The Fall Of The House Of Usher, And The Rise Of The Civil War, Richard E. Campbell Ii Oct 2022

The Fall Of The House Of Usher, And The Rise Of The Civil War, Richard E. Campbell Ii

2022 Symposium

Poe may have died before the Civil War began, but he was close to the politics of his time. He was also an astute observer of people. His writings often explore deep aspects of the human condition. Using his in depth understanding of people and his close proximity and personal interest it would make sense that he could see how the wheels were turning. In the end it is possible that Poe would predict and hide clues of his observations within this writings, specifically The Fall of the House of Usher.

Using Geologic Principles And Data To Create A Symphony For Wind Ensemble, Thomas J. Davis May 2022

Using Geologic Principles And Data To Create A Symphony For Wind Ensemble, Thomas J. Davis

2022 Symposium

Geology and geologic processes have featured in many pieces of classical music such as Alan Hovhaness’ symphonic works after Mt. St. Helens and Glacier Peak but these pieces are impressionistic and only take general inspiration from the geology of their subjects. This paper describes the creation of Tectonics (2021) a piece which incorporates and describes many geologic principles and processes, such as mantle convection, through the musical form of cannon, the formation of fold and thrust belts whose cross sections are directly visually recreated in the score, and the physical dynamics of earthquake waves demonstrated through variations of pitch and …

“Between The Bitter And The Sweet”: Longing And Intimacy In Sappho’S And June Jordan’S Love Poems, Kp Kaszubowski

2022 Symposium

“Between the bitter and the sweet”: longing and intimacy in Sappho’s and June Jordan’s love poems.

June Jordan (1936 - 2002), Jamaican-American poet, activist and educator is most known for her political poetry while the breadth of her work spans many themes. At the core of her work, she writes with a lyrical genius that shows her readers how important it is to see the core human emotions of longing and intimacy through the personal “I.” This essay draws the lines between the breadth of contemporary poet Jordan’s love poetry and the fragments of the originator of the love lyric: …

Xunzi's Humanistic Naturalism: Utilizing Rituals To Address Our Psychological Challenges, Kaleb Mccalden Apr 2022

Xunzi's Humanistic Naturalism: Utilizing Rituals To Address Our Psychological Challenges, Kaleb Mccalden

2022 Symposium

Xunzi [298-238 BCE] is one of the major Confucian philosophers from the Warring States period of ancient Chinese history and is widely recognized as the poster child for the “naturalistic” branch of Confucian philosophy. Xunzi is often contrasted with another Confucian thinker, Mencius. Whereas Mencius is characterized by his belief that human nature is inherently good, Xunzi is primarily identified with his belief that human nature is bad. Xunzi is also known for his theory of ritual, one of his greatest contributions to Chinese thought. In his discussion of ritual, Xunzi adopts the lens of an intriguingly psychological perspective to …

Actualization Through Constraint: An Analysis Of Hegelian Self- Consciousness In Fascism- Exclusionary Expression And In Modular Orchestral Composition, Marisa Kaye Janke Jan 2022

Actualization Through Constraint: An Analysis Of Hegelian Self- Consciousness In Fascism- Exclusionary Expression And In Modular Orchestral Composition, Marisa Kaye Janke

2022 Symposium

How does a conscious entity become aware of itself and its place in the world? According to German Idealist Philosopher G.F.W. Hegel, there are required conditions that facilitate this movement of awareness. Recognition serves as a central requirement, for a consciousness cannot progress in an isolated space. Coexistence allows for referential points, and is often necessary for the actualization of concepts by providing social interactions wherein recognition both of and by others can occur.

This paper illustrates the progression of two such concepts, discourse and musical composition as forms of freedom “in-itself”. They are both imperfect for the promotion of …

Kalos, Emma Marie Bowden Jan 2022

Kalos, Emma Marie Bowden

2022 Symposium

My work, “Kalos”, is a unique composition made up of 3”x3” canvases with overall dimensions of 24”x30”. This series of acrylic paintings explores the boundaries within the photorealism technique in painting. For this painting, one 3”x3” canvas represents one corresponding square from the photorealism grid on the reference photo. The independent squares open new possibilities for viewer engagement and manipulation. The interactive piece encourages viewers to ponder the idea of beauty and how it can be manipulated.

Remote Analysis Capabilities Of Digitally Rendered Models Of Human Remains: Obtaining Osteometric Data & Assessing Pathology And Taphonomic Alteration - Using Non-Human Animal Remains As An Analogue, M. Elizabeth Dyess

2022 Symposium

Computed tomography (CT), photogrammetry, and laser surface scanning technologies have enabled remote, noninvasive, and non-destructive analysis of skeletal human remains in various contexts. Such technologies have found applications in the disciplines of osteoarchaeology, forensic anthropology, the medical sciences, and other related fields of inquiry. This presentation will discuss the accuracy and reliability of osteometric data obtained from digitally rendered models, as well as the clarity and level of detail attained. Such qualifying standards are essential if practitioners are to reliably assess pathology and taphonomic alteration to the specimens from which the scans are modeled. The suitability of each of the …

The War On Drugs And Its Legal Effects On Black Americans, Alexia L. Howard-Mullins Jan 2022

The War On Drugs And Its Legal Effects On Black Americans, Alexia L. Howard-Mullins

2022 Symposium

The differences in treatment between Black and white Americans in the past fifty years has been a topic of thought in the minds of political and sociological scholars since the inception of the War on Drugs in 1971. These differences in treatment may lead to discrimination legally, resulting in longer prison sentences and a higher proportion of Black Americans in prison. This study analyzes the results of the War on Drugs that led to disproportionate imprisonment of Black Americans, including mandatory sentencing laws, drug classifications, and discrimination within law enforcement and the legal system. This study will use primary sources …

Transforming Yourself Through English, Travis Bonwell, Joscelyn Bradbury, Christina Hudson, Jenna Sotin Jan 2022

Transforming Yourself Through English, Travis Bonwell, Joscelyn Bradbury, Christina Hudson, Jenna Sotin

2022 Symposium

The purpose of this project is redesigning Patterson Hall’s English and Philosophy billboard to inspire students to join the department. English and Philosophy are important, interdisciplinary skills that can transcend into various careers. By creating a thought-provoking billboard, we hope to inspire current and future undergraduates to choose an English or Philosophy Major.

One of the biggest obstacles these programs face is overcoming the preconceived notions surrounding them. By informing students of the countless interdisciplinary skills these programs teach, as well as detailing alumni/famous figures who do not immediately induce thoughts of English or philosophy, we can pull students from …

Inclusivity Of Minorities In The U.S. Healthcare System, Sophia N. Trujillo Jun 2020

Inclusivity Of Minorities In The U.S. Healthcare System, Sophia N. Trujillo

2020 Symposium Posters

Throughout the evolution of U.S. healthcare, the inclusivity of minorities has been a discussion amongst many communities. With healthcare being unaffordable and inaccessible to many, including minorities, it can influence their responses towards it. From research and in-depth observations, it has been revealed that certain ethnicities carry a trend of disabling illnesses and infectious diseases. This paper intends to identify the patterns that occur amongst ethnic communities that increase the risk of obtaining these conditions. Social determinants govern the health and lifestyle that have led to life-threatening illnesses. It has been found that factors such as eating habits, social environments, …

The Adventures Of Crazy Space Pigeon And Catowl, Kati Silveria May 2020

The Adventures Of Crazy Space Pigeon And Catowl, Kati Silveria

2020 Symposium Creative Works

I have been fascinated by the processes of traditional hand printmaking techniques. (Relief, Lithography, Collagraph and Etching). Comics have also been a passion of mine for over ten years. I wanted to combine these two passions, comics and printmaking, into one work of art. It is a joy to create worlds and stories that people can dive into, engage with, and enjoy. My current project, The Adventures of Crazy Space Pigeon and Catowl, is aimed at creating one such world. The three stories in the book follow my two characters and their imaginary adventures. The book platform is created using …

"Shade Of The Earth", Joseph Patrick Self May 2020

"Shade Of The Earth", Joseph Patrick Self

2020 Symposium Creative Works

“Shade of the Earth” is a collection of 5 narrative poems: “On The Mountaintop”, “The Burning Boy”, “May Live or Die”, “Must Burn to Feel”, and “Shade of the Earth." The story runs together as one narrative with each poem linking into the next, split up into parts, not to divide but to bring them together. Perhaps in the hope of showing that life is separated yet whole.

This series portrays the state of mind of someone (possibly) self-entitled, the Burning Boy, as they battle against the entity of Night who exists as the complexities of pain and sadness and …

An Analysis Of Early Modern Philosopher Mary Astell And A Critique Of The Western Canon, Analisea L. Araya Jan 2020

An Analysis Of Early Modern Philosopher Mary Astell And A Critique Of The Western Canon, Analisea L. Araya

2020 Symposium Oral Presentations

In my paper I address the unfoundedness of leaving out certain voices in the historical studies of philosophy. In order to make this point I investigate a brilliant thinker of the 17th and 18th centuries, Mary Astell. I also address, analyze and critique the Western Canon for leaving out the philosophies of women, and highlight social constructivism and social representation theory in education and the philosophies behind these concepts. Despite the misleading drift of the Western canon, there were brilliant female thinkers throughout the history of philosophy. Telling only a single story of something that has so much depth, history, …

Grayscale Portfolio, Brandon D. Chambers Jan 2020

Grayscale Portfolio, Brandon D. Chambers

2020 Symposium Creative Works

This collection is intended to evoke the sensory details that are intensified by grayscale photography. Although photography is a visual arts medium, it possesses the potential to engage the viewers’ auditory, tactical, and olfactory senses. The color symbolism theory argues that through natural association and psychological symbolism, colors have specific connotations and therefore, elicit certain emotions. If this is, in fact, the case, what then can be gained from an image that is void of color? I feel that color often distracts the viewer from the intimate details of the images and prevents them from fully immersing themselves in the …

Francesca, Madison B. Jones Jan 2020

Francesca, Madison B. Jones

2020 Symposium Creative Works

Created using instant film, this piece was taken apart and destroyed before a new image was formed. Looking at the image from the back and scraping and sanding at the layers of chemicals was an attempt at finding some remnant of the original image. It is delving into the idea of the importance of content within an image and explores the resurrection of an image in a new way.

Defining Success In Service-Learning, Vikram N. Gill May 2019

Defining Success In Service-Learning, Vikram N. Gill

2019 Symposium

Service-learning allows students to interact with and support their local community while advancing necessary skills in their given field, in this case, Technical Communication. The potential benefits of service-learning include work experience for students, a dynamic and untraditional teaching experience for instructors, and the community partners gain as much, if not more, then they would from traditional, non-learning community service. However, these benefits are often incremental. For example, the community partners may only gain the additional human resources of working with students and possible exposure for their brand. Any larger or long-term goals may not be met in the short …

Service-Learning: Effectively Transitioning Students Into The Workplace, Rachel B. Bean May 2019

Service-Learning: Effectively Transitioning Students Into The Workplace, Rachel B. Bean

2019 Symposium

Service-learning is a method of learning that is meant to integrate the needs of the community with the academic curriculum of the students. This method allows for the work of the students, emerging professionals, to be used outside of the school, serving as a test of the skills that students may have only used in a school setting. Students are assigned the task of completing a project for a community organization who is without the resources to complete the project. Matching students who need experience with community organizations who are in need of professional services is an effective method of …

David And Goliath: The Abdication Of A Throne, Shawn Marie Dufrene

2019 Symposium

The year 1936 would come to be known as the Year of the Three Kings. King George V died as the night was falling to a close on January 20. His oldest son, known as David in the family, became Edward VIII, and would abdicate before the year was out. During those 326 days, it would become apparent to those around him that he was not fit for the throne. His desire to marry Wallis Simpson would be the final straw. His younger brother, Albert, or “Bertie,” became George VI, and Edward became known as the Duke of Winsor. Through …

The Phenomenology Of It All, Justin M. Campbell Jan 2019

The Phenomenology Of It All, Justin M. Campbell

2019 Symposium

Who is consumed when we read? Does the reader consume the text or does it consume us? This essay explores the complex and possibly parasitic relationship between reader and text. This unique exchange of knowledge and ideas between reader and texts during this relationship is the phenomenology of reading. During this, the text is transformed via the consciousness of the reader from a passive, inanimate object to an active living breathing immortal entity that transcends both space and time. In doing so, the unhuman text becomes an active consumer of the human reader in the same way the reader believes …

Jews: The Makers Of Early Modern Berlin, Conlan Vance Feb 2018

Jews: The Makers Of Early Modern Berlin, Conlan Vance

2018 Symposium

This paper will discuss how Jews fit into the economic policies of Brandenburg-Prussia in the later 16th century. From Frederick William’s decree in 1671 to allow fifty Jewish families to settle in Brandenburg-Prussia to these families and their descendants becoming immersed in the economy of Berlin through their use in courts but more so through their trading, specifically, the ways in which they traded and how they used these to free themselves from some of the constraints of German Christian society. Thusly, this will be shown by looking at Jews in Brandenburg-Prussia in the later 17th century, Jews in …

The Education Gap Among Latina/O Students, Zachary Ray Berkshire Jan 2018

The Education Gap Among Latina/O Students, Zachary Ray Berkshire

2018 Symposium

The focus of this research paper is on the education gap of Latino/a students, between the ages of 18 and 24 compare to White students. According to the U.S Department of Education, about 82% of Latino/as graduated with a diploma or received a GED from high school, compared to the 92% of the White demographic. While the high school graduation rates among Latinos has improved significantly over the last fifteen years, there still need to be further efforts to close the achievement gap. Preliminary research suggests that poverty rates among Latino/a families affects the quality education they receive and whether …

Parental Deportation Effects On Citizen Children, Esmeralda S. Montano Jan 2018

Parental Deportation Effects On Citizen Children, Esmeralda S. Montano

2018 Symposium

In this paper I will be discussing how Hispanic children are affected by their parents documented status, deportation, and how it can affect them physically and mentally. Studies have shown that children who live in a household where at least one of their parents is undocumented don’t do well in school and are even less likely to graduate from high school (Luis H. Zayas, Lauren E. Gulbas). These children don’t feel secure because of raids that occur and laws that are passed that make it really hard for undocumented people to have a stable life which also affects them economically …

Academic Focus On Hispanic Students In Predominantly White Institutions, Marixza Torres

2018 Symposium

This project explores the extent in which federally funded programs, Chicano/a studies courses and Chicano/a Studies departments in predominantly white institutions have provided an inclusive learning environment for Hispanic students. The goal of this paper is to shed light on the resources universities provide for Hispanic students. Studies have shown that Latinos students attending predominantly white institutions experience more hardships because of the resources that are less inclusive of their experiences. This work uses peer review and scholarly sources as the method of analysis to assess the effectiveness of retention practices by colleges and universities with Hispanic students.

Dual-Language Immersion, Joseph C. Miller Jan 2018

Dual-Language Immersion, Joseph C. Miller

2018 Symposium

While latinos make up 18% of the American population, many analysts are noticing a problem with their education (Flores, 2017). One attempt to confront this problem is by the implementation of Dual-Language Immersion programs. The attempts to successfully transition first generation Spanish-speaking children into a predominantly English-speaking society like America have produced negative effects on their cognitive development. This establishes the premise for educational hardship throughout their scholastic development. Research has shown that Dual-Language Immersion has become an answer for this issue addressing the gaps and pitfalls that first generation Spanish-speaking children experience in a basic educational platform (Valdes, 1997). …

This study will be reviewing the reasons why Chicano/a students have a high entry rate in post high school education and why graduation rates are so low. The following factors will be considered gender, culture, financial support, emotional support, network building and self image of Chicano/a students. From 1996 to 2012 colleges have had the number of Hispanic students increase on average 240% (Fry, 2008). This paper will discuss research done by researchers who are experts in their fields and have been peer reviewed for validity. The parameters used by researchers were students had to finished high school and attended …
