Latino/A Presence In Media, Keiton A. Klein Jan 2018

Latino/A Presence In Media, Keiton A. Klein

2018 Symposium

In the United States, the Latino/a population is very poorly represented in the media by being both misrepresented and underrepresented in all forms of media including: newspapers, television news, and movies. When and where there is representation, it typically is a negative portrayal of a Latino character or story. This passive racism assigns these people a negative connotation regarding their ethnicity and as a result, it has a destructive effect on their population. Through the use of scholarly articles and documentations, research will show how these stereotypical portrayals negatively impacted Latino lives. The misrepresentation of Latina/os in mainstream media is …

False Stereotypes, Jordan Everard Jan 2018

False Stereotypes, Jordan Everard

2018 Symposium

Despite the Latinx community being misrepresented in mainstream American media, countless Latinx individuals have accomplished prestigious milestones throughout history in America. The stereotypical notions that have formed over the years towards Latina/o’s are both insulting and undermining. Common traits that these stereotypes follow often include the idea that Latinx people are poor, uneducated, violent and unsuccessful. My intent is to discuss self and societal impacts of these stereotypes and to nullify these negative stereotypes toward Latinx individuals by identifying positive traits that outstanding Latinx citizens possess, along with important positive impacts the Latinx community has made in American society. Through …

Beginning in the early 1900s and continuing today, there has been mass immigration by Mexicans and other Latin-Americans to the United States, and this has caused a great deal of strife between local Americans and these immigrants. There has been much discrimination on the part of Anglo Americans towards Latinos, claiming the loss of jobs and opportunity, and the increase in a threatening community. The identity of these immigrants has changed significantly over the course of the past century, largely due to the racism they have encountered. This research paper uses peer reviewed journals and scholarly articles to analyze how …

Deconstructing Colonization In The Classroom, Claire Israel

2018 Symposium

Many argue that the neocolonial culture that permeates the American public-school system directly leads to the disengagement of Latina/o students. In my research, I aim to unpack each element of this assertion. Though there is still a lot of work to do, many school districts and state public education authorities have introduced various innovative ethnic studies programs into their curriculums in attempts to diversify the content and reengage the Latina/o students in the public education system today. In the last 18 years, the national dropout rate of Latina/o students has dropped by almost half. By way of interviews and critical …

Family, Carolyn Darjany Jan 2017

Family, Carolyn Darjany

2017 Symposium

In 1993 I married my high school sweetheart and we began adding to our family with our first child a couple of years later. Over the last 22 years, our 4 children are amazingly different from one another and from ourselves. Yet, with all those differences, similarities abound. We share mannerisms, memories, experiences, habits, personalities, and physical traits. This short series explores family. Our ‘sameness’ makes us comfortable with one another while our diversity of personalities refreshes our senses and offers surprise – and sometimes, conflict. We are a fabric tightly woven together whether we like it or not.

This work explores the underrepresentation of culturally diverse individuals seeking and utilizing psychological services due to the lack of cultural sensitivity of therapists; cynicism by mental health professionals, and an outlook that therapy can be used as an oppressive tool by those in power (Sue & Sue, 1999). In short, there is much apprehension towards traditional therapeutic and intervention models in which most therapists have been educated on are based on and designed to meet the …

Latina/O Education And Its Effects On Overall Job Success, Megan Lee Jan 2016

Latina/O Education And Its Effects On Overall Job Success, Megan Lee

2016 Symposium

Young Hispanics today struggle with the American education system, especially those that are foreign-born. This is because Latina/o immigrants are part of an education system that is inadequate to meet their educational needs. A common problem immigrant’s face in the classroom is their inability to communicate. Also, teachers are not trained to communicate effectively with their student populations. For example, according to the National Education Association only 2.5% of teachers who instruct bilingual students have a degree in ESL-bilingual education. This can be a factor for which Latina/o immigrants score lower on standardized tests and the shortcomings associated with an …
