The Role Of Betrayal In Selected Drama Of Tennessee Williams, Craig E. Sanderson
The Role Of Betrayal In Selected Drama Of Tennessee Williams, Craig E. Sanderson
Masters Theses
Much of the critical analysis of Tennessee Williams' drama concerns itself with the inherent conflict between ideals and reality in the universe as perceived by Williams. Such analysis, however, has not considered this conflict as a source of betrayal, or betrayal as a dominant theme in Williams' drama. In at least four of his plays it becomes evident how each of the individual characters in Williams' drama endures the conflict of reality and ideals, and the extent to which their respective approaches to the resolution of this struggle result in betrayal. Four plays--all regarded as among his most successful and …
The Bijou Theatre: 1909-1949, Robert A. Ellis
The Bijou Theatre: 1909-1949, Robert A. Ellis
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate the history of the Bijou Theatre in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee, and to ascertain the importance it had on the community during the first four decades of its existence. The wealth of talent which played on its stage during these forty years of legitimate drama (much of it coming from touring stock companies) make the theatre a landmark within the city of Knoxville.
This study should help further the resolve of the general populace of Knoxville to preserve the Bijou as an important monument to Knoxville's cultural heritage. The renovation of the old …

Beckett's Manipulation Of Audience Response In Waiting For Godot, Robert Carl Themer
Beckett's Manipulation Of Audience Response In Waiting For Godot, Robert Carl Themer
Masters Theses
This thesis examines one of the many paradoxes of Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot--that although on the surface Beckett reduces his characters to the barest minimum in human terms, the spectator still finds himself, mysteriously, identifying with those pathetic stage creatures and their plights.
The dual purpose of this paper is to examine the methods Beckett used to foster this sense of spectator-character likeness and to assess its impact upon the spectator. It explores the contrast between the near-caricatures, Pozzo and Lucky, and the more complexly humanized Vladimir and Estragon. It discusses Beckett's universalization of character, time, place, and …
Establishing Dramatic Space On Non-Proscenium Stages Through Lighting, David Kip Kriebs
Establishing Dramatic Space On Non-Proscenium Stages Through Lighting, David Kip Kriebs
Masters Theses
The volume of space which contains an individual actor's psychological environment is defined, for the purpose of this thesis, as the dramatic space inhabited by that actor. These spaces are considered to be the volumes within which a measurement of the internal and externals forces remains constant. Dramatic spaces vary in quality with the actions of the occupants of the spaces and with varying conditions existing in the surrounding universe.
The lighting of a volume of space on an open stage represents a major proportion of the force exerted by the external universe. Because the lighting is under the control …

Antigone, Antigone, Jeanette Lanning Payne Davis
Masters Theses
Man is truly a marvelous creation. His special gifts include the ability to think and reason as well as the ability to imagine and create. Sophocles and Anouilh, despite the winds of time that separate their literary achievements, are two examples of imaginative, creative literary giants. This thesis is an in-depth study of two tragedies which are both based on an ancient Greek myth and which are both called Antigone.
Chapter I begins with a comparison of the action, time, key themes and patterns which are evident in the two tragedies. Many important passages which illustrate the attitudes and relationship …

The Rhetoric Of Jeremy Taylor's Prose: Dispositio In The Winter Sermons, Robert Mashburn
The Rhetoric Of Jeremy Taylor's Prose: Dispositio In The Winter Sermons, Robert Mashburn
Masters Theses
This thesis is a critical analysis of Jeremy Taylor's method of arrangement in his Twenty-five Sermons Preached at Golden Grove: for the Winter Half-year. Its initial purpose is to determine how he organized his material for the best possible effect. Its ultimate aim is to open new avenues for studying the artistic prose of Taylor. The fulfillment of both these ends should contribute to the discovery of an aspect of Taylor's rhetoric that is too often given secondary consideration, or elocutio. An investigation of Taylor's prose usually revolves around the contradiction that exists between the opinions of Morris Croll, …
