African Film: A Dynamic Medium For A High School French Class Cultural Curriculum, Denise Elizabeth Dunn Barstow-Girel
African Film: A Dynamic Medium For A High School French Class Cultural Curriculum, Denise Elizabeth Dunn Barstow-Girel
MA TESOL Collection
Culture can be an integral part of the French foreign language class when students learn French language and Francophone culture through a content-based approach using the medium of African films. Founded on the pedagogical value of a thematic study of issues aimed at raising linguistic, cultural, and global awareness in adolescent, fourth or fifth year high school French students, I developed this cultural curriculum focused on Francophone African culture. While learning the French language, students will gain knowledge of West African cultures including historical aspects, and the role of the French language in this region.

Using a working definition of family literacy based upon current research and implementation in the field, the Indochinese Housing Family Literacy Project-a description of its structure and expected outcomes, lesson plans, and useful findings from current working programs-will be explored and described. Finally, …

Art And Symbolism In Ewe Religion: Ritual Objects Of The Yewe And Tro Mami Worship In Klikor, Ghana, Coleen Wright
African Diaspora ISPs
This project investigated the symbolism represented through art in the Yewe and Tro Mami Worship in Klikor, Ghana. The research questions were what are the symbols expressed through art of the two religions and how do these symbols serve the religions. In order to do this I conducted informal interviewing, participant and non participant observations on several different occasions. Through this I was able to learn about the various relics and the function that they play in worship. The material I collected suggests that art symbolism play a vital role in religion.

Product Of The Past: An Examination Of Ashanti And Dagari Proverbs As A Means Of Exploring The Cultural And Societal Effects Of The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade On The Dagaaba People And The Ashanti People, Melanie Kawano
African Diaspora ISPs
An examination of Asante and Dagari proverbs was conducted to see if the different role of the Dagaaba and Ashanti peoples in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade affected each respective society. Proverbs, culturally embedded statements, are derived from common experiences of the people and drawn from the whole of society. Therefore they capture and reflect each aspect of society as well. Thus proverbs are an ideal means of exploring the complex and sensitive issue of how the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade affected the people and vice versa. It was hypothesized that there would be proverbial differences in several categories: War and courage, …
Folk Songs Of Ghana: The Mosomagor Song Book, Julia Christensen
Folk Songs Of Ghana: The Mosomagor Song Book, Julia Christensen
African Diaspora ISPs
This project is focused on the traditional songs of Moscmagor, a village at the Eastern entrance to Kakum National Park. I was interested in learning to sing the songs, the meanings of the songs, as well as their histories and origins. I was also very interested in the singing techniques that are used, and how the singing of the songs is naturally effected by the fact that they have been learned within this oral culture. The fact that these songs are rarely written down gave me the idea of attempting to do so, using the Western process of notation. This …

The following report looks into four main aspects of scarification: marks of identification, medicine, protection, and decoration. Furthermore, it investigates the impacts of the slave trade on the practice of tribal marking. Adowa: Funeral Dance Of Asante As A Vehicle To Express Ethnic Identity, Katherine Moss
African Diaspora ISPs
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of Adowa as a vehicle to express ethnic identity in Asante society. First, background information regarding African music is presented, bringing to light the concept of African music as an integrated, 'total art' and highlighting the distinction between traditional and contemporary African music. Traditional music is discussed in terms of its defining features, continuity through enculturation, and imitation of natural patterns of African speech. Based on such conceptions of African music as both 'total' and traditional (as the section heading suggests), Adowa as a socio-music form is introduced and detailed …

Friday Night At The Mayaguez Mall: A Rationale With Examples On The Use Of Drama In The Notional-Functional Classroom, Stephen Newman
MA TESOL Collection
Three recent intensive courses teaching EFL in Puerto Rico and ESL in Brattleboro provided the author with practical experience using drama activities in connection with the application of notional-functional syllabuses. These experiences are described and the choice of a "functional" approach is justified. Functions are explained and an overview of drama is given. Seven practical drama activities for a variety of language levels and situations are presented. A discussion of the pedagogical aspects of practicing functions through drama follows, wherein such considerations as the role of the teacher, the development of the student, lesson planning, giving directions and aims are …

The paper presents one skit, used for fourth - sixth grades, as an example of the work we produced and as a basis for clarifying the way our teaching assumptions and objectives were reflected in our materials. Composing And Using Poetry As An Esl Teaching Tool, Roland Caissie
MA TESOL Collection
It is the purpose of this paper to demonstrate how poetry can be a valuable tool in the ESL classroom, the problems connected with relying on extant verse for work with ESL students, and the consequential preferability of producing one's own poetry. In addition, guidelines and suggestions are offered for creating original and goal-specific works, together with ways in which those works, once made, may be used most effectively in the ESL classroom. Also, sample works, by the author and others, as well as various exercises and a brief bibliography, are provided in an appendix, giving the reader a source …

Using Music To Teach English As A Second Language: A Guide To The Use Of Song Lyrics, Peter M. Carney
Using Music To Teach English As A Second Language: A Guide To The Use Of Song Lyrics, Peter M. Carney
MA TESOL Collection
This project consists of two parts: the first is a "guide", which lists seven distinct subject areas that can be taught or reinforced through the use of song lyrics. These seven areas are: Grammar/Structure; Conversation; Vocabulary; Idioms, Colloquial Expressions, and Two-word verbs; Figures of Speech ( Metaphors, Similes, Personification, Allusion ); Writing; and Aural/Oral skills. The reason I refer to this as a "guide" is because it presents samples of different types of songs within each category, and suggests ways to use them.
The second part consists of thirty songs, each one of which refers back to at least one …

MA TESOL Collection
This report describes the American Heritage New Illustrated History of the United States, which is a sixteen-volume set of chronologically ordered books. It also presents student-teacher objectives devised for its use following a one-semester course in which it was used at the secondary level. In formulating the objectives, I attempted to devise a course very much like a regular secondary or college-level American History course in which ESL students would have an opportunity to experience something more than a superficial or cursory exposure to that history. In evaluating its use, I attempted to identify what part the books and their …

Tooning Into English ( A Rationale For The Use Of Cartoons In The English Language Classroom Plus Cartoons And Lesson Plans ), Timothy James Maciel

Teachers of English are constantly seeking new and better materials to aid their students in learning the English language. Sometimes these materials are in the form of newspaper or magazine articles and advertisements to show how a grammatical pattern studied in the textbook is actually applied in the culture. Sometimes these materials are in the form of cultural artifacts such as clothing items or eating utensils. And very often these materials are in the form of pictures and photographs to give the student a visual representation of new words or grammatical patterns. Whatever the material, the teacher is constantly looking …
