore actually a manifestation of the alleged rising assertiveness on China's part, and on the other hand, identify the reason why China is acting ambivalently. To accomplish this, this article gives historical-cultural …
